Newbie (1/14)

  1. I have Cardinal tetra, Dwarf neon rainbows, Ember tetra, Harlequin rasboras, and Green tiger barbs in my large community tank which brings a lot of color to the tank. You could get Celestial Pearl Danios but they are very shy and will try to hide on the bottom behind plant and ornaments.
  2. I have made a few lids. I go to Rally Glass in Edmonton. They cut the glass right to size to fit your needs. Very cheap. 5149-129 ave (780) 476-1978
  3. I did the same thing with my 72 gallon bow front about 2 ½ years ago. But I mixed laterite in with my gravel. I set up a 10 gallon to house the fish temporary. I kept 35 gallons from the aquarium for later. The canister sat for 1.5 hours without power. I was a newbie at the time and now I would have filled a large plastic garbage can with the aquarium water and hooked the filter to it with an air stone and heater. After mixing in the laterite in the gravel I put the 35 gallons of used water back into the tank which has lost about 10 deg cooler. Added fresh treated water at a much warmer temperature to composite for the cold water to bring the temperature back to 78 deg or what is needed for your fish. Now I would have used the water from the large garbage can housing the filter because it would be at the right temperature and well oxygenated. Then I reinstalled the canister filter. I ran the bubblers for a day or 2 before setting up my C02. Total time was 2 ½ hours.
  4. I have and still use Weather Shield Silicone. It also states on the tube that it is safe for aquariums. I have had no problems with it. Only thing is that I have only seen it in Home Hardware stores. Living in Calgary It looks like the closest Home Hardware is in Airdrie.
  5. I have the Eheim ultra G160 canister and I use micro cloth (100 microns) on top so I clean the filter once a month.
  6. I won a spot in the 2012 Service Credit Union Calendar July for this pic I took in Jasper.
  7. It does look amazing. If I am fortunate to have another bloom maybe the petals will open more to get a peek inside.
  8. Thanks Geophagus. Yes I am going to cut the flower stock off at the base. I just talked to a lady who owns a hydroponic store here in Edmonton and she said cut it at the base of the plant because it won’t bloom from the same stem a second time. If conditions are good it might shoot up several stem and continue blooming for a month with each bloom lasting 3 to 5 days. Funny thing, the first thing she asked me was did you smell the flower.
  9. I did get a faint smell but not enough. After the bloom was done did you prune it above the water?
  10. I did have 2 green clams in the 180 (3 and 4 inches) but I found out later that the there wasn't enough nutrients, food particles in the water for two clams and the smaller one starved to death. About 8 month ago the larger one buried deep in the substrate and never came back up. I think it was because of my auto water change system (roughly 60 gallons a week) left max Nitrates 2.5 ppm. The plants were consuming everything else as well as their ferts leaving nothing for the clam. If the water nitrates were around 7 to 10 ppm and a little extra food waste he would have survived.
  11. Actually this is my first experience having a plant bloom. Lack of experience I was more confused because I didn't understand why I had this stem from the middle of the plant shooting straight up with a small head on it. Two days later the had bloomed. I was amazed vwith the results and didn't even think of smelling the flower. It might be too late now but after work I will see if there is any sent left to enjoy. If I am fortunate to have another bloom I will be ready and set up my camera for elasped time and make a video of the pics. Now that the plant has bloomed will it bloom again or was this a one time event?
  12. This is a green clam about 4 inches. He usually buried in the substrate but comes out once and a while. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRXwUlzzdwQ&list=UUZyQlO8HLuKZ9v_P2TCO9xw
  13. I was told that having a lotus plant bloom was very rare. So I must share it with you. Sorry but the pcs were taken with my phone
  14. Thank god water is cheap. The supplier said the filter would last a year for normal house hold use, drinking and so on. We calculated that I would use around 2/3 of the water. After 12 months I checked the chlorine every week. After 15 months there was no chlorine but I decided it was time to change the filter. Better safe than sorry. The filter cost around $28.00.
