  1. yea at that size it should be sexable.

this is a pic of my female at about 2 inches

females have a darker patch at the front of their dorsal fin. At that age they start to loose spangling on their tails, males retain this spangling and eventualy get more throughought their body.

  2. it really depends on if its a male or female. that cichlid-forum thing isnt that accurate.

males grow to about 16 inches and females smaller, about 12 inches. they are fairly mild tempered up to about 6 inches and then pop goes the festae, they get nuts. now I have had much more psyco fish but the thing about festaes, especialy males is they are built tough, males get very massive and heavy.

I would say the smallest tank you should put a full grown male in is a 5x24

however festaes are very slow growers so a 90 gallon would suffice for quite a long time.

a female could live in a 90 gallon for life. that is with no other fish.

if you have any other questions just ask (rudy kept a pair of festaes for some time I would concider him the expert) I can answer some questions as well though.

BTW where did you get them?

  3. yea my mom's africans have been hooked on the stuff for about a month and whoo-wow the color difference is amazing. they are even growing faster and actimg more lively than they ever did.

I just wish the cichlasoma pellets where bigger as most neo cichlosoama grow to be at least 6 inches. my midas has a reall hard time getting down the 1mm pellets before they are suspended throughout the tank in a big mess and she gives up, then I got little pellets laying all over the tank floor within minuts.

anyway I think ill pick up some fry stuff for my festaes

  4. i got 2.

im saying Loiselle. reall cool fish too, they are labled as salvini at 12.99 and they have another tank of real salvini at 5.99. so long story short I got 2 sweet fish for 12 bucks

  5. They hide most of the time, but then again so do Dovii

true, true. and again yes they are very tough fish But rudy left out one very important thing salvini's are good for, hunting.

if you have the space to harvest your own feeders (or a pair of convicts) it is great to watch these fish take down others (if you dont have a queasy stomach). they are really apt hunters and the way they stalk their prey is very interesting

  6. are titanium heaters any good?

I mean with my pre hagen ebo I just used a 200 watt and it kept my 90 gallon tank and a consitant 79 degrees all year round and a 75 watt kept my 50 at 78degrees. can you get the same kind of stability and efficency out of a ti?

  7. yea too bad I couldnt get downstairs to get it (that would be if I knew where it was)

it looked so sweet. molly was just pissed because the heater was hanging down rigt by the entrence to her cave

  8. well it happened. last night I was in bed and I couldnt sleep (cause I busted up my foot) and I heard a bang come from my tank. my midas had the heater in her mouth and was swimming back about a foot and a half and charging at rock with the heater trying to break it and finaly she sucseded. probably the most amazing think I have ever seen.

anyway I figure I should probably invest in ti heaters. does anyone know where I could get them for a good price?
