  1. Very cool. Where did you get these guys?
  2. Yeah, this new guy's a real digger / spitter. I didn't have a problem before he was in there.
  3. Thanks for the directions and the suggestion, I'll be heading over to Double AA (is that 4 A's?) some time soon.
  4. When I cleaned out my AC at the end the syn x calls home there was quite a bit of sand in the media compartment. I guess I won't be extending that intake tube. I'm thinkng of putting a sponge over it to keep out some of that sand.
  5. What's the closest hydroponics shop near Chinook mall? I went to one on McLeod Trail - near the Cheesecake Cafe - and the guy had no idea what KNO3 or KH2PO4 was.
  6. How many wafers should this medium (8") CA get per day?
  7. That whole set up is amazing. I especially like the corners of the tank - nice touch.
  8. In a 90g tank would you recommend I use an extension so the intake tubes go further down the tank? Right now I just have the one tube and it''s pretty far away from the bottom of the tank. I would think it would catch more waste if it was lower. I have pfs as a substrate and it does get stirred around a bit by excavating cichlids. I would think with one extension this shouldn't be a problem.
  9. I moved it up a bit and it seemed to get better then I did a water change and rinsed out the media and the bubbles were back in full force. So I took off the quick filter attachment and the bubbles have gone away. I guess that attachment is the problem. Has anyone else had problems with that type of attachment?
  10. How dare you! :chair: J/K I appreciate the guesses. The tank isn't planted and I don't think it's a dirty tank. I change at least 30% of the water every monday and I move stuff around enough that I doubt any waste is building up. I'm going to raise it a bit and see if that helps.
  11. Maybe I should have mentioned I also have the "prefilter" attachment on this AC 802 powerhead. It isn't near the top at all. If it was pulling anything in it would be the returning water from the AC 500, which could contain some air bubbles that are being spread out further through the powerhead. I don't really have a lot of options as to where this thing can go b/c of where my electrical outlet is. I'm thinking maybe I'll put it in the middle of the tank and point it directly at the glass. That should stir things around quite a bit. Any thoughts on that or the original dilemma?
  12. My tank is full of tiny bubbles that seem to be coming from the powerhead. It's like this all the time but the powerhead seems to "cough" out more periodically. Does anyone know how to fix that / what the problem is?
  13. Okay, now I'm leaning even further towards the wafers
  14. I'm leaning towards the wafers, but I might go with the large pellets.
  15. The fish in question can be seen here. It's only been in the tank for a week, still pretty shy. It's starting to figure out that I'm the one dropping food in but still hides when I approach the tank. I'd say it's about 8" long. Also in the tank are 4 2.5" - 3" GT's and 8 Diamond tetras. Right now the GT's and tetras nibble on the wafer and once they drop it the big guy swallows it up. $14.99 is manageable I was just hoping to get some more use out of all these community pellets I have. So far I've barely made a dent in them.
  16. So far my new CA hybrid isn't eating any of the NLS pellets it's only eating algae wafers. I suspect it's because the pellets are too small or it's because not many make it to the bottom half of the tank. Rather than buy new food I'd like to use up the NLS that I have, since it's taking me forever to get through one container. I'd like to use gelatin (or something else) to make some larger NLS "wafers". Any suggestions on how to do this or should I just buy some and read the package?
  17. How does he do with the plants Kevin? Most CA's either dig them up or eat them, do you find he leaves your plants alone?
  18. Most people probably wouldn't attempt this with regular JD's but the blue one seem to be a lot less agressive. I've heard of other ones getting bossed around by rams.
  19. :w00t: That's the one word I was hoping I wouldn't hear. Hybrid isn't a big deal but flowerhorn, that's another story. I have to admit , with the spots near the tail and the colouring I did think it resembled a flowerhorn but then again the pictures I've seen of syns vary to such a degree that I was hoping it was just a really red one. I guess once it gets a little more comfortable those Diamond Tetras aren't going to enjoy its company. I assumed this thing got dropped off at Riverfront b/c it was taking a beating maybe it was the one handing them out? That seems a little unlikey given how timid it is, but who knows? Then again, maybe it's already been beat into submission.
  20. I decided to pick it up on Saturday so now everyone can have a shot at telling me what it is, not that it really matters. It's a little beat up but I think with some TLC, NLS, and clean water it should be a looker It's still nervous when I lift the lid to feed them but it comes up to the glass and stares at me when I'm looking in. Definitely the most personable fish I've had so far. With flash Without Without Fins PS - I searched for the menu options to change the shutter speed, etc. but this camera (Canon powershot SD200) doesn't seem to have them.
  21. One thing I've noticed is the last two groups at Riverfront and the group at Golds have looked really good. They don't look like the sickley bjd's that I have seen before. That's another thing that's making them tempting these days.
  22. I know blue jd's usually don't last long but their constant presence in lfs is making them almost irresistable (esp now that I don't have to wait for 1/2 off saturdays ). My questions is: is the cause for their early demise usually something that's contagious? I realize getting one is taking the risk that it could die (quickly), but I don't want to risk filling the tank with a contagious disease - that's not worth it.
  23. Thanks guys, I probably won't get juvies though. I was thinking of the large solitary one, it's about 10", with no hump. The one thing that makes me question it being a syn is that it appears to have barring and I've never seen that on any pictures. It's in a dark tank too so I haven't had a good look at the colouring.
  24. Has anyone else seen this guy? Any guesses? Maybe I'll be able to tell once it's in my tank (maybe).
  25. Thanks Christian. It was still there today at lunch, but I know it could still be sold. If it's still available could you let me know what it would cost? And once you have a number in mind, would it be fair to say I could get it for half that this Sat.? :hey: (If I put it on hold :shifty: )
