  1. I have a tank that I purchaced that was painted black as a background and it looks great , however if I were to do it all over again i would use material that you can buy at any Home depot that is used for cabinet bottoms ... it is vinyl and comes in many different colors , so it is versitile with what you have in your tank and what look you want... and it is easy removed if you want a change... and it is also cheaper then paint..

  2. As most of you know I just started my first tank of discus oh.. about a month or so ago..

And yes They are all still alive. LOl..

    -01-

Anyways I have been working long hours at the hospital leaving at 640 am and getting home just after 8 pm.. My brothers girlfriends brother is staying with us this week and sleeping on a mattress on the floor right next to my fish tanks.

I thought i would be nice by not turning on my fish lights at 6 am.

I asked my bros girlfriend to turn on the lights for me, and told her how much to feed my fish. SHe has seen me do it a million times..

I got home the other night at 820 pm. Totally exhausted and looking forward to having a bath and going to bed.. I went downstairs to turn off my lights and check on my fish...

I looked into my discus tank and i couldnt even see the bottom of my tank. It was competly covered in Food.. and the water was brown. Somehow 8 pellets turned into 8 handfulls of NLS plus some flake food.

That wasnt the only tank affected so was 3 other tanks..

Long story short, I did some huge water changes.. and ever single fish made it. I was super surprised to see that the discus were fine and eating the next day!!

needless to say. She hasnt fed the fish since!!!

Lets hope thats the end of your bad luck!

  3. Pianos dont even come close to that kind of weight...We have two pianos ...both upright proffesionals and I was able to lift them up high enough on each end on my own to install cushions under the wheels to stop them from damaging our hardwood...not sure of the weight but for sure no more then 500-600 lbs

I would build the beam support probably putting together 2x10 lumber flat under the beams in the opposite direction and putting a couple of telescoping supports under it...

  4. Might as well add my two cents worth as well !

I read an article a few months back about airstones and it stated that they are actually a waste of time the only bennifit is the disturbance of the water surface that may break up the film on the water if there is a film.

I have alway used AC HOB filtres and this seems to look after both of these problems ( surface film and airation ) and I always put double the needed filtration on my tanks , one on each end of the tank... not sure why I started doing this LOL but I have myself conviced now that double filtration is best... I could be out to lunch on this theory..

Is there a possiblity that your filtration shut down over night Gina?

  5. Couldnt you just put a divider in the tank with the female in it? Seems to me this would be better as the female would be less stressed by leaving her in the exact same water...

Question! After you notice a female cichlid holding, How many days before you take action to try and save the little ones from certain cannabalism?? Does this depend on Species? I have Pseudo Saulosi and Flametail breeding groups. Do you seperate that female and make her cough them up into a breeding net?? I need some advice on the best way to do all this breeding stuff, I already have some growout tanks for the fry.
  6. Is there a trick to vacuming sand? I have always had gravel on the bottom of my tanks... I put sand in my latest tank but I find it very hard to vacume it up completly.. Its a great looking tank the fish love the substrate and you hardly see any spoil.. problem is I know it is there... would like any advice possible to make it better... Thank You

  7. I am looking for information on these Africans. I purchased 4 juviniles today at the mini auction after the Edmonton aquarium club meeting.

I have a tank with bristle nose plecos, is there any problems keeping these fish with this type of pleco?

Any other information about this type of ciclid would be appreciated..

Oh yes thank you to the lady that brought these to the auction at least I think it was a lady that I was talking to earlier in the auction... She also had some cat fish... would like to talk to her again about the species she had there, I didnt buy them but was interested in how she bred them..

  8. anytime! it's good stuff B)

I never clean my filtre material by running water over it...use the water that you take out when you change out your water. That way you will not kill off the good bacteria and I would only do this as jvision said rarely/ once every 2-3 months would be lots... oh ya and dont overfeed or overstock the tank..
