  1. From my experience with strawberries I've never been able to sex them at a couple of weeks old. So I doubt that the color differences have anything to do with male/female. I've also never seen stawberry fry that are brown/grey but when you breed hybrids you often get fry that end up looking nothing like their parents. I have tons of OB peacock fry, 90% look like OB's the other 10% are a plain grey with some faint stripes. Keith
  2. I've now got an extra compartment on the bottom for the remaining fry. I've tried to remove this female and let her spit the fry a couple of times but for some reason she doesn't ever hold longer then about a week.
  3. She's about 4 to 4.5 inches. Quite big.
  4. Well my Ob Peacocks were at it again and yesterday I stripped my female only to get 129 partially developed fry (WOW). I was super pumped. I took the little guys and transfered them to the tumbler. With so many fry I needed to use two trays. Long story short, this morning I woke up to find my small pleco sucking the fry out of the tumbler from the bottom. Only 4 left in the bottom tray, and unfortunately most were in that tray. The little sucker got about 80 of them during the night. I never thought a pleco would do that. Anyways, lesson learned. I thought I should share this story so someone doesn't run into the same situation. Keith
  5. Definitely go with the plywood!!
  6. I've heard that by raising or lowering the temp of your tank you can manipulate the sex of your fry. Is this really the case? If so how does it work? Higher temp more males or more females? Thanks
  7. Lake Newell near Brooks has lots of crayfish. The NE corner of the lake seems to be the best place to catch them. Just put out a minnow trap with any kind of meat in it. They are however illegal to possess and transport alive.
  8. Thanks very much for the clarification!
  9. I see different fish described as F1 or F2, what does this actually mean? Is one more desireable than the other? Thanks in advance.
  10. I'm in the process of tearing apart some raised flower beds that were built up with some nice rocks. You are welcome to them if you're interested. Send me a PM if you would like. Keith
  11. here is a good link http://www.timstropicals.com/FreshwaterFis...hlids/index.asp Thanks Frontosas there's some great pics at that link
  12. Can anyone suggest a good website where I can actually see godd pictures of most cichlids. I read all these names on here and would like to put faces to thase names. Thanks
  13. Hi I'm new to the forum and this great hobby. Have been keeping an assorted cichlid tank for about 4 months now and have loved every minute of it. My two boys 5yrs and 3yrs are addicted aswell. We've even had our OB peacocks have about 20 fry. Pretty exciting for a beginner. Thanks for all the good info I've gotten here already! Keith
  14. Would anyone have an idea where I might find an L66 Pleco in the Calgary area?
  15. Gold's Aquarium in Calgary has a few in stock now at $34.99 each. They are about 2" long. I was thinking of getting one but was told that they often grow up with deformities. Does anyone have any experience in that matter?
