  1. Nimbochromis venestus should be available at most "cichlid friendly" pet stores from time to time. Keep in mind that this is a fish that grows to 10", and can be quite "spirited". Aulonocara baenschi is a very pretty fish, but a bit of a wimp. It wouldn't make a good tank mate for Nimbochromis venestus. Your better off choosing the similar Aulonocara sp. stuartgranti Maleri from Maleri Island.
  2. The last one is actually a male Julidochromis regani from Nsumbu Bay. Very nice location variant. degrassi - those broken links come from my previous post (where they aren't broken).
  3. I've always kept my cichlids in with plants. None of the types of cichlids I've kept over the years have caused any problems to the plants. Plants that I typically keep -> Aponogeton crispus, Aponotgeton undulatus, Anubias nana var., Anubias hastifolia, Anubias barteri, Cryptocorne balansae, Cryptocorne wendtii, Cryptocorne willissi, Cryptocoryne aponogetifolia, Cryptocoryne parva, Brazilian Swords, Giant Vallisneria, Hygro, Dwarf "Swords", Java fern and a few others I've probably forgotten. The keys seem to be actually having enough plants. One or two plants are a curiousity, a fully planted tank seems to be fine. Here are some pictures, and then some links (to save the dialup folks), http://www.plecos.net/gallery/albums/userp...venestus-23.jpg http://www.plecos.net/gallery/albums/userp...0male%201sm.jpg http://www.plecos.net/gallery/albums/userp...%20male%201.jpg http://www.plecos.net/gallery/albums/userp...0female%201.jpg http://www.plecos.net/gallery/albums/userp...al_baenschi.jpg
  4. Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos (maingano) and Pseudotropheus saulosi seem to get along quite fine. They would be a good mix in your aquarium. I have to agree on the other comments regarding the crabro, though personally it is one of the few fish that I really don't like at all. These regularly grow to 8", and I've seen 10". The males when full grown are a brown colouration, and tend to get misproportioned. In my opinion, they are the least attractive Malawi cichlid when full grown. With their size, and disposition, I don't think they make good fish for a 65 gallon.
  5. IMO - Fish #3 and #4 are not likely to be pure fryeri. Sammy, very nice Iceberg there.
  6. Any Big Al's can easily get Distichodus sexfasciatus or fasciolatus in. They can get very large though.
  7. I've seen that before, though it is pretty rare. Just a weird genetic anomaly.
  8. Darcy informed me of this, and thanks for the heads up. If you ever see anything you take exception to at C-F.com in articles.. whatever, feel free to send me a PM, email whatever... As far as those not being johanni... well who really knows. They don't look like what johanni should look like, but there are so many terribly bred johanni, that they could be johanni. Still, they aren't representative of what they should look like, so they'll be changed. As far as all these "interruptus" on the market, colour me sceptical. I don't think that there has been enough of these kept to be as popular as the numbers show. Honestly, It think half of these fish we ID as such, are poorly bred johanni, or potential hybrids....
  9. Have you tried AZOO? Seriously, mine took to NLS right away.
