  1. I have seen various videos on the YouTubes on how people feed their Cardinal (small) tetras. I have been using NLS 0.5mm pellets, and I think they have been eating it, but I have not really observed it. Does anyone have a great food / feeding system they love? Thanks Friends Andrew
  2. Have you tested the well water with something like an API freshwater test kit? Secondly I recommend watching this video.
  3. Here are my results: Traded in 2 identical (complete and functional) used Aqueon 55 HOBs (rated at 300gph, for up to 90G volume) - Petland on 130th gave me a AC110. The manager showed me their conversion chart and followed it correctly. I was thankful and surprised. - Petland in Shawnessy gave my wife (she has her own Petland #) a AC50. When she came home with that I promptly returned it and asked to see a manager. The guy showed me the conversion chart but decided to use his own discretion and bump me up to a AC70, but not the 110. Conclusion: I am thankful and elated now that I have two brand new AC HOB's but as per my continuing experience with Petland Shawnessy, they dont make any sense to me, I dislike shopping there, but I am thankful for this promo/exchange. Thanks again FatPuffer for bringing this to my attention.
  4. I honestly cant believe that PL would do a promo like this. I am digging up a old filter for sure! Thanks for the heads up Mr.FatPuffer:-)
  5. I have read or watched (cant remember source) that the white gutters reflect a comparable amount of light? Not sure if thats legit or not. I would buy Aluminum Tape (HVAC guys use it on ducting) and it will just stick on and is pure aluminum! Super cheap and easy available at any hardware store. I really like the method I posted because you have less junctions, and can potentially utilize the whole strip. When I did my searching for LED strips, it was difficult finding ones with pure white LEDs. What strip lights are you using? URL?
  6. Joeys video is awesome. Here is another one that I think improves on what Joey did, and is a better design! Hopefully this post advances the video to the salient content at the 3 minute mark https://youtu.be/VgyWu_jP7AQ?t=3m8s
  7. I have 3 BLP in my 120 all three are dark with the silver tip tails. I saw a huge group of eggs in my driftwood, took the driftwood out into my QT tank and they all hatched nicely. To my surprise, I have about 50% albino, and 50% are nice and dark with the same presentation as mom and dad. I find that weird because my grossly oversimplified Mendelian gene square says that even if mom and dad are heterozygous for the recessive albino gene I should not get 50% albino!?! Anybody else have an experience like this? Thanks :-)
  8. I too question the resolution of these colorimetric assays. I think they are valuable and I use them, but delineating ammonia concentration @ 0.25 ppm is not realistic considering observer error and their inherent limitations. I like the idea of a more macro approach, dosing 2.0ppm and observing major drops in a 24 hour period. Then you know your bacteria are rocking! I did it on my 120 this summer and it was a beauty.
  9. I bought 16 unsexed juveniles and I ended up with 1 female! I bought one more female, and am always looking for more ;-) I guess those are some bad or good odds depending on your perspective.
  10. I keep seeing this interesting behavior from my M. boesemani, and finally caught a little bit of it on video. I first noticed the different coloration where the dorsal region of the head turns a pale white, and then they start doing the head to head swimming thing. Its fascinating to watch. Does anybody have an idea whats happening, or specifics? My intuition is they are jockeying and competing for the ladies, but maybe more to it? Thanks
  11. Welcome! I started out with Mollies too, but I contracted a disease, and now (according to my wife) I have too many tanks.
  12. Sorry I'm not very funny, I guess that's why I'm biological sciences. Normally I source all my research materials from chemical supply companies like Sigma-Aldrich, but since I needed dirt, I didn't go to them. For some strange reason they dont supply dirt. (That was another joke) ;-)
  13. I second Iceturf. For my research this summer I could not source dirt from Sigma-Aldrich, or any of my typical suppliers (jk) so I went to Canadian Tire. You can get 4 Cubic feet for ~20$ in a nice big bag!
  14. The wonderful world of science has spoken. An extensive review of the herichthyin clade of Middle American cichlids has resulted in the naming of eight new genera and a number of taxonomic modifications. http://www.seriouslyfish.com/major-changes-in-new-world-cichlid-taxonomy/ A friend of mine said "Well... Its time to burn all my Cichlid books" which made me laugh. I'm sure the pictures are still good
  15. Thanks Curtis, thats some solid know-how right there! Talk to you soon ;-)
  16. I think I wrote that wrong. This is for cycled 26 Gallon tank, with a Fluval 205 Canister. Fake plants and inert substrate, so i'm wondering about the futility of those guys with the pH staying steady at ~8.3?
  17. Alrighty, what about a simple tank without live plants and CO2 injection?
  18. A member of my family really wants to have a school of Cardinal Tetras in their 26G. I'm nervous because my tap water is 8.3pH (Calgary Glenmore Reservoir) every single time I have tested it. To this point I have only kept species that thrive in hard alkaline water. I'm not interested in altering water chemistry at all, or in RO. Is it futile keeping these guys in Calgary tap water? Thank You
  19. Thanks for your detailed help! Hopefully this helps out other members as well. Its up and running and im a happy camper
  20. Thanks for the reply. Would you please check this exploded parts list diagram and let me know which piece that is? http://www.eheimparts.com/display_product.php?pid=2073
  21. Have mercy on me with this new filter. I got this used 2073 and previous owner said it works awesome. I have never had an Eheim before, and I cannot get this SOB to prime and start pumping water. Things I have done... - I re-did ALL the hose connections, cut small portions of hose off and made tight strong connections. - No water leaking, and cant see any place where air is entering the system - Motor head off, inspected and reinstalled impeller and shaft. Looks fine. - I watched every single YouTube video on how to set up correctly. - Pumped that primer button about 1000 times and even yelled "FU$K" as loud as I can to encourage it. - I have had, and still have many Fluval canisters that have never had this issue. I posted a video on YouTube so you can see what I have done, and the sounds its making. https://youtu.be/yix1SMkJbok Thanks for any help, advice you can give me.
  22. 400$ sounds about right! The Brazilian government banned export because they realized the species are threatened and they are not prolific breeders. Now the laws of supply and demand kick in, and lets just say that supply is REALLY low ;-)
