  1. In the past my fish have occasionally spawned in the tank and I enjoyed the show but had no interest/time to take on breeding as a hobby. I now have more tanks and am interested to make a more direct effort to breed the fish I keep. Mostly for the challenge and to observe their behavior. If it subsidizes the hobby a bit that would be a bonus. Searching for resources online or books at amazon there is tons of information on how to get species X to breed but I haven't found much on breeding in general. How to select breeding stock, breeding with wild caught specimens vs captive raised, do's/don'ts of hybrids, inbreeding, line breeding, culling, how to maintain live food cultures to feed breeders and fry, use of medications to prevent fungus, etc. Amazon has a bunch of books aimed at breeding of tropical fish but they are all for the Chinese market. Can you guys recommend a place to start reading up on "best practices" to generate high quality offspring. I am not interested in hybrids or line breeding of special traits, just healthy fish that are as close to their wild ancestors as possible.
  2. Yesterday I bought a male and female krib, and almost immediately upon acclimation and putting them in my tank they started to exhibit spawning behaviour. They were all over the tank, the female displaying her very purple belly, and the male was following her everywhere doing a shimmy for her, his throat and underside turning Crimson. They were not aggressive towards my corys, but made sure they stayed away from the entrance of the log they claimed. Going in and out several times. This morning I seen her for about 30 seconds, and I seen him poke his head out the back of the log. They seem very cautious and a bit defensive. So are they just being coy this morning or are they in that log getting down to business? I have successfully kept kribs before but only males, never had the opportunity to get a female where we were living. I have a 26 gallon bow front, with an LED, running two HOB filters (cycling one for my sons tank). Temp is at 78-79F, water is a bit softer than town water, we have a softener. ph is around 7.3 She likes flakes, he eats anything. Offered them sinking pellets, flakes and shrimp.
  3. So I am looking at setting up a Cory tank but for multiple species. Is a 90g divided into 4 compartments, with each having a spray bar across the top and Porte foam filter on the drain a good setup with an FX5/6 and an inline Heater a good way to go? The risks are that all four tanks are hooked up to one central filter and diseases could become common. Spawning mops? What's the best material and what's the best conditioning food? I have access to live, frozen and freeze dried. Beef heart a good supplement as I have discus as well. I am liking at the following cories to start: Duplicareus, Adolfi, similis, sterbia, weitzmani in tank 1 and tank 2 green lasers, reynoldsi, schwartzi, and CW51 - 10 of each in each compartment. Please post all your thoughts as I am in the design process and have mainly adults with the duplicareus being the only juvies. Can I also keep Apistos in the same tanks? Or should I put it as has anyone ever had success in breeding apistos along side cories in the same tanks? (Cacautoides, viejeta, agassizi, blue German rams) I have soft water (Kinetico system with RO if needed) with a pH of 7.8 (Calgary) and I can take that down lower if needed. Most of my cories at home are at 82F and 6.5 with discus. Not ideal for some but they sure like the beef heart and bloodworm diets!
  4. I am breeding cyprichromis. And would love suggestions on the best tank set up. Individual tanks. Or a tank split in 3 parts . I would ultimately like one tank divided in 3 parts that would be ideal. But I'm unsure how to do this. The 3 sections must not be able to have fry move from one to another.
  5. Dear AA, I need your help! The last few days I've been noticing my potential Angelfish pair keeping all the other fish away from the middle section of my tank. Today I look and I find eggs on a clay pot!! Sorry for the head tilt to see the pics right side up. Here's the eggs: And the parents: Since this is my first time breeding... (and by COMPLETE accident)..what are your suggestions for making sure everything is safe for babies and other habitants :well:
  6. A couple of days ago, I went out and purchased a pair of apistos. So far, they seem to be adapting really well to their new home. I was just taking a moment to observe them and noticed the female getting quite territorial with the convict cichlids I have (about 2 months old; they and the apisto are similar size). There seems to be a couple of spots where she had been particularly keen on chasing off the convicts. After seeing that, I figured she might be ready to breed! Shortly after watching them some more, I noticed the male apisto chasing the female around. It seems way more playful than when the female would go after the convicts. Is that another potential sign of breeding? Thank you and Merry Christmas!
  7. Does any one knows good reputable Discus Breeders in Calgary and areas close to Calgary?
  8. I was recently given a pair of Honey Gourami's for my fresh water tank and I was wondering what is the trick to breeding them? I am failry sure one is a male and one is a female because of the colour indications I have been told about. I saw a hint of a bubble nest in a corner in my community tank but ti dissapeared now. Tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  9. I'm surprised, I bought 8 of these off Rick 3 males in the big community tank and 4 females and 1 male in the other they didnt grow as fast but there kicking out eggs ,I would of thought they'd have to get bigger first. The Flag fish are kicking out eggs and so are the Congos .
  10. Hello members of the Alberta Aquatica, Here is a link to a live feed to the tank. http://justin.tv/mahawka I am fairly new to this forum so please forgive me if I violate any rules. I am working on mating two of my betta fish. The male is a double tail blue/ mustards gas, and the female is a purple/ red plakat. I am using a 10 gallon tank that is about half full. The water temperature is at 83 degrees. I have found that that temperature works the best for me. A Styrofoam cup that has been cut in half is used for a place for the male to blow a bubble nest. Also a corner filer on minimum flow to keep the tank clean. Both of the fish were conditioned for a week on an alternating diet of worms, pellets, and live brine shrimp. I will try to do daily updates to the spawn log to keep you guys in the loop. With any luck I will have a few shots of them actually mating. So any way here it goes. Day 1. (Dec10) Introducing Both fish are moved from the conditioning tank into the breeding tank. The female that Is named Molly is showing extreme interest towards Mustard (name Male betta). Molly is showing very visible vertical bars and also dancing/ flaring in front of Mustard. Mustard is also showing interest in Molly by swimming from the Styrofoam cup to Molly Day2. (Dec 11) Bubble nest When I checked the tank this morning Mustard started a bubble nest under the Styrofoam. The pair still show strong interest towards each other.
