Water Softerner

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone in the board runs a water softener for the whole house and use the softened water for their aquarium.

Wondering how does the softened water affect aquarium fish.

I will install one in my home. I am not sure if I need to bypass it from the tap for the aquarium.

I've been using water softener for two years in Calgary - mixing bypass cold water with soft hot water for goldfish (120 gallons) and for heavily planted CO2 tank with no issues. I wouldn't do it for saltwater though.

It can be done. I would watch test....the dissolved solids they may go as high as 800. I know of Rainbows doing ok where angels and discus and others possibly not so much.

I have one and have never had issues. I did do a bypass on my cold so when I was filling the tank it would basically be diluted 50% but that was also 6 months after I checked how that sink was plumbed. So works both ways.

Might be a good idea to take a look at which salt you use as well.
