  1. The previous posts are exactly right. i have bought many of the Beamworks LED fixtures on E-bay and have had to replace some of the power adapters after a couple years. Sometimes the lights will start to flicker as well which is a sign. Now I keep at least one extra adapter on hand. They cost about $10 each.
  2. Jason I have a bag of them as well. There was bag of fish from the same person that I bought because they were being sold as blue dolphins. but when the runner came with bag it was quite apparent that they were not blue dolphins. Didn't have the body shape or the colour. So not sure what we got with the german red shoulders.......interesting.
  3. Have you not seen Finding Nemo? I caught some of my fish conspiring to plan a breakout just last week.
  4. Unfortunately I am going to miss it for the first time in 3 years.....off to Palm Springs for a week of golfing....ah well there will be another auction in May....
  5. I have 1 BN pleco in each of my breeding tanks and fry tanks and it has reduced my algae clening to nearly zero and the plecos are doing fine. I was kicking myself for not doing it earlier. I have never had one die and the peacocks don't bother them one bit either.
  6. Like Raymond said , with the peacocks (auloncara)the females are dimorphic , so they don't have the colour like the males. So if you want to just have colourful fish tank with no breeding you want to get males. If you are just setting up a tank and want it colourful there are plenty of different types of peacocks around and you could likely get over 10 different types in Calgary. Check with Harold (Fairdeal) and he could stock you up pretty well for a decent price. I would get them all at once , about the same size, and in a few months it would be an explosion of colour. Here is the link to a site that shows pictures of the different types http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/category.php?cat=3 Have fun.....
  7. Since I was running out of room for more fry I got this black matting type stuff from Randy at Aqarium Illusions (his suggestion) and put a piece of it in the bottom of my tank. You have to weight it down, The weave is very course and the fry hide in it, so you can have it in the same tank with the males. I checked today and there are 6 and they look fine. If you want to get all the fry , separating is for sure the answer, but this would work too. If you covered the whole bottom of the tank I am sure you would get almost all the fry. I also use NLS Grow only and no problems.
  8. Why put makeup on the pig? You would be further ahead to build a proper stand and have the peace of mind knowing it won't collapse. I estimate you would need about 5- 8' 2x4's , a couple 8' 2x2's , 4'x4' piece of plywood, some glue and about 30 3" screws.
  9. I built a stand that holds 5 tanks. 3 -30 gallon on top and 2 -20 gallon on the botton. It cost me about $50 in material. Plus I wired it so I can turn off the heaters with one switch (water changes) and all the lights with another switch. I have it in my furnace room and it is quite compact. You could do some preassembly , but the final assembly would need to be done on site. 2 x 4's glus and 3" screws , plus some 1/2 or 5/8 plywood.
  10. Exactly! With a few 2x4's , some carpenters glue and some 3 " screws you can build a stand very quickly and very strong. I have the tools if you need help. It's the dressing up that adds to the cost. But if you keep it simple the cost is really low.
  11. I have a 90 gal tank and I am working towards getting it full of male peacocks. I have been breeding some types to get there and also bought some males of a few types as I don't have space to breed that many. I have 50 gal with male peacocks as well. If you need some to populate your tank let me know as I have quite a few extras, and not expensive. I use a Fluval 405 on the 90 and a 305 on the 50 plus I have 5 more in use and have not had any problems with them. Some people don't like them and I guess they have their reasons but I'm ok with them. BTW my 90 is the easiest tank to care for and cichlids are quite hearty and durable. The odd time you may get some carnage but you can limit that by having enough of them and different types. Make sure you decide what types you want before you go buy as that is easier than regretting it later.
  12. I am closing in on the goal. Currently have 13 different male peacocks in my 90 gal display tank . Eureka red, neon chiwindi, dragon's blood, german red, yellow regal, blue regal, red top lwanda, o.b. , lemon, bicolour 500, masoni, red shoulder and new today ngara flametail. They aren't all full grown yet so they haven't all coloured up , but when they do I expect it to be a colour bonanza. I will have to get my daughter to take some more pictures to post on my tumbler site. Stay tuned.....
  13. I was at BA's on Wed and they had quite a bit of lace rock and the peices were pretty good sizes .
  14. I add one cap of prime for every 4 pails right from the tap. I check the temperature by feel. I do 20-25% every 2 weeks. Never have problems. I also use a large rubbermaid container that holds 4 pails , and then either pump the water into the tanks or use gravity. My large tank is beside some stairs so I put the tub on the landing and siphon. It's fast!! You can buy small water pumps at Aqua Giant for reasonable prices and they work really well. 1-2 gallons / minute is fine.
