  1. Your identification is correct....as to rainbows. also : Sahyadria denisonii rose line barb denisonii barb There is a case for doing nothing but big water changes and some frozen and or life foods for a few weeks. I would use a combo of Pima and Mela fix for a week. To heal fungus and help with body sores. The lacustris might have Popeye and may need treatment for that separately. Also I would sterilize the 140 gal. With h2o2 or bleach I preference peroxide as it leaves no residue. You can get 35 % at a hair store like Sally's about 6 bucks per litre. hth John
  2. Lovely mess. Fish are sick due to neglect of course. I have read about the ph drop but can't remember the chemistry. It is a separate issue at this point ....trying to save the fish is not easy as the owners don't care. You are very aware of the necessary steps but here is my take on it. The fish will adjust to the ph change over a week or so...... I would do 30% water change every day for 10 days, and clean the filter.... clean the foam very well under the tap, throw the OLD carbon out in 3 stages as it contains nitrifying bacteria now. Rinse the bio in tap water. Vacuum substrate in stages as you need the bacteria therein. Start treating daily, I would try a tea tree oil and Pima fix together as it is quit gentle to start. Good luck ....kindly now you are likely in a no win situation Take care J
  3. 9600 watts = 5-7 dollars per day Might be cheaper to run a gas line
  4. I would put a wall under it! center the wall under the tank....even a 2x4 wall on 16 inch centers would be good. 125- 150 gallon, 6 foot would be the most that is safe. 200 gallon + stand +/- 2300 lbs The best leveling foam is the one that is used for kids squares play carpet (they are 1/2 inch thick). You put the stand on the floor, the foam on top of the stand and the tank on top of that. Be aware that no matter how careful you are, the hardwood is going to get wet....sooner or later. get a wet floor alarm!!!
  5. Yes I agree .......the nematodes where already present. The above mentioned drugs will kill them within 6-12 hours, snails will take up to 2 days. I personally can't stand them even though they are harmless. J
  6. The auction rules state 30%, the rest is rounding I.E. pretty hard to pay 70% of $2.00 if you deal in whole dollars only. In any case please read the rules of auction.

  13. No expert ,here are my thoughts Planted fresh water tanks have very different needs from saltwater...which need much more light and at Kevin temps 14000 to 20000 Fresh water plants need 6500 K - 5000-7000 K One useful measurement is the par values as measured at different depths THROUGH water ..every 6 inches to maximum 24 inches. At 24 inches high light plants need say 50-80 par. Lower light plants 30 and up. Another measurement is the angle of dispersal through water, most used would be 120 degrees or rows of 90 degree for better penetration. It appears that at the moment the best results are with "Cree" led of up to 3 watts each. Heat from the lights needs to be dealt with and if using fans, noise is an issue. Non planted tanks can be served by cheap led's and as long as you penetrate to the bottom your good. 3000-7000K Plants like the red spectrum so a mix of red and white is common as are some blue led that can be timed for evening viewing so called moon light. Hope that gives you a start.
  14. Thanks everyone this above is exactly the plan planning to get a 20 inch unit John
  15. I have found most open cell foam to be very expensive.....shipping I guess from germany to the distributer in the states you get the picture......Poret is one of the best as Jason mentioned angelfins usually has a good selection you can buy smaller pieces as well there. I have some scrap pieces you could have however they are not big enough to use as one sheet. I have pushed several together before and it seem to work okay. J
  16. I want to install a drip system and need to remove the chloramines. Is it possible to use carbon filtration only to do the job? Thanks John
  17. Looks like internal parasites to me ..and I am a real expert you know LOL..... instead of lavimisol try flubendazole like Jay suggest It is a dog wormer if your local FS doesn't have it. Add to aquarium water at the suggested dosage stir well and add over an hour period. You could in addition up the temp to 85 over a day or so. It will not hurt the rainbows. Salt if you can't find the wormer. Start with 1 tsp per 5 gal increase to 3 tsp over 24-30 hours leave at that strength for up to 10 days.
  18. The eggs just need a few bubbles of air per second -till hatching takes place. Since boesmani hatch in 6-10 days depending on temperature, your "new" sponge will be fine by then. Just transfer it in the first day or so after hatching. You will need smaller than 50 micron food for the first week to 10 days.
