  1. Hum wonder when I can get back to Riverfront? I knew I should have bought all the sponge filters. If there any other media to them other than sponge? If not do you need to more frequent w/c to keep the ammonia and other toxins at acceptable levels?
  2. I am getting very close to having to set up a filter system for several small tanks (10-20g). I have absolutely no experience with this type of setup and a looking for options. I have always used hang on style filters and u/g w/power heads for my tanks. These setups would be plant and fry grow out tanks. Obviously my hospital and quarantine tanks will still be stand alone systems. Thank-you in advance I am willing to travel to see some set-ups and how things work
  3. Visited for the sale yesterday. Love getting a discount on filter media, NLS and other equipment. Got some fish too. They are expecting 1 more shipment of fish before their targeted move date at the end of the month.
  4. LOL!!!! It's not like you have enough tanks - you can fit a few more into your place. Who needs a table. They must have loved the fireworks
  5. My ich seems to have almost cleared up but need to do a few more days of gravel vacuuming and w/c. My loach and pleco seem to have handled the heat and salinity okay I did move my apple snails though as they were not happy after the first dose of salt water. My others in the tank are all very hardy and I wasn't too worried about them. Thanks for encouraging me through the natural treatments and sticking with it. i now have my own ich procedure that seems to work for me.
  6. I am only looking ot increase my KH. GH is looking good. Any fish that are more senstive to using baking soda? My list is in my signature. Thank-you everyone for your help.
  7. I have already read that thread and have my own personal feelings on these and other treatments from natural sources. I have a fairly broad knowledge as I have human pharmaceutical and veterinary training. I believe everything has a place and anything is toxic if taken inproperly including water. The Noxich is Malachite and Salt - I used melafix and pima fix previously with my many new additions as I did not have a quarantine tank. Thanks for all the help. Will keep everyone posted. PS- this is a very early ich issue I have a total of 5 spots on the whole tank of fish. I believe in inspecting pets wet, furry, scaly etc everyday to be aware of everything.
  8. I never did use the Noxich. Just salt, cleaning and heat. Should I use the Noxich? I have the desire too but thats the vet med influence. Suggestions ?
  9. Still working on the Ich. Adding 3 tbsp to 33 gallon tank after daily water change - vacuuming gravel as best as I can around the plants. Temp is at 84 and has been for 3 days. I feel like I am not doing enough. I am used to medicating animals and dressing - this in not a cool feeling.
  10. Oh damn!!! I have to get feeders for he snake on the weekend - maybe I can pickup a few things. Too bad I have to shop and for fish. Life Sucks! NOT!!
  11. I think this is why i used crushed oyster shells or Coral in my previous years. Does that make sense?
  12. I have added 1 tbsp per 10 gallons in the loach / pleco tanks (33 gallons) - 1 tbsp per 5 gallons in the betta tank. I did a 50% water change this am and yes I always vacuum the gravel for waste / debri. I am increasing the temp to 86 by 1 or 2 degrees an hour and will continue high temp and salinating with 50% water changes (gravel vacuuming) for 3 days past last spot resolution and will not add such a high amount of salt after that (1 tbsp per 15 gallons). Thoughts on this? PS Betta tank is running 2 filters since can't move white clouds yet.
  13. Also - How do I clean my python ? Obviously I do not have 1 for each tank. I have a simple one for my quarantine and betta tank but use my python for my larger tanks. Would boiling salt water help / work? Should I quarantine new plants that come into my home? How long? Sorry for the questions. I want this to all work for me. Its been years and I was using soft water since living on Vancouver Island. I never had so many issues. Thanks
  14. 2 of the tanks are 33 gallon 1 tank have 4 zebra danio's, 3 balloon mollies, 3 apple snails, a clown loach, and various nuisance snails. Temp is 78 degrees. I have added aquarium salt at about 1 tbsp as I have heard to be careful with live plants. I use the big al's water conditioner, bio clean and stability when I am adding new fish. Should I continue doing the 50% water changes daily on this tank? Add more salt? Other than clown loach showing white spots (assume ick) everyone else seems to be fine - but this tank had the highest loss at 5 fish within 72 hours. Started the W/C when first fish perished. #2 tank has about a total of 15-20 guppies from fry to adult but mainly juvenile, 2 blood parrot cichlids, 2 adult mollies, 2 juvenile mollies, otocinclus, clown loach and nuisance snails. Temp is 76. I have added aquarium salt at about 1 tbsp as I have heard to be careful with live plants. I use the big al's water conditioner, bio clean and stability when I am adding new fish. Should I continue doing the 50% water changes daily on this tank? Add more salt? Other than the 1 molly seeming not right, fins seem a bit clamped and 1 or 2 guppies showing fin damage / rot everyone else including fry are doing well. This tank lost 1 guppy and 1 molly. Again started w/c everyday after first fish. #3 tank is the 5 gallon betta tank with power filter - 1 betta, 2 guppy fry I can't catch and 6 white clouds. The white clouds were to go into the #1 tank but are just staying put at this point. Temp is 73 degrees. I have added aquarium salt at about 1 tsp as I have heard to be careful with live plants. I use the big al's water conditioner, bio clean and stability when I am adding new fish. Should I continue doing the 50% water changes daily on this tank? Add more salt? Other than wound on the bettas back and not minor IMO, everyone else is fine. I will sterilize my nets with active boiling water. I have several large nets which is fine but I will have to get a few more small nets. I do transfer plants occassionally. My hospital / quarintine tank was only set up yesterday so not comfortable putting fish in it yet. I have a few plants in it right now but should I have it a higher salt content and not have plants? treat it differently? pH in all my tanks is between 7-8 Tell me what I am doing wrong and help me fix it. Basically HELP. If I need to modify my routine anything ask I want these tanks to get better and have no problem admitting errors or stupidity. Other than plants I do not have any incoming fish for a week or 2. PS - Fish are fed small amount only want they can eat in 2 minutes. NLS flake, and a few pellets for my cichlids, once a week bloodworm, 1 algae wafer per tank for my bottom feeders as my tanks have zero visible algae.
  15. First I have been doing 50% W/C daily for the last 4 days in case nitrate / nitrite was a problem - bought test kit and I have 0 ppm apparently. I have a clown loach showing signs of ick - but the medication I has says loaches are extremely sensitive to treatment. What do I do? In separate tank - Betta has wound on back - not sure how it happened - treating with melafix / pima fix but still not improving. In yet another separate tank - guppies and mollies showing signs of stress possible fin / tail rot and possible fin clamp (molly) Don't know if it is related but all started when I started feeding NLS. I lost in 1 tank my otocinclus and angel's, Other tank a Molly and a guppy and betta tank lost an apple snail. All tanks have been tested and other than the KH being low tests show no build up, pH issues etc. Live plants in all tanks. Betta tank is cold water tank. I have never used anything other than Pimafix, Melafix and Nox ich Please help.
  16. I want to know what I need to do to increas the KH in my tanks. It is too low for optimal pH stabilization and all other parameters in the tanks are stable - including pH. Thanks
  17. I found this on kijiji this morning 2 tanks for $400 that hold 5 betta's all separate and non visible to eack other http://calgary.kijiji.ca/c-pets-accessorie...QAdIdZ147863112 Hope that helps someone - even for pictures

  19. Ok so I am one of those OCD people that like to know all the little details before starting anything and am therefore asking the pro' for advice. My Mollies and Guppies and ready to pop with the next bath of fry and I want to try the brine shrimp route. I have attached a picture of the hatchery I was given (Thank-you Geoff) What do I need, best salt to use, collecting the brine shrimp etc. Thanks in Advance
  20. I was at the 32nd Ave site on Sunday and today. Got great deals both times. I still got nets, 36" bulbs for my tanks, airstones, aquarium salt, plant gro etc when I was there today. But yes not much left.
  21. I am going to have to catch him and put him in a different tank to get a picture as none of the pics I've taken have turned out. My camera can take awesome pictures through a microscope lens but not of a fish in a tank. Weird LOL. I'll keep you all posted.
  22. I do have live plants and he came to me this way. Anything else I can use ?
  23. I can't tell if this boy has fin stuck together or what but definately does not look right. I just got him from a private home on Sat as well as some Females and 2 other males. Noone else has any issues. What could it be? Should I treat them with anything? I am hesitant to put anything else in the tank just in case help. And I do not remember all my fish ailments but sure will be in my books quickly - just prefer to ask the experienced hobbyists first. Jordanne I'll get a Picture if I can
  24. Thanks I did read about them living in filthy, murky water in the wild. Just wanted to make sure in an aquarium if they required anythinn different. Jordanne
  25. Hi Everyone I am returning to a favorite hobby after taking some time off for starting my family. My previous experience has been exclusively freshwater completely planted aquariums ranging from 10-30 G and a 33G Oscar tank. I just finished cycling 2 30G tanks and planted with Java Moss, Sessiflora and Riccia. Still looking for a few more stem plants and well as added a few pieces of driftwood. I am looking for any words of wisdom as I embark on this journey again. I currently have some Guppies from a private home, Zebra Danios and 2 Dwarf Gourami's. The Dwarf Gourami's are new to me and hoping I serve them well. Thanks Jordanne NE Calgary
