  1. Infected wound or any sickness Hospital tank and keep the water really really clean, UV light if you can, a smidgen of salt can't hurt. daily full water changes with exactly the same temp of water to avoid stress, NLS whichamacallit food for sick fish. that's what I would do to start
  2. Hi I noticed one night this Fish was near the top of the tank in the middle breathing really really hard. The other fish avoided them or chased it away and there were no signs of stress on any other fish (breathing, black barring on the peacocks, clamped Finns, not eating, flashing, excess slime coat, etc.) the ONLY symptom on ANY fish was the heavy breathing on the one Mbuna. I fell asleep and in the morning it was dead. I pulled it out and since it hadn't been touched by the other fish I checked the gills. NO Gill tissue was left except the Gill plate. absolutely no trace. It just had bare bone visible. I have done a water change and dosed with salt but I really need to identify the culprit so I can prevent this from happening again! THANK YOU
  3. Hi I picked up an Aqua clear 500 that was missing the impeller shaft. I was hoping someone who has one could give me the measurements of it as I do have a number of Spare unlabeled impeller shafts. And does anyone know where I can pick up another motor for the extra housing I picked up. Thank you Everyone!
  4. I would be interested in a group buy. I was at that meeting and it was very very intriguing!
  5. belvedere sports on 82nd st just north of yellowhead
  6. a little tip i picked up is 1 never go cheaper cuz it'll cost you and 2 don't use a heater rated for a tank larger than what yours is. Not saying you did just a tip in case you might have. Sorry it happened to you.
  7. stop by the dollarstore and get little craft ziplock bags and portion out meals out for each tank in them and label the day. Be Sure she knows that you cannot double the amount if she forgets a day and its no biggie if she does forget a day or two. Automatic feeders are my lifesaver. Have dechlorinator and bacterial supplement with easy emergency doseing instructions taped to THE bottle ie. 1 capfull. Have a list of contacts she can call for questions. speak to your nearby fish store not general pet store to see if they would mind if you listed them as a contact for when you are gone. you could put the bloodworms in the baggies too. Depending on weather in July and your setup have a backup in case of overheated tanks. frozen blocks of dechlorinated water in ziplock bags work well. an extra ziplock handy so she canrun to the store if she is unsure about the water. Good luck L
  8. oh and its about a centimeters in diameter and perfectly round. it also definitely not the waste hole. Got a better look. its easily 5millimeters deep if not more the flashlight couldn't see all the way in.
  9. Its reddish in spots about the width of his body on host belly almost between the fins. I can't get a good look at it he doesn't appear stressed but I could be wrong about that because I h ave never seen him anything but fully coloured. I am baffled. Help
  10. Thanks everyone. I have a bubble curtain in that tank going at all times to keep my white sand clean so no worries there. In terms of overstocking well it definately is because it is an african cichlid tank and the yellows won't stop spawning. Anyway long story short thank you Jayba i did plug it in and no worries. I guess it pays to buy the best in more than one way. It was the water pouring out from where the power cord goes into the unit that had me panicing. Thanks again everyone now everyone is as happy as can be. L
  11. I just took off my Eheim Pro 3 cannister filter to rinse (in tankwater) and add some filter floss. When i went to put it back on the tank i filled it up first with some tank water to get it started easier. as i was lifting and slightly tilting it to place it back under the tank i noticed allot of water coming out from the edges. I thought at the time the seal was not on properly or some such. I took it out again and went into the bathroom and removed the lid. The TOP was pouring water from every hole including from where the electrical cord goes into the unit. Now i'm scared to plug it in and fry it completely. ANYONE Please some advice. My 80 gallon currently has had NO filter for a half an hour now. Thanks L
  12. A photo based beautiful tank contest would be wonderful for those that dont want visitors and those that dont have excellent cameras. To avoid fraud the winner would haveto post another recognizable photo with some random object inside it like 3 one inch pieces of airline tubing. Not everyone has a good camera and almost nobody thinks their tank will stand up to others so to avoid the whole embarrassment some might have thinking their thank isnt good enough or just pkain old not wanting to be critisized there should be numbers and no names attatched. To avoid a lack of participation have a minimum number of participants or else the contest doesnt go ahead to prizes. Give 3 months for people to get their tank perfect and when the photo is submitted reply with your choice of random object or number taped to the tank glass. and have them take the picture immediately in case of disaster. If i was better with techy stuff id volunteer to organise but i fear it would only end in dissappointment that way Heres to hopeing and i would love to see someone win a contest like this. L
  13. Thanks for the bit on Ferts and shrimp. About the florish substrate you can forget about gravel vaccuming. In my fluval edge that same stuff has degraded and any disturbing of the substrate sends up huge clouds of fine black sediment that takes forever to clear up. If i had the ability to go back in time there would be no way on earth that i would use it again. Personally if you want the softer water you need to remember CO 2 does affect ph by lowering it. In doing my reading and questioning before seting up my Edge planted tank i remember hearing that one of the biggest reasons for persistant problem algae is lack of water flow. I strongly reccomend the powerhead sponge filters as they serve a dual purpose. If you want air at night put a airsone in on a timer you could even have some fun with underwater hidden led lighted bubble curtains for a nighttime change of pace a smal whie one on the bottom behind a pile of rocks in the middle to backligt the rocks oohhh i am getting excited just picturing it in my head. The lights are about as bright as moonlight so not very but the effect could be stunning. Good luck L
  14. Thank you for all the help with my Koi all those years ago He has since moved into a huge beautiful pond nearby with lots of fishy friends. Welcome to AA.
  15. Take 2 flat pieces of slate and place the corner of them on the curtain and bury the rest in the sand. the slate won t be heavy enough to kink the hose but the shape will do a better job of not being moved off whereas a rock can be rolled or tipped much easier. Suction cups work BUT only of you dont have the sand in the tank when you put them in and have something to attatch it to thats small on both ends Bubble curtains do a really great job of stirring up any debris off the bottom of the tank so the filter can pick it up
