  1. Welcome, In Calgary all the Petsmarts have Hornwort but last time I got some it was full of ramsorn snails and cherry shrimp lol.
  2. maybe a 1-2mm bigger than a neon tetra. they will eat your baby shrimp if you mix them. I put my shrimp culls in with my tetras and they keep the population in check
  3. Welcome to AA Protato, id go with cardinal tetras as ive never kept Rasboras. My cardinals never hide and even challenge my plecos for an algae wafer.
  4. Heres another one http://www.kijiji.ca/v-fish/calgary/arapaima-giga/1253015160?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
  5. tried last night, no luck she sleeps in the most hideiest spot in the tank. I can catch any other fish with a lazer pointer and net but she has no interest. Bah ill go get the buckets.
  6. I finally have a female that has been holding for 2 weeks..... now to catch her, Any super tactical sneeky tricks to this? or just remove all the rock
  7. +1 for Hornwort, keeps nitrates low fish love to play in it. I have never had an algae problem. also have a 18" planter box with a pump and pothos on top of tank. If you tank is stocked with Cichlids they will just eat any smaller floating plants duckweed/water lettuce, I grow it on my pleco tank just to feed to the cichlids
  8. Oh dear What could this be.......smells like fish

  10. Might as well just get a Pike and some red LED's...... way cheaper!
  11. I forgot my password and did a password reset. Entered my new password and am instantly logged in, after a few hrs it auto logs me out and my password wont work. I have to keep doing a password reset and changing it every time I log in..... Has anyone else had this issue? or know a solution.......
  12. Petland usually has a good selection around $12 a piece. sometimes they have cholla wood in too
  13. Nice, the long tank is interesting, be a good river tank.
  14. Hello and welcome. Clown loach +1 A few pix would be awesome
  15. Already on there, kijiji is pretty empty right now ugh. where do you buy your salt?
  16. Hello, I am wanting to give saltwater a try. Just wondering if there is anyone on here with SW tanks that may have some things I'm looking for. Plans are 30-40G with 15G sump. In no rush to add a bunch of living things but would like to get something full of water and cycling for months first. I will be upgrading my current 15G pleco/tetra tank to a 30G very soon and will then have the old 15G to use as a sump. I'm huge on DIY and doing things for as cheap as possible without hot glue and duct tape Some current general info on SW would be great. cheapest salt, best dry rock, I will want to seed the tank with Coralline algea/Copepods/Chaetomorpha in sump if anyone has this stuff in there tank. Thanks
  17. Tested mine today still 0ppm South Calgary. Better test it again room temp water. 50ppm seems high for tap water
  18. Again I'm no expert with the platys, 10ppm nitrates is a lot better. I'm not assuming Ich as it usually shows as small white dots and effects more than 1 fish. The most readily available source of malachite green is in Ich meds, usually the main ingredient. Malachite alone will not harm shrimp or fry but some general Ich meds contain sodium chloride that will harm inverts. If only 1 fish has an issue a few soaks and monitoring her wont harm. Its good to have some general Ich meds on hand anyway.
  19. Hey Terri, I'm no expert with platys but 20ppm nitrate is pretty high. I would do a 75% water change add warm water back not to shock the fish and get some Ich meds that contain malachite green. if you only suspect 1 fish you can do a 15min soak per day with the 1 fish. but if you start seeing things on the other fish you may have to medicate the whole tank. The malachite will help heal the fish if it is just a scratch.
  20. Great response Andrew! I have heard lots of stories about fish of the same species fighting to the death as a survival of the fittest mentality but to see one that is not even that big hunt and consume a baby of different species was very alarming. Big blue & black tail on one end and a small yellow one on the other! I will remove any caves I have with only 1 entry as I think he cornered and killed the little lab who was fast as a bullet. And yes the fancy yellow labs from Dwayne look very tasty (at least my cat thinks so) My juvie Demasoni came from you btw, They are growing up quite nicely. Thanks
  21. When I came to feed my fish this morning my second largest Demasoni male went into one of the caves and came out with a yellow tail hanging out of his mouth! He did indeed corner and consume my smallest Labidochromis(yellow lab) I bought a group of 15 from @punman a few weeks ago in the 3/4"-1" size. He threw in 1 extra very small fry incase 1 died. I kept them in a breeder net for a few weeks to feed them without competition from my other fish. They were added to my main tank 4dys ago. So my questions are why are my herbivorous Mbuna hunting small fish? am I under feeding? Could my Demasoni become sick from eating small fish? Now that he has a taste for fish will he kill again? Any comments or help with this are appreciated Thank You
  22. He croaked today . I wish SKA would get some more in I hate buying them from Pisces. There just to finicky to be dumped into bare tanks. But I finally convinced the staff to keep almond leaves in there otto tanks!
  23. The 8 degree drop does slow them down a lot and my pleco rides the heater for hrs till the tank warms up again. As for heating my water before I add. bypass the water softener and wreck my appliances, get a 45G container/bubbler/pump to age my water in, or some sort of inline on demand heater...... or I just boil the kettle 15 times and add hot while I add the cold. No matter how I do it it will be a pain in the arse or I may just keep doin what I have been as I haven't seen any long term effects so far. Thanks for the input guys/gals
  24. Heres a bunch of pix from my 4 tanks. hope you can figure out the order.
