Here is the 90 gallon tank

Filtration: Rena XP4, Cascade 1200 (w/ no media baskets), media used includes lava rock, plastic pot scrubbers, filter floss and sponge

Lighting: 48" coral life with colormax bulbs, One 36" florescent fixture with regular bulb

Landscaping: Quikrete sand, mint julip rock from Canar, PVC pipes and a silk plant

Background: black aquarium background (wish I would have painted it)

Additional food: algae growing on the rocks and back wall

Residents: 22 Tropheus sp. "Red" (Chimba) at 1.5 to 2", 8 Synodontis petricola at 1.5", countless Malaysian Trumpet Snails

If you have a lot of 'gunk' going thru your filter, lava rock can clog. If you have a good mechanical filter before your lava rock, it should last for years. I've had lava rock in use for a couple years, and it's still working. :)

My sister-in-law just saw my Petricola for the first time and fell in love! She asked if she could keep any in her 10 gal... B)
