  1. Just wondering if anyone has come across a place in Calgary selling ATI Aquablue and ATI Blue + florescent T5 bulbs? From my research today its looking like these are the heavy favorites at the moment and I would like to get ahold of some. Any suggestions?...Only checked Big Als so far and didn't find any.
  2. I ended up picking up another Hagen Glo double light strip from Wai's on 16th. I put 2 Giesseman Actinic + bulbs in today instead of sticking with the Hagen bulbs. Now I'm thinking that my 2 life-glo's are more for plants so I'm prob gonna shop for some new whites.
  3. Makes sense considering my tests were off the charts at first.....thanks man
  4. Hey there.....I'm currently cycling my tank and my ammonia and nitrites finally went to 0ppm but my nitrates are still insanely high. They were off the charts (>50ppm) so I did a major water change today (about 60%) and then I tested again. MY nitrates are still up around 60-80ppm and I'm wondering what is up. Most of the literature I read on cycling said that after ammonia and nitrites are at zero then after a large PWC my tank should be ready to stock. How should I reduce these nitrates so I can get this show on the road? Cheers
  5. Hey Guys My cycle is basically finished (reading 0 ppm for amm & nitri) and I just waiting for my replacement water to age so I can do a major water change and get this show on the road. I recently purchased some lights from petandsponds.com and I ended up going with 2x36" Hagen GLO T5HOs.....I got 2x6700K bulbs with the order but I'm starting to think that I should have gotten at least 1 actinic bulb instead. My tank has been cycling (and in the dark for 3 weeks) so I haven't done much research on lighting and I'm wondering what you've all gotten your best results with? I've only got T5's so please no MH talk....basically I'm wonding if my light supply is sufficient (2x 36" Hagen Life-glo 6700K) even though I only have 2 bulbs going without actinics. SHould I mix my lightbar with 1 white-light and 1 actinic and go 12hrs on/12 off...........or should I save up for another 2-bulb lightbar go 12 hrs white light on one and 12 hrs actinic on the other. Please let me know what you think
  6. Just cycling my new tank. I read up on fishless cycling using ammonia and I've been using it to build up bacteria colonies. My nitrites just dropped to 0 so after a PWC I should be good to go........that's weird that the link didn't work....I've tested it on a few computers and it is still live...if it works for anyone else then please let me know because I just signed up for this site (tumblr) specifically to post aquarium pics.
  7. I've been noticing these strange looking polyps growing and multiplying on one of my top rocks. This is one of the rocks I got from an established tank so it could be anything. Whateber these polyps are they are definately hardy because I'm currently cycling and I have been dosing the tank with lots of ammonia. I will try and post a pic or a link so please let me know what you think these are. http://johnnyreeftank.tumblr.com/ Cheers
  8. Hey guys I'm just finishing up my first cycle on my new tank and I've already mixed enough water to do a 50-60% water change for tomorrow. I used regular tap water and I live in Calgary and I was wondering whether anyone has ever done an analysis on the Calgary water supply to see if it contains any dangerous trace elements. Does anyone else consistantly use Calgary tap water for their tanks or do I have something to worry about down the road?
  9. Thanks for the advice....I managed to trap the Xanthid and boot him out of the tank, so I've got the biggest problem sorted. I think I will try that pvc trap for a few of the giant bristles so thanks for that. I've only got 3 small aiptasia growths so I think I may try the boiling water in a turkey baster.....anyone tried this? Oh and I was also wondering whether a peppermint shrimp would survive after the aiptasia is depleted....or do you guys all have refugiums? Please let me know cuz this seems like the best option.
  10. Sweet...thanks for the heads up. My lights came with a couple of 6700k LIFEGLO bulbs but no actinics. Is it nessessary to stagger the lights (12hrs of whites and 12hrs of actinics) for optimum coral growth? Or should I have them mixed (white and actinics together) for 12 hrs and then have darkness for the other 12? Please let me know what you think
  11. Ya...still cycling so I have been messing around with my tank alot and its possible thats its the crap off of my hands. I'll try and upload a pic here...oops guess pics dont seem to work....error406....whatever that is....anyways I'll try a few different methods and see how it goes
  12. I recently picked up about 60 lbs of live rock for my new tank and most of it came from an established tank off of kijiji. I had a barrel setup with saltwater in it and i swished every rock to dislodge any unwanted hitchhickers but some of those lilbasterds managed to hangon.... but I got a few good ones too so I guess I cant complain. I've got Aipstasia in 2 places, a various assortment of orange and red bristleworms ranging from 1-6", 3 blue hermit crabs, an unknown number of sandsifter starfish, a bunch of white inchworms living in my 'dead sand' and a big @$$ crab that I think is a xanthid. Could you all provide some removal tactics for all of these (except the hermits)..........oh and will having this much of a bioload (including a significant amount of coraline) affect my cycle in anyway?
  13. I'm cycling my 35g with live rock, argonite and a protein skimmer and after 2 weeks I'm noticing a film on top of the water. The research I've done has led me to suspect that its a protein sheen that has evaded the water column of the protein skimmer. My LFS said to use a fine mesh net or some paper towel to soak it up....this works temporarily but I don't want to have to do this constantly. A few different sites aid to point my powerheads at the surface to agitate it...all that does is swish it around but its still quite evident. Another site said to get a surface skimmer but it seems pretty large and ugly in a small 35g tank. Has anyone out there discovered a foolproof way of getting rid of this??? I've looked up DIY surface skimmers but haven't found one that is small and effective. Please help!
  14. I'm currently new to the hobby and cycling a 35 gallon with 60 lbs live rock, 45lbs argonite and a remora skimmer. I've got 2x36" GLO T5HO's and I want to get a crazy glow in the dark tank going once my cycle is complete. I haven't done much research on the matter yet but I've noticed a decent number of corals and anemones at my LFS have some sort of photo-luminessence that would make them glow in the dark and I wasn't sure if there was a certain trick involved in keeping them. Do these specimens need actinic bulbs? Or do these lights just accentuate whats already glowing? What species would you all recommend for sweet glow in the dark tank? Cheers
