  1. I just wanted to share my new LED setup for the 4 gallon pico reef tank. I was using two GU10 1x3w cool white + 2x3w actinic for a couple of years and wanted to try something different. I ordered a 10w Chip on Board LED module, thermal epoxied it to a little heat sink, drilled some holes for wires and siliconed a glass guard for the actual LED. I'm really liking the nice white look. We'll see how the coral and shrimp like the new light. It is much less spot lighty than the GU10 bulbs. This is the old LED New 10W unit And running on the tank And FTS. Apparently I need to do a water change :P I think I might see if I can run two units w/o the actinic on my planted 10G.
  2. I was walking through HomeDepot today and spied a 4 foot T8 Linear LED drop in tube. 32W I think, 5000K. Not the same output as T5HO, but it certainly was an unexpected discovery. I, since, read that some of these linears can be used with a quick start - and some require the ballast be bypassed.
  3. I decided to go the LED route and after some research, Finnex was the way to go. Especially for the price, the PAR, and the looks. One of the reps is also quite active on plantedtank.net quite a bit, which is great to see from a consumer point of view. I also liked that they carry a 30" model. If you have a 29 gallon, you know that 30" is an oddball size in the world of lighting. My 29 gallon is 18" high, so this should give me low to low-medium light. Seeing how I'm not running CO2 or on a mad fert dosing regime and have mostly anubias, java fern, hygrophilia polysperma, and crypts...it should be adequate to promote growth. Once I have it set up for a couple of weeks I'll report back on my thoughts. All I can say for now is that it was extrememly easy to order (there's a canadian distributor now) and it arrived in 4 business days.
  4. Hi all, Just thought I would show a couple pictures of my solution for lighting the full area of the Fluval Edge 6g. My first thought was to upgrade the original light (which has been done) but that doesn't solve the problem of lighting the edges (ironic given the name of the tank). So here is my solution! This light bar is bonded pieces of Aluminum acting as a heat sink for high power LEDs, the bar should be giving out between 750 - 850 lumens additonal light to where it is needed most in this type of tank. These are the highest power LEDs I could source to fit inside this type of heat sink, they are capped, bonded and soldered into the frame. I'll be monitoring the tanks temperatures closely as I have a good handle on what they are without the extra light bar. On first impressions the whites of my CRS really pop out making them standout in lot of plant life. The edges of the tank are fully illuminated and I'll be keeping an eye on the plant growth! If anyone is interested I am considering making a lower profile version (depending on the temps) so PM if you think you might like one, I bought all the tools and seems a shame only to build one with all the gear.
  5. just a quick question, if I put led lights on my tank, could I do it with just a kitchen fixture, or are there spectrums in the leds as well?
