  1. Cool... planning to go check out All-Season's tomorrow. :)

Planning to go with a glass top as far as I know. Going to go the ultra-cheap route and see if I can't get one made.

    Thanks guys!

  2. :welcome: back. What were the types of fish you were keeping and what are you planning on keeping now?

Thank you! The fish I *was* keeping are in my signature. I had to sell off most everything and gave the 50g to my B-I-L.

I'm down to 2 lonely bettas. But not for lo-o-o-ng!!

  3. Looking to start back in the hobby. Going to have to start small this time, space is an issue. I want to go with a 20g long... to start. :P

Where's the best place to buy an All-Glass 20 long in Edmonton? So many new places since I was last in the hobby...

    Thanks!

  4. So I'm looking to start a 20 gallon long, planted, community tank. Likely a South American type if my water params are not too messed up in my new location.

Lights have changed a lot since I was in the hobby before... I don't think I wanna go *extreme* high light. Was thinking between 2-3 watts/gallon. CO2 added. Fluorite substrate or Eco-Complete.

Suggestions? I don't have a lot of money to spend, I am curious about T5's and ballast kits. Am willing to try DIY type ideas as well.

    Thanks! :)

  5. ... and I have nothing!

Due to accommodation restrictions I had to totally get out of the hobby (yes, it totally sucked)... 'cept for a couple bettas.

I finally have a place where I can at least have *a* tank. Whooohooooo!

Looking to get a 20g long, not sure what to keep yet, probably a mixed community, heavily planted... must have plants... lotsa plants!

It's great to see some of the same people that were here from waaay back when.

  6. Fish TB is not the same as Flex.

I had an SAE with Flex once... moved it to a QT tank, dropped temp to 72-74 used Maracyn and Maracyn 2 in combo. Took about 2 weeks for him to recover but he did! His mouth still looks a little funny from scarring when it got so gnarly but Flex is usually fatal so that's not bad. :)

    HTH

  7. Oooooooooo I'm so excited!! -ham-

One of my labs I've kinda decided is a male, he is bigger, brighter, more 'show-offy' than the rest. Last little while I've noticed him chasing everyone else around. Couple nights ago I saw him for the first time doing a wierd, vibrating dance thing... very cool to see, btw!!

Anyways, today I see 2 labs with 'bulgy' mouths/chins! -ham-

They seemed like they wanted to eat but couldn't figure out how to get the food in without opening their mouths!!

OK, so now comes the questions...

Aren't they a little young for this? They are only about 2-2 and a half inches... what kind of numbers can I expect?

Is it ok just to leave them in the main tank? I notice they are hiding quite a bit, acting a little wierd... will it be stressful for them to stay in there?

How long will they be holding for?

Is there anything I should or should not do?

I haven't actually decided whether or not I'm going to try and save any this time around... any thoughts on this??

Any and all advice will be much appreciated!! Thanks! :)

  8. OK you can take my advice or leave it... I am a newbie too after all... but IMO you should hold off on the mel. cyans simply because you are new to this whole thing and the worst thing a newbie can do is get in over their heads...

Why the big rush? I know, I know... it's soooo hard not to get everything you like at first... there's soooo many cool fish to choose from!!

But I am personally really glad I stuck to just 3 different species, for simplicity's sake, and until I have a better handle on things... and more tanks!! :smokey:

Isn't it better to have less fish with more room until you have a better idea of what you are doing? Or until you are settled in your new place? I would hate to see you get all these cool fish and then start losing them due to stress or overcrowding or whatever or have to cull all the fry because you don't know what they are...

and yes when the time comes you can always get some mels. from me!! ;)

Just my 2 cents... please don't be offended! Just wanted to give you some food for thought! :)

  9. So what you're REALLY saying is that I'm just incompetent?? :boxer:

Well OK then, hopefully I will get better at this... I'll try swirling the water a bit too and see if that makes any difference.

You can always place a fine mesh kitchen stainer in your sink to catch any sand until you get a better feel for it.

Ah... now THAT'S a good idea! Thanks Neil! :)

  10. It's the 50 footer Neil... is that what's causing the problem?

That AND the fact that the water pressure sucks in this house??? How do I overcome that?

I do try and just hover it over the sand about an inch like you said but it just doesn't pick up the crap like I think it should. So then I get too close and OOPS there goes a bunch of black sand down the tube!!

    Thanks for the help! :)

  11. OK, I'm new to sand as a substrate and whenever I do a water change I end up sucking up a fair bit of sand. I even took the uh... 'big green tube thing' off the end of the python and just use the hose but it seems like there is not enough suction to pull up the waste...

What am I doing wrong? Or does anyone have any tips or tricks they would like to share??? :well:

  12. -A male betta will attack the other fish in his tank if their fins are more or as beautiful as his

True... but not necessarily only fish with 'nice fins'... quite often a male betta will attack anything just 'cuz he wants to, they are highly territorial... there are exceptions of course, but IMO the exceptions are rare.

-A male betta prefers to have two females bettas with him (what man wouldnt?)

False... well I guess it could be true depending on how you wanna look at it... he COULD want to have 2 females in there with him because that would mean he'd have 2 other fish to scrap with! In other words, don't keep males and females together EVER... unless you're trying to breed them but even then it's iffy and a very involved process.... and BTW... females are not necessarily more peaceful than males either.

  13. I have...

    15 Red Zebras

    10 Electric Yellows

    13 Mel. Cyans

So 38 fish... overstocked somewhat. I will be thinning them out a bit once I can see what's what... I'm not the one to ask about stocking limits though...

I would pay to see you dance with your fishes

    Tom you kill me!!
