  1. I haven't tried the bottle trick. I had been using ziplocs filled with ice but they were just melting as soon as they went in. Do you know what I can do to lower my ammonia? I've been doing water changes, changed my filter medium to ammo-carb and it's still so cloudy and smelly. I've also tried adding ammo-lock. I spoke to someone at the LPS and he said to wait it out and not add a bunch of chemicals. I've never had an ammonia spike like this before so I'm feeling kind of helpless right now. Any ideas?
  2. After suffering the hottest July in Calgary's recent history, I came home to a cloudy ammonia spiked 29 gallon tank and 4 dead raspboras, 2 black skirt tetras, and 1 pearl danio (very sad as he was surviving a large tumor quite well on his own) I replaced the filter medium with ammo-carb and did a massive water change but it's still pretty cloudy. I was able to transplant the remaining raspbora to my other tank and now just have 1 lonely spotted pleco to worry about. Oh well, I guess now I have a fresh slate for what to put in the tank now. (sigh)
  3. The nitrite test kit is only a couple months old. Fortunately, in this tank, I only had the 7(now 6) fish total so everyone was accounted for. I hope things get better, too. Thank you. I was worried about the oxygenation in the tank, too, so I had been removing the carbon dioxide generator in the evening. There was some redness around the gills so I think you might have something there. Do you know a way of regulating the oxygen in the tank?
  4. Hi. Yesterday, I noticed that some of my black skirt tetras were gasping for breath, swimming near the surface and seemed to have a cottony growth on their heads. By the end of the day, one was swimming off kilter and tucked by the water filter. I thought it might have been a fungal infection (although having it on several fish seemed unusual) so I treated the tank with melafix and pimafix. Today, the tetras seemed more normal and the white on their heads was gone. By the evening, two were back to swimming off centre (even being moved about in the water current) and gasping for breath. I checked the ammonia, nitrates and nitrites and all were normal. The only thing different in the tank lately is that they laid eggs last week (it seems to be 2 females that are in the roughest shape) and 1 month ago I put in a carbon dioxide generator using the pop bottle, yeast and sugar method. I have done a 25% water change and removed the carbon filter from the fluval but I don't know what more to do with them. Does anyone have any suggestions? :well:
  5. I had about forty baby mollies that were so darn cute but just too many of them so I donated them to Petland on Macleod Trail.. If you call ahead and ask if they're accepting fish donations, they're pretty good about telling you to just drop by.
  6. Hey all, I've just inherited a blue ram cichlid and want to try and give him a long and healthy life in my community tank. I have a 25 gallon tank with the following: 1 glass catfish 1 pearl danio 6 black skirt tetras 5 kuhli loaches 2 silver dollars Any tips on how to keep the new guy happy? He apparently wasn't playing well with his other blue ram buddy and started to take it out on the other kids in his old home (also community).
  7. Yeah, the tap rinse was totally my bad. I have an aquaclear 200 and I normally leave it alone. The tank has actually been on the go for about 3-4 years but this is my first bad infection that I've had to deal with so I had a bit of a panic. The nitrites are dropping, though. I checked again this evening and they are now between .25ppm and .5 ppm while nitrates are still around 5.0 ppm. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things continue to improve.
  8. Thanks, I did a 25% water change after the first 7 days of treatment. I think I might just wait it out for a few days and then keep checking on the levels to see if they get better. The fish don't seem all that stressed out for now so that's got to be a good sign.
  9. Hey, I just finished treating a sick silver dollar tetra with a mix of pimafix and melafix for an opportunistic fungal infection (his side had skin hanging off-not pretty). Anyhow, he was treated for 9 days and I removed the charcoal filter from my tank for a period of 7 days. After the first 7 days of treatment passed, I put in a new charcoal filter( the sponge was rinsed out last week). I just checked my levels (ammonia 0ppm, nitrate 5.0ppm and nitrite between 1.0 and 2.0ppm)Before the treatment all levels were pretty much at 0. Which part of all this mess might have caused the spike and when can I expect things to return to normal. Have I fubarred anything with all my mucking about? ps- the silver dollar is doing much better.

    New to AA

Hey Everyone, I'm new to AA. My sister in law pointed me in this direction as I have as 25 gallon tank with a pleco that had grown a bit too big for the confines of my tank. I posted a request for a new home for him and was pleasantly surprised to have received 2 responses in quite rapid succession. Yay. I've had a community tank for about 3 years and its current residents include: the aforementioned pleco who will be replaced by 1-2 bristlenose plecos once Herschel has left 6 black skirt tetras 5- 6 kuhli loaches who I rarely see but give the cat hours of entertainment when they do appear 2 glass catfish 1 lonely pearl danio (the last of his school but has adapted to being alone quite well) 2 silver dollar tetras (one of which is on the road to recovery from what I believe to be an opportunistic fungal infection being treated by melafix and pimafix) When the silver dollar recovers I have a blue ram cichlid waiting to join the gang.
