Mine are looking very similar. Coloring varies on mood, but there is still quite some variety in the colors. The barring is not evident most of the time, I think that's something that they grow out of.

j Congrats! I have some breeding too, but I have to make sure I take them out, between the petricola & the mbuna in the tank they usually only last 7-10 days.

I have 4 XP3's now, never used FX5's. I like the flow on the XP's (yet no where near the FX5)...the cleaning it really nice with the baskets. You can get a new XP3 for around $180, so it is much cheaper than the FX5.

I saw FX5 at PJ's for $389...that's definately not the cheapest place. Most places are around $350 new.

my 33 gallon (Hagen) bows in the middle...been running for almost two years, and had it several years ago for about four years. If I had to guess I'd say it's around 7-8 mm. It's definately noticeable from the side of the tank, or if you look at the top, it doesn't line up with the canopy.

I have 2 XP3's on a 150, plus 2 powerheads and built-in canopy filtration. You could do it with one if it wasn't heavily stocked, but you'd be changing the cannister much more often and need to vaccum frequently. 2 would be my vote.

I haven't used one, but they are a louder than most other cannisters, and use more electricity (I think it's about 50W). They also stop for a period of time every 24 hours to purge any air, and then it starts back up. I haven't come across anything about them that would stop me from buying one though.
