Hung,

When you received the fish and after floating them in your tank...

did you net the fish and release or did you dump the water in the bag in the tank with the fish?

I netted my fish (did not add any of his water) after floating for 30 mins and adding some of my water to the bag. When i looked again last night and it still appears that it has not spread to any other fish, Thanks goodness!!!!

James just emailed me to ask that... i though i'd ask you.

Floating itself is a bad idea, unless you've seen the person's tanks yourself that your fish are coming from. Who knows what the bags were sitting on/in throughout their journey, and whatever it is, you just released that into your tank as well. Best idea is to have an ice cream pail handy, open the bag of new fish, and siphon water from your tank into the bag 3-4 times (a little each time) to get the water closer to tank water.

Some interesting points raised in this recent CF thread with regards to acclimatizing fish, floating bags, pH shock, etc.

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=84883

Personally I never float bags, or attempt to acclimatize the fish to my water.

I used to use the drip system until I realized it might be causing more harm, than good.

Information over load!!! thanks guys for helping me out... i have never though other wise that to float the bags.

My dad used to do it...

My LFS suggested for me to do it...

Wow... i can see why... water quality can be affected by so many things, even just a drop/dust/chemicals left on the bag!

Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that one is an eye opener!

  • 4 weeks later...

I was just going to post an update this week, thanks RD for the reminder.

Hung culled his, after treating with a few meds with no luck.

I'm on my second treatment of coppersafe as it tells me to treat every 30 days.

There is no improvement on their spots.

I'll post some updated pics later this week.

Do you still think its a parasite?

is there anything else you would recommend to treat with?

not sure what to do...

One thing that i have noticed though:

when the 2 juvies were together the bigger of the 2 tore into the back fin of the little guy. When the little guy's fin grew back there were no black spots at all on the back fin.

:well:

Do you think that it was still from a parasite? maybe just leaving permanent scars?

ammonia burn?

I still don't know what to make of this.

should i still keep them in QT or do you think it would be safe to let them go in the big tank?

Thanks RD for helping with this.

My soon to be wife won't let me cull any fish at any time. I'm in it for the long run.

I'll post some pics tonight.

Pictures as promised:

This is after about 30-40 days since the black spots just appeared.

i'm on the 2nd treatment of copper safe.

Spots are still there, and i'm not sure they are getting any better!

I cannot cull them though... just cannot bring myself to do it.

If anyone else wishes to put in thier 2 cents... my piggy banks are open.
