Hi Stan, Are these the altum you bought from me? I had the same problem before. My altums were skittish for a long time but one day became well all the sudden. It was still a mystery to me. What I can suggest is the lower the light and water current. Add some tankmates such as corys or rams may help.

How did you crush pallets/flake food into powder form? I have a lot of flake laying around but they are too big for my baby fish. I though of using a food processor to do the job but I need to add water. I don't think it will work. Approeciate your expertise. I use a pestle and mortar, some people use a pepper mill or coffee grinder. Thanks Jason, It must take you a long time to grind them into powder form by using a pestle and mortara. i am hoping to use equipment of some sort to do the job.

If they were 1" in Feb, they are still young. The breeding age is 3 years at least. I bred tons of L46 in the past. Once they start, you'll see them eggs every 3-4 weeks. Good luck!

I need T8 so Sunblaster doesn't work. The reason for T8 is I need them for UV bulbs. I can't find T5 tube transmit UVA and UVB.

Called Rona in Spruce Grove and spoke to someone in the lighting dept. He told me they only carry 36" bulb but not the fixture. I had it in equipment sales section but it was moved here....I think the Moderator moved it. If anyone know who are selling 36" double T8 strip fixtures, please let me know. 48" is easy to find but 36" is hard.

I just moveed and found my RO doesn't generate as much RO water as it was in my old place. I suspect the water pressure is low. How can find out what is standard water pressure should be? How can I do a test to see if mind is low? Any suggestion?

Depending the size you want. I should have a few kicking around. Those were my home made for my L46 breeding. Only good for smaaller pleco such as ABN, L46 etc.

I believe L25 is on the ban list but surprisingly, I found some babies were up for sale earlier this year. They were sold out instantly. I was lucky enough to obtain a few and paid an arm for them. I think they may not be in the market again til next spring/summer. You Calgarian are lucky to have Gold Aquarium. Dennis should be able to get a hold of these beauties when they are on the price list.

IMO, it is next to impossible to breed fancy pleco such as L25 or L273. To my knowledge, there is 1 hobbyst in Planetcatfish bred L25 and another one from Taiwan had some success. Tank bred L273 and L14 is unheard of. Adult pleco such as L25 or L273 is very hard to obtain. Smaller size still cost an arm and leg and will take years to mature...... I am still kicking myself of selling my adult L25 breeding pair 4 years ago.

Just came across this. I would like to share what I know about Zebra Pleco in Edmonton. About 13 years ago, from the help of Rudy Kern, a senior Discus/Catfish breeder in St. Albert brought in a box of adult wild Zebra from Germany. After a couple of years, the group started to breed. Over the next few years, he was sucessfully rasied over 1000 frys. That was how Henry from Nature Corner (Dad's Fish Room) got the stock. Another LFS called Wing Fat Tropical Fish (In Jasper Ave and 99 Street. Shut down more than 10 years ago) got a lot of his fry and sold. This breeder was finally out of the hobby. He told me he gave his breeding group of a fellow hobbyst who is a mumber of the Aquarium Club of Edmonton. He still have the group (I believe) but unfortunately they had never spawn since he got them. In 1999, I was lucky enough to obtain a group of fry from him as well as from other sources to develop my own breeding group. During the next 6 years, I made several silly mistakes to kill a lot of them. In a single occasion, I made a water change with cold water and wiped out a whole tank of 40 sub adults. My group first spawn for me in 2005. Since than, I raised a 2-3 hundred fry. Some members in this board had seen my set up. Last year, I felt bore about breeding them and sold the group to a breeder in Vancouver. Now, I am keeping 7 young one just for fun. Zebra is not hard to breed. They will do it when time is right. All I have to say is Patience. Not very many hobbyst is willing to take 6 years to raise them from baby to adult. When they reach maturity, they will breed. One other problem is female is hard to get. Out of a spawn of 10, there may be only 1 female...or even none. If there are more serious breeders out there, Zebra Pleco will not be extinct. Just my 2 cents. Attached are the pictures I took in the past.

If your intention is to breed discus, you should also look at lowering the TDS as well. I don't know the water hardness in your area. In Edmonton, I mix 20% tap with 80% RO to bring the TDS to 90-100ppm. Ph is around 7.5 immediate after mixing. I use PH down powder from Canadian Tire. Add a little each time and measure the PH value. PH will bounce back after a little while. Keep on adding until it reaches the desire level but stop bouncing. After you've done a few times, you'll have a good idea of the amount you need to reduce the PH to the level you desire and not bouncing back. Good luck with your discus breeding.....

I think the board's spirit is to promote aquarium hobby and experience exchange. I don't see the problem of telling a bad experience. Yes, the spirit of the board is to promote the hobby; however, it doesn't take much for a company to decide it wants to sue for damages. I was a part of a forum several years back that was sued because someone said X company was bad. The suit went on for well over a year and expenses were in the tens of thousands. We have the vendor review survey coming up next month. Also, if you'd like to share negative experiences, maybe post a thread that says, "I had a negative experience with a _________ (online, Cgy, Edm, etc.) retailer. Please PM me if you'd like to hear." That way you can share your concern and not have to post it publicly. This makes a lot more sense.... I m happy with this explanation. However, my post was deleted without any communication. Tomorrow, I'll PM all who has respose to this post.

I totally agree human mistakes are unvoidable. However, no doublt the party who makes the mistake should fix it to keep his/her reputation.

I bought fish a few times from the U.S. and have them shipped to Edmonton. First of all, you have to find out if your supplier will ship to Canada. Most supplier don't do that. It's a hassel for them to export live tropical fish out of the U.S. Second thing is to arrange the shipment. As we are in Edmonton, most likely there is no direct flight from the origin. so the shipment ahas to be transferred from somewhere, Toronto, Vancouver, Denver....you name it. Make sure it is the same airline and tell your supplier to check with the airline they book the shipment with if the custom is to be clear in Edmonton. If not, say, has to be cleared in Vancouver, you may have to have a customer broker to clear it for you and tranship them tom you. Thirtly and last, clear the custom after the shipment is landed, if it arrives during office hours, you can clear it at th commerical custom office at the airport. This is easy to do.....But if it arrives outside office hour and you don't want to wait until the next day, you have to clear it at custom office in the terminal. They open 24 hours. This is the big hassel...... You may have to wait a few hours...often times when it's done, the flight cargo is closed.... the fish may have to stuck overnight...... Anyway..... the risk is high. Just my 2 cnets
