  1. Ok so I am running 4x 80W - 60" T5HO bulbs on my 120G planted community Aquarium. It is a well established tank and has been running for approximately 4 years Lighting timings 8am-12pm on 12pm-4pm off 4pm - 11pm on 11pm-8am off Plantlife: Amazon Sword, Anubia, Cryptocoryne Wendtii, Rotala, java fern windelov, and a couple of unknowns. I am struggling a little with algae blooms may adjust light timings to see if this helps. __________________________ Filtration Fluval FX 5 Modified Intake & Output (Spray Bar) No Carbon __________________________ Dosing: Flourish Excel 2 capfuls every week ( too much ? too little? ) Flourish Comprehensive 2 Capfuls bi-weekly (too much? too little?) No Co2 yet ...looking to purchase a new system in a few months yay!! as i am looking to bring some more difficult plant life into the tank _______________________ Substrate: Dirt Base Seachem Flourite Layer Aquarium Gravel ( light layer for esthetics ) 2-3" Depth Substrate overall to 4 1/2" in back of tank ________________________ Tank Inhabitants: Rummynose Tetra Neon Tetra Harlequin Rasbora Various Cories ______________________ From the light to the substrate it's 27" I'm running the 6700k daylight bulbs _______________________ I have been considering playing with my colours a little to do a couple of things.... 1) potential to make the reds and blues in my fish colourings "pop" 2) make the greens, browns, reds in the plant life appear more vibrant 3) potentially aid in plant growth etc Are there any recommendations on lighting colour that will do this? I have been looking into the Aquaflora bulbs? Does anyone have any experience/results with these? what (if anything) would a pink or purple light colour do for a planted tank? as I have read that these colourings will aide in making fish colours more vibrant? Would I have to alter my timings excessively if I were to start messing with lighting colours? also if anyone has any advice on somewhere in Edmonton where I could find 60" bulbs for a reasonable price that would be awesome!
  2. I am an Edmontonian who has developed a spectrally tunable light source, and am trying to find out if it may be of interest to those owning aquariums. The light can provide a near perfect match to the intensity and wavelength distribution of the solar spectrum, or instead emphasize parts of the spectrum that may be important for growth of plants or for optimizing the perceived colour of fish. It could cycle day/night or could mimic the spectrum hitting the ocean at any point on the globe (or the underwater spectrum at a prescribed depth). Currently I am looking at applications to solar cell calibration and botany research. However I know little about the needs of aquarium owners and wonder if this type of lighting is advantageous and whether the instrument should be modified specifically for aquarium use. Thanks for any comments or replies!
  3. I have a 36 gallon bow front that I would like to plant. I have had fish for 20 years, never tried plants... I already have a nice small piece of Malaysian driftwood that I boiled forever and is in the tank. I would really like to have a low tech planted aquarium, could anyone point me in the right direction as to what I need for lighting (SO many different opinions online making my head spin) And what substrate I need. Where do I go to procure said supplies (best place in your opinion) And what plants I have breeding pair of Kribs I would like to put in this tank but I am worried they'd root in the plants? So I'd probably go with Rams My water is soft (we have a softener) and the ph is about 6.8-7 Right now there's only 3 corys in this tank, I moved them when the kribs started spawning as they were cranky and relentlessly chasing the cats. Thanks all
  4. Hi all, Just thought I would show a couple pictures of my solution for lighting the full area of the Fluval Edge 6g. My first thought was to upgrade the original light (which has been done) but that doesn't solve the problem of lighting the edges (ironic given the name of the tank). So here is my solution! This light bar is bonded pieces of Aluminum acting as a heat sink for high power LEDs, the bar should be giving out between 750 - 850 lumens additonal light to where it is needed most in this type of tank. These are the highest power LEDs I could source to fit inside this type of heat sink, they are capped, bonded and soldered into the frame. I'll be monitoring the tanks temperatures closely as I have a good handle on what they are without the extra light bar. On first impressions the whites of my CRS really pop out making them standout in lot of plant life. The edges of the tank are fully illuminated and I'll be keeping an eye on the plant growth! If anyone is interested I am considering making a lower profile version (depending on the temps) so PM if you think you might like one, I bought all the tools and seems a shame only to build one with all the gear.

    Odyssea T5 Ho

Hey Guys, I am looking for opinions on the Odyssea T5 HO Lights. Looking at getting the 48" 4 bulb setup. Has anyone had any experience for them? I know it cab be a risk because it is a cheap product. But at about $150 shipped to me... worth trying? Any other economical brands I should be looking at?
