  1. thanks, yea i thought of bamboo as well, I would want it to look reasonable too as this is a living room set up hmmm gotta think of a way to set this up....
  2. i am going to look into the plant thing i guess, i really have no interest myself in keeping them, but if they help i may have to. Will i absolutelyn eed to upgrade my bulbs? and what type of plants and how many would be the easiest to deal with/affordable that would help me? thanks!
  3. thanks....I want to keep the water changes on my fry tank as low as possible until they grow out a bit, any otehr suggestions? or answer to the prime thing? RD or dipset??
  4. hey guys, so my ammonia and nitrite levels are fine, however my nitrate levels in all of my tanks are through the roof, and i dont really know what to do, I read that prime will help deal with high nitrates, so can i just add some, if so how much and it will bring my levels down? or does it just change it to a less harmful nitrate but will still show high levels in my test? please help! this isnt good for my fry..
  5. please excuse my ignorance its been a long wknd of homework and studying :P---- what do you mean by 'some MTS'? sand is easy to deal with when using a vac..... takes a little getting used to, but skimming the surface of the sand usually removes the debris and very little sand .
  6. ahhh the inbreeding topic, comes up in any type of breeding and there is always a lot to be said. thats a good link though RD, you always have so much information. I guess at the end of the day if you can know your bloodlines and traits throughout the pedigree of the animals to be bred inbreeding or outcrossing in itself isnt right or wrong. I think the idea for each of them to create their own bloodline and then be availible to eachother if they want and/or need to outcross to eachothers lines is a good way to go about it especially when most people have limited tank space.I like the comments on that thread about allowing the fish to choose their own mates as well. Sooo tempted to get involved in the EBJD they were my original interest when i got more serious about the fish world, but being fairly new i decided to opt out due their cost and difficulty level. good luck on your projects!
  7. by jonah's he meant fatpuffer on here.. normal jacks do get bigger and overall tend to be more aggressive and healthier(thats why if you get to the point of having actual blue fry you must remove them from the others), raising EBJD's to a mature size can be a bit of a challenge. If you are serious about this project and sticking to it, i would suggest getting in touch with others that are doing the same thing, the blue gene carriers are very valuable and obviously with this process inbreeding becomes an issue so having others bloodlines availible from the unrelated females they bring in that the blue males are bred to is a good thing to help strengthen the fish and gene pool overall as this seems to be the major issue cropping up with the EBJD.. good luck!
  8. I purchased a second hand water change system thats supposed to hook up to my sink it has two different options neither of which fit my sink in my apartment, so i went out and purchased an adapter to make it fit only to find that the peice it attached to was leaking, so i need to find an adapter for the 2nd peice which of course is a different size. This may be confusing, the point is i need an adapter for my sink and home depot cant help does anyone know of a good place in edmonton to go that could help me and would have a wider range of options for me? thanks
  9. VERY NICE jonah... congrats...how big is he exactly? Love the name too Kimbo hahah nice work
  10. Well I have about 150-250 ish fry, most are free swimming now.
  11. WHen i try to access my breeding thread that i set up, it pushes all the posts to the left and scrambles them and doesnt give me the option to add a reply or anything. I tried starting a new thread to see if that would work, but it wouldnt let me add anything but the tiniest picture , i kept shrinking them and it got to the point where it wasnt even worth posting them at that size (it was a pic of several fry free-swimming). Im sure these are just issues due to the new system here, but i figured ide make sure who ever deals with this knows. When opening the threads it also has delayed loading of the page.
  12. yea i see where it makes sense, spreading his seed type deal, I just thought it was pretty unusual as they usually remain monogamous at least for the duration of the breeding cycle. I know other cichlid species do it though.
  13. so aside from my short body pair, i have 3 young female and one male 'regular' texas cichlids. The male paired up with one of the females about a week ago, staked out a cave, and a couple of days ago they layed eggs. My tank has several caves...about a foot away another female has started to go into breeding colors and clear out a cave ...the odd thing is that the male is pairing with her as well! ..he is helping clear the cave out with her and doing the mating ritual rubbing etc...not agression ...he is over twice her size and if he wanted her gone he would have no problem doing so, prior to this he chased her away. he spends his time going between the two females. and chasing off the remaining female has been shunned to the corner. Has anyone seen this behaviour before ?
  14. thanks for the comments, and yes it is kind of funny/interesting, and obviously views vary greatly on the 'viable variant' issue. From what ive read though and others who have bred short body's there may not be a lot (if any) short body's from the spawn. I would like them, but I would also be ok with some standard sized offspring as these have the larger pearls that i like and are harder to come by, the female's pearls are better than the males just hard to get a good pic of her as she is so shy. Regardless im happy with my first breeding and hopefully i can grow them out...
  15. thanks for all the help you guys, i have some brine shrimp eggs on the go and will be picking up microworms as well as some hikari first bites so i should be ok
  16. Well my Short BOdy Texas Pair bred, didnt change into stress/breeding dress so it took me a while to notice the eggs, it was their first go at it so i figured the eggs wouldnt be fertilized , had to seperate them and suprisingly they are now hatching into wigglers, cant get pics of the wigglers my cam's not good enough, but u can see the pair and the eggs on the rock and ill update as things progress (if i can keep them alive)
  17. yea female....female-female pairing isnt that unusual two of my female parrots have paired and i guess its pretty common.
  18. thanks...know where to get any microworm cultures locally? how long do they take to yield babies?
  19. thanks thats what im gonna try as well...do you know the best place to get shrimp and what kind of salt do i use, is it just normal aquarium salt or?!
  20. I have some texas cichlid eggs that should hatch in the next 48 hours if all goes well, and i will need to hatch some baby brine shrimp to feed them, wondering if anyone can send me a link to the best directions for this easiest way to set it up at home? or if you guys know of any kits you can buy in the edmonton area....also alternatives to using baby brine shrimp for food would be appreaciated too! hopefully i can get some replies soon so i can get on top of this i should add, i had to seperate the eggs into their own 10 gallon for hatching as i didnt expect babies (the parents didnt go into breeding dress) and they were still in a community setting so i couldnt seperate the others... cheers
  21. so the diatom filter is that something you only use off and on? or can you leave it in, are they really exspensive? thanks guys
  22. very nice! my short body texas pair just bred, i would love to get pics like this, however its unlikely i will get any fry as it was their first try......love the photo though!
  23. Thanks I think Im going to use an extra HOB with some scrubbies on the bottom followed by some of that the polyester material and try that out
