Hey MM! I'd check out the Nature Pets. The store in Pt Claire looks small from the outside, but it's huge inside! Plus it's only a >5min drive away from Big Al's.

From the East coast,

It seems that the genetic oddity that gives you the EBJDs also makes them unable to have viable fry. Guess you need to breed a regular JD to a blue one, then pick out one of the fry that carries the blue gene and then breed that back with a blue.

Nice festae! Definitely nice and outgoing. Mine was coming out of his shell until I swapped tanks on him with a haitiensis. For some reason both fish were skittish in my hallway tank.

I don't know if I'd go as far as saying that the females are that much more stunning than the males (nics and festae). The females usually need a potential mate nearby to have their colors really turn on and pop. At smaller sizes, yeah nic females are more colorful than males, but when full grown, males are just as interesting to look at. They might not have the very pronounced colors, but there's a LOT of subtleties to them.

Here's a 10"+ (yes, they do get that large!) male nic that I rescued. He was still recovering, but he had awesome coloration to his body, head and most of all his fins!

And I'm not quite sure if I'd call a fish as aggressive and potentially up to a foot long as being a great community fish. Female festae can be downright nasty! Before I sold my female, she was quite drab when not courting with her mate.

I've had a couple in operation for close to 2 years and haven't had any problems with either one.

I just don't let the water out of the hoses if I'm just doing a canister cleaning. Just fill up the canister with water, reconnect and go! Still would rather just use the push to prime head on the pro-II line of Eheim canisters

Nice looking beast! I have a 'pair' that I've split up to allow them to grow. The female is over 8" now. Too bad mine haven't had a successful spawn... TONS (and I mean a TON) off eggs, but no fertilization. The female is always too protective of the eggs

I've had 2 regional types of HRP. Ones from Rapps were quite placid. I had a couple males from Rio Monga from Ken Davis (bought some at ACA in 2006) and they were mean SOBs. As in dominating V. bifas and a few festae, well until the larger fish double their size :P
