  1. You could try to grind a bit of food to dust and deliver it with a straw after you suspend it in a bit of water. I have used a syringe attached to airline as well.....you could deliver it in front of them. You could buy a 10 cc syringe at any vet I would think.
  2. Two things to consider, the size of water change, if nitrates went from 60 to 20 that would indicate a 60-75% change. If your fish are not use to that stress could result in death. And perhaps not enough water conditioner.

    Hello Everyone!

Might as well empty a room now. Have fun
  6. Looks like you had a fun afternoon Rick, fantastic pics as usual. This takes a lot of skill ! They do indeed light up like multi coloured christmas lights in my tanks as well, and getting better every month. Can hardly wait to see them at 2 yrs of age. For those of you that don't have any I do have 2 or 3 pairs left. John
  7. They will likely do it again....mine used large leaved plants. and 50% water changes per week.

    Hi

Hi back welcome to the forum lots of good advice available J
  9. Looks like you're well on your way to a nice tank. Always exiting to start a tank. If you feel you want to go a bit faster I could provide you with a seeded sponge for your 110 I have a couple on my tanks, you could put fish in right away. I also have a couple of Anubias and crypts if you wanted Prices for the plants would be very reasonable John
  10. Nice tank! Here are some common things that might apply in this case. algea = some kind of inbalance.. 1./ too much or too long lighting period 2./ tanks that are too immature will go through different types of algae till they mature. 3./ Co2 helpful but you can use a substitute like seachem excel Your valisnaria (looks like you may have that) will not like the excel and will die down. 4./ too much food added will add algae very fast. I would shorten the photo period to 8 hours a day to start as most of your plants are low light to medium light you might turn of one of the lights until things settle down. chek that your not feeding too much. HTH John
  11. i believe he is open afternoons only...last time i spoke to him, about a month ago
  12. I have used 1 tsp per gallon and temp up to 92 with rainbows and others. The best success however has been a product for marine tanks -don't remember the name- but you can get it at aquarium illusions about $40 per jug, highly effective and 1 jug will be 2x what you need. HTH John
  13. Small hole in the cover, well thought the full grown SAE. LETS JUMP. 😥 Oops falling falling, no more water....oh oh.😱😱 So I walk in the room because of the wierd noise, took a full minute to figure out there is a fish flopping behind the tank.....go get a broom and ladder.. Move the fish 7 feet with the stick in a 3 inch space somewhat cluttered with hoses and cables and a few years of stuff. Fish still moves, put fish in tank, sinks like rock but some fin movement...... Now a week later fully recovered, it must of been out of water for at least 3-4 minutes, fell 4 feet and appears to be okay. 😀
  14. Yup that will do it. Great catch B. John
  15. Most rainbows are veroucious eaters and so that can be a problem when you have too many of the larger bows. The smaller varieties should not be a problem A couple pair of Lacustrus should not be a problem as long as you watch that everyone gets food. The 3 inch M.macculocci (skull creek) is a top dweller and too many of them will out compete your rams but a few pairs should be okay. The lasers should be fine. I have seen blue rams with the smaller varieties and they did well. HTH John
  16. I often get pissed by my third try but I get it going eventually. Jason's way also works.........not my first choice😱
  17. They can be a pain to prime Try this; open the valve to the top position let all the pressure off by lifting the valve off the filter body slightly, leave the handle up. Now pour 2 glasses of water into the fill tube. Replace the cap. Reset the valve into the header and wait a minute or 2. restart....should work.
  18. I also use Chinese evergreen, anthurium ,piece lily and bamboo with roots only in the water, the pothos will get very long and needs to be managed as in trellised or strung along on some nails. I have a 54W HO T5 above and growth is very fast. I am surprised as to how many plants it takes to keep the nitrates in check......6 -8 well established plants in 6 inch hanging baskets on a 70 gallon. Also evaporation adds a lot of moisture in winter. John
  19. The M.herbertaxelroddi is not a trifaciata so 2 species names for one fish.
  20. They will spawn regularly, when the temp is up. They would like a cooling down period for 3 months some time during the year, even down to 13 C., they will live longer if they get that.
  21. Looks like about a month old. They are extremely good at hiding and I would not be surprised if you were to find a dozen more. My clutches are usually around 30 but some will get eaten. If you move a pair you should be able to breed a lot fairly fast as the are not fussy an only require some place to hide, They will like to eat some zucchini and or watermelon rinds or broccoli or green beans. I stick some on a fork so it will sink and change daily John
  22. I don't think it is in his nature; however.............
  23. Congrats! What kind of rainbow is it? I have found that checking the nitrAtes when feeding that many fry is a good idea as it can elevate quickly and could be a cause of them dying. J
