skimmin
I have finally ordered my new 120 gal starfire tank with dual external overflows and an 80gal ruge/sump. I still have a couple weeks to go before I pick it up so I'm researching as much as possible. My big dilema is what to use for circulation. External return pump? 1 or 2 submersibles? powerheads? wavemakers? I wanna do this one right. The display tank is 48x24x24 and the sump has 2 drain boxes(one that bypasses the refugium to prevent overcirculation through the refugium)Any advice from experiance would be a big help. fshkpr4evr
What will be the setup and what do you intend to stock it with? Freshwater...plants, plecos, schooling fish, big or small fish? Marine.... fish or invertabrates? What will you have more of? Circulation in any tank is always good, but you definitely want to match the circulation requirements with the species kept. Dominic
Well I had a similar setup years ago with a 230 Gallon jobby. Obviously with a refugium your doing Salt. I would recommend an external pump attached to your sump far away from your refugium. Nice place to put Protein skimmer also. If your return pump or pumps are strong enough you should have no need of powerheads, Get a Splitter for the end of your returns so you can have essentially 4 returns. Point at least 1 if not 2 returns near the surface or the waterline to agitate the surface this will increase oxygen, therefore no need for wavemaker except if you wanna spend endless amounts of money on your tank. And trust me you can, a tank your size after Rock and livestock, chemicals,Salt,Equipment, lighting, sand, your looking at about $4000 I figure. Not to mention power bills and Salt Creep. but it will be a beautiful showpiece if you put the time in.Anyways enough of that you will find out soon enough. Good luck if you have any other questions let me know. Cheers Edited November 13, 2007 by Dominic
Fireisfun
Hey Dominic, I am about to start a project building a foam rock wall for a 120 gallon reef tankand I was planing on extending the back wall out 4 inches from the back corners on each side to have a hidden area for the sump intake and return. For the intake I was hoping to design it as a spill over style and for the return have a couple of PVC tubes hidden in different levels to allow the water out in different zones. Would You think this would provide adequate flow? I will be using my old 40 gallon long as the sump but I'm still not sure on the design I'll be using. Any links to a decent sump/fugue layout plan?
