  1. All dry again. Fans are a friend now. I can not imagine what you are going through Ruadh. My tank only lost a couple of gallons over a few days, made the rug wet and sloggy but not the huge mess you are most likely going through. Best wishes in a speedy cleanup.
  2. Here is something that no one, including me wants to feel when they go into their fish room(s)---Squishy carpet. Sad to say that was me yesterday night at midnight. My fishroom is a bedroom hence the carpeting. So I go into panic mode-what is leaking-check all the tanks there are 3. Ow no one is low and just had a top up the day before, so madly go and do the obvious check for cracks, check for a broken silicone seal on any of the joints-nothing-so what is leaking. Not seeing anything, water is not gushing out-thank god. So a slow leak somewhere-still a leak but not blow-out. So I watch the back of the tank as the water is pooling on my stand/wooden filing cabinet. And low and behold it is not the tank it seems but the dang filter. :boxed: :chair: :boxer: :bang1: Something happened to the outgoing flow and it was starting to back up under the overflow and down the back of the tank and onto the floor. Who knows how long this has been going on, as carpet can soak up quite a bit before you get squishy, and it was wet half way in the room-not good. So had to madly grab towels, and more towels and got most of the water out of the carpet I could get too. I think I fixed the filter cleaned the overflow and such. Then marked the water line started it up and then had to go to bed had work in the morning. Got home early and moved out the tank- thank god it is only a ten gallon or there would have been major headaches. Grabbed more towels and soaked up some more water from the carpet I couldn't reach before and then the drying began and is still going as I type this. I think I need to start checking my tanks earlier rather than later-midnight is not the time to have a fishy emergency of any kind. Thou as many of us know fish tend to be more forth coming and calm when they can't see us, a dark room and a lit tank are a great viewing experience. Thanks for reading this very long post.
  3. I have heard that if you are using the high heat method-with or without salt to do gravel cleanings every few days to get rid of the ich/velvet cysts that fall off the fish. I have never used that method I tended to use Super Ich cure. I haven't had a full blown outbreak for quite awhile. I hope never to have another knock on wooden stand. Hope your betta and other fish recover.
  4. I bought a 33 gallon tank at the Ace auction. 7 of the 8 corners on the top and bottom trim are cracked. Is the trim vital for the tank? Or is it more decorative and just protects the edges of the tank? I am thinking of just filling the cracks with silicone-would this work? The inner silicone looks okay. I just don't want to fill the tank only to find that the trim is important and I have a water disaster. So any help would be great. Thanks.
  5. I bought a bag of Wild Bolivian Ram cichlids at the ACE auction. Now I need some info. What temp should they be at? Ph? tank mates? They like lots of plants right? I want them to be happy. Any info would be great. Thanks
  6. Many, many people. I always go a little crazy at the auction and this time was no different. I came home with a lot of stuff- 2 bags of weitzmani cories, a bag of 5 rasboras fry(impulse buy) :chair: , a bag of Bolivian Red rams, many many plants, the 33 gallon tank with stand, misc stuff. My brother was the one who bought the mystery box of fish stuff that the auctioneers warned us all about. Got home really late last night still not sure what is in the box. So the mystery remains. So nice to finally put a face to someone on the site (fishclubgirl)when they gave you the cake. Would also like to thank all the runners(who this time were really run off their feet)   and the auctioneers who without them their would be no auction    and last but not least all the people who put stuff in the auction- who make it worth it to drive 4+ hours to Edmonton for the auction.  Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. Females tend to be plumper when viewed from the side or the top. Males are more slender. Thou with 11 you should have some males. When you collect the eggs, do they just not hatch-- eggs that don't change color or are white (thou for sterbai I am not sure of the egg color when laid, I know bronze have white eggs that slowly change color to brown) or do they grow fungus? If they don't hatch then you have infertile eggs. Which means that you have a problem. Could be a male problem, or a female problem as in they are producing eggs but not viable eggs. Maybe add some live or frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp or micro-worms. Good luck.
  8. Mine is called Eversoft 100% Polyester stuffing. It is non allergenic, washable. I haven't had any problems with it other then the fact that until it is saturated with water it tends to float a little. In my HOB filters I put a wad of it in and then turn the filer back on and push it back down with either my finger or a skewer until it stays down. Changing it as needed. I also bought some filter floss from a fish store that is a mat, that you can make your own filter cartridges with two pieces and some thread. I haven't used it lately as it is easier to put in a wad of floss. Hope this helps.
  9. When you do buy it, make sure that the packaging says nothing about any chemicals being added. Some quilting floss and batting has mildew and mold reducing chemicals in it. I have a giant bag from Walmart, should last me for a few more years.
  10. She sure had a mouthful. The fry are surprising quite big, but then again I raise cories and guppies and they start out very small. Good luck with them.
  11. How many bettas do you have now? Sounds like you are going to have to start a stacking!
  12. You may want to think about putting another electrical plug or two into the basement. One closer to your tanks. I am guessing you are living in a fairly new house. I know I few people in new houses that only have two plugs in the basement. I can't really comment on the use of extension cords in the house, as I don't use any for my tanks, only to connect my tree at xmas. Thou I do have one on all winter to keep my dog's water ice free. But is an outdoor one.
  13. I know nothing about assasin snails. How big do they get. You could possible put one in your canister filter. If the pond snails are thriving in the filter maybe the assasin in the filter could control them. Just a thought. My tanks are crawiling with ramshorn snails but I feed them to my loaches. They don't seem to get into my filters but my MTS do occasionally and their shells stop the impellers, not a good thing. Good luck.
  14. Welcome to the forum. One question where is Ft. Kent?
  15. I know this is a fairly simple idea, and may be very hard in a 80 gallon tank is two large nets with handles. Place one net in the tank and leave it, don't try to move it til the fish are very near or in the net. Then slowly move the second net slowly herding the fish or more than one fish toward the net in the tank-go slowly as not to startle the fish as they will scatter. If you don't want to use a second net as a herder due to tank decorations you can use a wide shaped stick. This is not a fast process. You may find it easier to get a fishing net or two from a outfitter store as they are meant for larger fish and I think come with longer handles for fishermen in boats. I don't know if ciclids school when startled, but if they do catching more than one may be a bonus for you. Also you can leave certain fish alone by not herding them only the fish you want. I have used this method to catch skittish fish in a way smaller tank then yours but it worked with patience. Hope this helps-as no one likes to see fish sick.
  16. I once had three ten gallon tanks in my bedroom which was 12 by 12 with a bed, desk, clothes and lots of books. I then bought a house and now I have nine tanks, most of the rooms have more than one tank. My brother thinks I am strange, but I have now gotten him involved in the auction bidding. The more the merrier. He has given up on me the only request he has now is that I don't overwhelm the upstairs flooring and drown him in the basement which is his half of the house. My best friend can't understand why I have to visit pet stores in Edmonton when I come for a visit. I like looking at fish. It is relaxing and maybe she should try it. Sometimes the line between hobby and work is thin but as long as you are having fun it is good. I may be a little odd as I sometimes catch myself talking to my fish but hey they are alive and better then talking to a rock. -roll- -roll-

    Hi

:welcome: to another Grande Prairie Member. Like to see more locals on here. So welcome to the very informative site.
  18. Sometimes different cory species don't school together. They tend to like their own kind, but some will school with others. If you do get more corys try to get two more of each kind, pepper and panda. I have 9 panda cories and they like to school together which is cool. Skip the pictus. As for a snail-- mystery(apple) snails are neat and will eat leftovers but as the others have said they need calcium and eventually you might have to feed it also. I haven't had a apple snail in a couple of years.
  19. These question may have been asked before-if so forgive me. Are ramshorn snails and sword plants okay together. Or will the snails have a feast. I bought two sword plants and don't really have a tank for them-impulse buy-you all know the one-see a nice plant and have to have it. All my other tanks have BN pleco's in them- that is the other question will the BN eat the sword plants? If not then I have many tanks to choose from. Thanks for any info.
  20. I have a question for people who have coconut shells in their tanks. I have 4 bn in one of my tanks. I also have corys in that tank. I want to use a coconut shell in there for the BN to breed but not the corydoras to play with. So how large should the entrance hole be??? Thanks.
  21. Here is advice from a newer plant keeper The one problem with anubias and java fern and java moss is that they are low light, slower growing aquarium plants. Algae is a way quicker grower and will coat the slower growing plants. If you want to grow them then you may want to grow some kind of floating plant-riccia, pennywort (which I both have), try to stay away from duckweed (I have it and I have to take a wooden skewer and scrape the surface of the water with it to remove it quite frequently. The surface plants will diffuse some of the light so it is not so strong for the lower light plants. Just be aware that the surface floaters will take over if not controlled and create a mat-blocking all the light so keep them quite thin. For lights I have used My link they are 6500K and are compact fluorescent that fit into the average 10 gallon aquarium hood. With them you may find that one is enough and the other can be a normal 15watt aquarium bulb. I have two swords under the compact fluorescent bulb and they try and grow a new leaf each in about a week but that tank also has a algae problem on my anubias and java moss they don't like the high light but I also don't have any floating plants in with them. The swords are not affected by algae and they are right under the lights. I also haven't used excel- I have it but I use Flourish Comprehensive supplement for the planted aquarium every so often. I have found that when looking for aquarium bulbs you want to look for ones that say for planted aquariums- others are for saltwater, or are different wattages and K values. I tend to order my bulbs and tubes from petsandponds.com they are Canadian and have a good selection of lighting and other fish supplies. Other option is to try stem plants-which I don't have. I hope this helps and sorry for the long post.
  22. :welcome: to the forum. You sure have a mix of animals. It is nice to have a local forum that is very knowledgeable. So welcome.
  23. I am sad.  Can't make this auction. Have to help move my grandparents. I love the auctions and getting neat aquatic stuff-plants, fish and tanks. Will have to make sure I can come to the fall auction.
  24. I am sorry you lost your favorite angel. He looked quite pretty. Did he die of old age? We tend to get really attached to our fishy friends especially our favorites.
