  1. I keep some species of rainbowfish outside; they will survive even 12c for short periods. I had boesmani outside breeding in temps from 16 to 35 c even had that range in one day occur several times. This year I have C. alleni in a 40 gallon watering trough . With a heather set at 20c, it has been one week and so far so good. I use a hob filter. Some Val, and some hornworts. Also a potted Chinese evergreen, a plant that likes its roots in water. j
  2. I had an above ground ~150 gal. Tub that went from 16c to 34c in one day, more than once. I added a heater when it dropped to 14 one night, an set it to 18 c. I did cover 1/2 of the tub for shade with a sheet of foam insulation and covered 90 % at night. The boesmani rainbow fish and s.american river cichlids survived. The rainbows spawned every day and I harvested a hundred fry. J
  3. I have a used working motor and impeller I can sell for $ 10
  4. Prime will show ammonia for up to 3 days. This test cannot differentiate between "safe" and not safe. see seachem website.
  5. Very interesting.... wondering how the "label tape" is holding up? With prolonged exposure to the lights and the heat they give off there may be a breakdown over time. Also, how did you pick the power supply specs? This is beyond my understanding. Thanks John
  6. Welcome! There are people in fish club that have endlers. Perhaps come to a meeting on the first Tuesday of the month. www.edmontonfish.com/

  8. just stop no worries. ...Excell is know to kill vallisneria. As someone mentioned the photo period may need to be adjusted when you get too much algea growth
  9. Biodives "So far out of 9 plants tried, across 3 tanks, all 9 are growing and doing well." Why mess with a good thing. Looks like you found a balance that works for you. Be carefull with the RO addition only. Usually if you want reduced PH...in Edmonton... mix 25% tap water with prime of course. Some bottom feeding plants like swords like the addition of root tab fertilizers every 4 months or so. BTW most fish will be fine in edmonton water.......when breeding fish -for some species - may need lowering of hardness and or PH. "low ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels" ammonia and nitrIte must be 0 at all times > biological filtration. nitrAtes are removed with water changes and most folks aim for 5- 40 ppm (plants do well at 5-15 ppm in most applications)
  10. Looks like you got the bug The aquarium club of Edmonton has monthly meetings as well as a great auction nov. 6 http://www.edmontonfish.com/
  11. My experience with discus has been that they are a difficult fish to keep. You have to be prepared for a minimum of twice weekly very large water changes,..... forever. I also found that I needed to keep multiple meds on hand as they are fragile, get stressed easily ....and get sick. Local water is fine. They should not be kept with rainbowfish as these are too fast for the discus and they will go hungry, also the temp is too high for rainbows. The best way to get nice ones is to spend the money...... get 5" or 6 inch adult fish, preferable from a specialist retailer, one for every 10 gallons of water max. C.Jerom(sp) in Calgary had some 7" fish recently for $150 that were fantastic. Never seen better. Do lots of research and you can expect to pay 100-150 per fish. Check www.simplydiscus.com
  12. Those are lucky fish. .....living in that beautiful tank
  13. Tentative date is November 6 Same place as always
  14. I have had good service from these guys ...inexpensive as well https://www.aquasafecanada.com/
  15. Absolutely for the fish we keep. Depending on the species more or less. In the wild they can go into the shade or deeper for sunlight and temperature. Some, probably more then we know, live in complete darkness but you don't have them in your aquarium to often. As jvision mentioned timers are best. If they are spawning and producing life healthy offspring I do not think they are depressed,if they are capable of depression.....unhappy possibly, depressed?
  16. Welcome, nice looking tank. J
  17. I have mine with rose lines, rainbows and loaches. They are quite comparable and very active. May spook the knife fish if it doesn't have enough cover. The Angels may also be unhappy with the activity at spawning times as they are very fast and the males displaying very boisterous. I find that 7 is the minimum you would want. J
  18. It can be done. I would watch test....the dissolved solids they may go as high as 800. I know of Rainbows doing ok where angels and discus and others possibly not so much. J
  19. While I guess those are panda barbs, I have no idea about the cichlids Curtis Jerom or jvision (Jason ) might know. I have not seen those kind of sores...a swab with 3.5 % peroxide may work but in my limited experience I do not know. On could give a gentle squeeze to see if there is pus?
