  1. Personally I like hybrids, plenty of leg room and great for the atmospere.... I was against them for years, what I find I am against more is africans sold as "Mixed Africans" and people breeding them and then selling the fry as the one fish they can identify. Fish should be bred for sale in a species tank, then we know the strain is true. If breeding hybrids, saying what it is, is plausible, Altering it surgically or injecting it with dye is downright animal abuse. Breeding an animal to create a certain look or personality is acceptable unless the outcome renders the animal useless or somehow keeps the animal in pain. I bought My baby His first fish, it is a flowerhorn, I knew it was a hybrid and payed exactly for that. I love this fish, it has quickly become the coolest fish I have ever owned and it's temper is awesome. I also bought it knowing it would likely not go well with other fish, whether selling hybrids or pure strains, this info is more important. On the other hand I also bought a 6+" Blood Parrot at an auction, I knew what I was buying, but feel now after owning it for awhile that this fish is bred cruelly. It's mouth is almost useless for eating or defending itself, It's body is so distorted that it couldn't escape well either. I don't believe this fish was altered with care but with intentions of creating a mutant. Not all hybrids are bad, not all dog hybrids are unhealthy or nasty, If that were the case we'd all keep wolves and walleye for pets as even bringing fish from another country is not technically "natural" I say that before judging hybrids, own one. That is why I bought the parrot and the flowerhorn, I now think the parrot was a sick joke and the flowerhorn is the fish of a life time. This thing arrived dead, not breathing for atleast 10 minutes. It is growing like mad now, it's colors and friendliness are incredible and it's ability to kill stuff put's My dovii to shame. Know what you buy, this is where I see mixed africans a bigger crime for stores to sell as these people will re-sell their fry without knowledge that their fish are a kenyi/zebra cross etc... and the next people will sell their fry as whatever they can identify them closest too. Last year I bought some pure discus, powder blue they were suppose to be, it ended up that they died, they were turquoise dyed blue and the blue stained My hands and carpet. This is a crime!!! selling Flowerhorns with knowledge that they are flowerhorns and whether they are fertile or not is an honest business. To each their own though. Is it any better to sell Your 10th generation inbred fish as Wild or F1??? It's all a matter of opinion and morales. I will never regret getting Miracle the Flowerhorn for My kid, except now I need to get Me a fish that cool.
  2. Hatching them is the easy part I use softener salt and it works fine but breeding them would be awesome. Not that I'd get enough for feeding anything but it would just be pretty cool. They say the lakes they come from vary in salinity. The one by Moose Jaw SK itself varies almost day to day which makes sense. more evaporation higher salinity, more rain, lower salinity, so I dont think they are too specific. Next year I will harvest a bunch there but I have heard that because of the salinity it freezes almost 20 feet down some winters. Fascinating. Anyways My quest is to just raise a couple of adults and maybe get an egg or two, not for feeding My fish but just so I can see their tiny crowns and happy faces like on the back of My old comics.
  3. This is one hell of a program, even makes My photos look better and sharper. All I do is load My photo's into it and click on autofix.
  4. I am guessing this would be a good catagory for this, I would like to get Some bbs to adult size. What is the best way to do this? I have seen some done in just a jar in a window and the got huge with no feeding or help other than the algae that the sun. The water was never changed at all. I'd like to try a different route. I have 2 lbs of spirulina powder as food. I will be using a 2 gallon tank how many should I try in here?

    Heater Failure

Once, but the heater was cheap and I needed one after the fish store was closed. I caught it before it fried anything and removed the heater, fish are much better at room temperature than boiling. I believe it was a radiant hang-on and some water got in under the cap and caused chaos.
  6. I think the new Ebo's are oviously not the old reliable ebo's. Therefore they should have changed their name completly. It is just as important to make a good choice in heaters and equipment as it is to maintain them. Daily checks of temperature, filtration and lighting and regular maintenance is never replaced by good equipment. I have had people come to Me and tell me that they had such big filters that they never did waterchanges. Hmmm, ever open a fluval that has been run on an overstocked tank for 7 months without ever being opened? That smell would put chilli festival poo to shame. The point is, all companies make a bad piece every now and again, some more than others. Set up your heater, rinse firstin warm water. place heater in tank according to heater, submerse or not according to I mean. make drip loop before plug. Plug in and wait. Keep checking water temp when temp is reached, back heater up so light just shuts off. add a little cooler water and check that light goes on. If it's a glass heater never expose while plugged in as it will get too hot and any water hitting it will cause it to break likely. Check inside glass if it it glass, look for humidity inside. Oh and don't put glass heaters in aquaria with large robust fish. Of coarse we all know these steps, they're on the box. Except for maybe the guy who boiled his Tropheus by going to bed after setting up his new heater. Following these steps means that if You buy a lemon of any brand, You can return it before it creates fatalities.
  7. So far the eggs are still good aside from a here and there clump of bad. Th Red Devil has had nothing to do with them since. I think unless a huge fungus takes over them, there should be a few okay. I can't even begin to gues how many eggs but maybe 1,000 including the white ones. We'll see where it goes, this freak of nature pairing has got My full attention until then. Maybe the male will eat the fry as neither of them has ever had fry before. I put the two together so they would be active, both are just still doing nothing, I kinda wish they were males again.
  8. Not yet but I think they will, maybe not all of them but I'll let them try. Last weird pairing I had was convict/firemouth, they were pretty blah. These would be deadly. I do have a bud that accidentally did Festae and his Dovii. He only got about 50 good fry out of a tonne of eggs. He destroyed them all when He discovered that the Young were breeding, thought they'd be sterile. I think it is the male that should be pure strain then even if the female was a hybrid her eggs would get fertillized. time will tell what happens though. Personally there are much better fish to breed but these are two of My favorite fish.
  9. It's funny on review boards like that, that only the people with problems reply. All of the heaters had a stash of bad reviews. Especially the one guy who turned it on, set it and went to bed, where do You find boneheads like this? I would love to trade him some shiney coins for some boring old paper money, lol. The reviews make all of the heaters look so crappy that I would not trust any of them. Life is a lemon and I want My money back! I wish people who liked their products would spend the time they saved not messing around with junk and returning products to write simple positive reviews instead of all of the negative reviews. Over-all though, if a person just read the stats page they should get a pretty good idea. I would only abide by the reviews though with a huge grain of rock salt. Visa therm looks good though, Ebo Jager is almost always a reliable favorite. I also have a 250 watt Guardian that I have no grief at all with, My Red Devil has been beating it for months now with no fluctuations. Every brand has it's lemons, that is why We have warranties. About a month ago a guy was driving a Lexus down the highway here and his axel snapped, it was on a test drive with the dealer, He still bought a Lexus just not the one He tested and the model wasn't recalled. All products have their good and bad, We just hear about the bad thats all.
  10. Warranty? I just phone Ed and He sends it, no cost. There are few things that can go wrong with an RO unit. Blowing a seal, every new filter comes with a seal so no re-using. Of the 7 systems I've purchased I have only had one part missing which was sent out on two day rush. For most aquarium uses DI is unecessary but I use it on My drinking water anyways. Coconut filters are way more efficient than paper as well which many companies carry. Also make sure the filters are a standard fit, people who move to the middle of Saskatchewan will be screwed trying to find special filters, Aquasafe uses a fit that takes even under the sink filter if one should need a quick fix.You can also buy the Maximus Which comes with extra filters, DI for DI units, TDS meter and PSI meter this is the works for $199.50 USD 6 stage RO with DI 21 pack of replacement filters PSI meter TDS meter 4 bags of replacement DI beads All fittings and tap 4.4 gallon storage tank Easy flush flow restrictor Good to 99.9% removal There is really no reason to send a unit back and as for parts, just phone Ed, he says nothing is ever 100%. If You can find the problem, he'll replace it, if You do it 10 times in a row, he'll get suspicious. The price is almost the same as coralife if You go with the smaller 100 GPD 6 stage unit with DI but no tank for $96.00 CAD. How big is the tank with the coralife? Does it have an easy flush flow restrictor? that once a week flush is a huge benefit. Once You see how Your DI beads go black and dead looking, You are happy You have them to pulverize Your excess crud. I would contact him anyways and talk to Ed, no one else. He is hilarious and a super guy. Like I said little can go wrong with an RO unit. They take 20 minutes to hook up and even though he says they almost always leak a little at first till You tighten them up bit By bit, I have had only one drip after installing it and a touch with the wrench fixed it. I have two tanks now as well so I take the extra one camping, can't beat that. My first RO unit was a $1200.00 3 stage culligan junker. A pretty tower and green blinky light with their pro install. The green light meant water was good, after a year the light was still green, but I opened it up anyways to find that the wrapper was on the carbon. Yep, carbon was brand new. The other cartridges though cost more than the whole Aquasafe system.

    Magnum Hot...

I read You there, the last big diatom i had was the same way. Using filter mode first for the larger particles worked better. I even like the filter part of it though, whether carbon or amrid it holds a good supply of it and the water flows over it nicely. I like the design a tonne and My cory sterbai are already starting their spawning dance. If I spent $60.00 just to spawn My cories, it would be money well spent. How much use I will get out of the diatom though is still unknown. It is a nice cross between canister and power which I like but the flow diversion on it can make it much more effective as a normal HOB filter pushes down on the water and it takes along time for it to capture particles, this you can create a swirl which uses the flow to push the debris to the filter. I did find though that hanging My AC500 on the side of the tank worked alot better in cleaning than normal fashion. I guess it's just preference. I guess I could use My pond vaccuum just as easy and it may even be quicker at 2,000 gph but I don't know if it would get as clear, the turbulence may blow the fish out as well as I can't adjust it below 1,000 gph cause I broke the knob on it. Aside from that it wouldn't be practical. For the cash though, so far it has done a real nice job. I prefer it way over the old fluvals but see change in the new ones that may change My mind. For now, I am liking this guy a tonne.
  12. I always find fish get along better in fast water, or atleast the fights don't last as long. My pump running to My wet dry is a little over done so I had to divert it a little. I agree though except with the longer titaniums You can place them center and side ways in the cooler water column about 6" off bottom it gives a little cool spot still but a nice even heat. either way it doesn't seem to matter but if i ran two heaters I'd buy the controller as well.
  13. Actually I just set up the WON titanium heater from Kensfish, a 500 watt with the controls on the outside and love it. My tank is almost warm in no time. Titanium is the only way to go, no more broken heaters. The controls on the outside save your hands from PO'd fish. They aren't to bad of price either. I don't know if there are any more 500 watt kits but the tubes are easy to install onto the controllers. Here is a pic of the 350 watt for $22.95 USD If you order do 6-10 days shipping it should take only 7 days and it will come duty free.
  14. I thought they were guys, I thought wrong, My Dovii's tuber is out and My Red devil is flirting with her. Wholly Smack!!! At first they tried to kill one another through the divider, even found a tooth in the egg crating. Now she's out and about and schmoozing the red devil like no tomorrow, both thingers are out and ready to rock. Question is, will I raise them??? Yep. Will I sell them? Nope. But I can't resist seeing the results. I am damn excited!!! I've gone from a hybrid hater to an owner of devil/dovii crosses, blood parrot and two flowerhorns on the way. It's not that I prefer hybrids, well then again, if I get a red devil personality with dovii size and choppers, that may change. Aside from that there will be alot of feeders for My venustus.

    Magnum Hot...

I just hooked up My magnum hot...... Just a sec..... Yeah it's running, okay here goes. Love it, love it and love it!!! I got it for two reasons. one is for extra current and clean water for spawning My sterbai, second is just to polish water from tank to tank. I love almost everything about it, except... there is always and exception. The little spray outlets kinda blow in more ways than one. The design is a bit flaky and cheap. But buying a diatom filter unit for $60.00 brand new hurts my feelings not. I didn't get the bio-wheel since I find it to be Marineland's most useless gimmick, it's not Scottish, so it must be Cr@#. I love the ease of maintenance, especially the clip to hold it together, unlike the fluval, I didn't break the clip on the first run, lol. It ran on My filthy dovii tank (which is cleaned and waterchanged every second day, but he's a pig) for 1/2 hour and the water looks great. It won't really pick up the big poo of course but they say You can hook a vaccuum up to it for that, it did though remove the billion scales and particles in the tank left over from poo and feeders. I love this filter. On My cory spawning tank I will run carbon not the diatom and have quite a bit more experimenting to do with it such as hooking up the gravel vaccuum but It is a super cool design and a nice quiet effective filter. I never bought one before because of the price tag here. I got Mine at Kensfish and won't regret it, I think I will buy a few more. It would be nice to run this as a secondary filter to the wet/dry on My 180 flowerhorn tank. I will also be running a large 500 watt WON heater from Kensfish, I like the titanium for bulldog heater breakers like flowerhorns and the outside controls are nice if Your fish is having a pissy day. Good stuff from Ken again. By the way He will also be bringing in Seachem Iron on Friday for those who use it and like to add their iron separate like Me. Looking for a cool filter? Magnum Hot is a pretty sweet package. Wet Your seals before assembly though... I read that after I sprayed Myself.
