I.D. Help Please!

Recommended Posts

I got this little fella and I thought it was a JD hybrid. It is was a short bodied cichlid with washed out brown colour and spangling. Now it is red and looks like a jewel cichlid with short body. It may still be a hybrid but what kind? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Here are a couple of bad pics of the mystery fish:

THANKS!

Could it actually be a deformed fish? The colouring sure suggests jewel... I don't know anything about the JD, but that super short tail looks very odd! In mammals, I would be able to say definitively that it was a viable deformity, but fish are so strange... LOL

I would say deformed jewel - hope you didn't pay too much for it!

If it were an hybrid, I would guess it to be jewel x sevrum, but that is VERY unlikely.

Yeah I think it also looks like some sort of deformed jewel. I have 2 jewels in one of my tanks, but they have longer bodies. Is this the only one you have like this? I have never seen a jewel that looks like that unless it is a terrible hybrid gone wrong lol.

Lol, whatever it is, it is a very unique fish, and I am sure you are one of the only people to have a jewel that looks like this. I am thinking it is just a birth defect or somewhere down the line of genetics in this fishes family, there was possibly the same defect which was passed down the line. Jewels come from such an odd place, it is hard to say if they would cross with any other SA/CA fish.
