I am going to be commuting between provinces for a while and will have a tank or two starting in my BC apartment (surprise!).

Does anyone know of a BC (Vancouver area) site similar to this one?

...and Yes, I know nothing is equivalent to AA lol.

As mentioned by earlier poster, Alberta Building Code 2006 requires a permit (roughly $200) for any pond or pool more than 24 inches deep in Alberta. Apparently getting the permit after the fact is more expensive than getting one first, if you plan to go deeper than 24 inches.

There are a whole bunch of regs. in the code regarding the pond and the required fencing... (i.e. 6 ft tall, inside locks on all gates, locks located at least 5 ft off the ground, etc. etc.)

In Calgary we also need a City Development Permit if pond exceeds 600mm.

Report your suspicions to your local fish and wildlife office, let them take a look.

When I started keeping cichlids the best advice I got from the members here was to alter the landscape when ever I added new fish and to use dither fish - top tank level fast swimmers - to distract the cichlids and reduce aggression. I started out using Giant Dianos and now I use Rainbow fish... works great!

Not a big fan of cats in my neigbourhood running loose and crapping everywhere in my garden... please let me know if you get the 12ft feline eating mutant...we can work out a deal lol

Lots of knowledgable people here, and yes a lot of great deals on livestock and equipment.

I've had luck raising male GT's with most african and south american chichlids... just don't add a female ... once they lay eggs they attack anything in range... and put the run on the much larger male as well. I've had a female GT attack my hand when working on a tank.

Never tried to add smaller chichlids to a larger male GT's so no idea how that will workout. I'd definitely re-shuffle the tank decorations as you add the new fish, that may jumble the territories enough to reduce aggression.

Just remember if the glass guys are going to silicone it for you that they need to ensure they are not using the normal, mildue resistant silicone, it will leach chemicals into your tank. The aquarium grade is easily available and will ensure you don't have that problem.

Likely the source, perhaps add a quaranteen tank for future purchases?

I just not sure how long is a "safe" quaranteen time.

The cage pops up to let you know it needs cleaning cause the flow is down.

I used to have the overflow problem too - then started using the AC's leveling part (black tab like thing that slots into the bottom of the filter) sometimes with some foam padding to tilt the filter more toward my tank instead of just level. When the cage pops up it seems to keep the water that otherwise overflows down the outside of the tank from doing that, instead it just falls into the tank.

The one I recieved from "NameRemoved" was not in the normal link to this site's message system but seems to be a direct email but shows the source as AlbertaAquatica just like the normal notifications.

The from address is copied below:

Is this usual or is he/she doing something strange with the email location / title (ie. using Alberta Aquatica's name)? May not be anything wrong but it seemed odd to me.

(Edit: I now recall that I bought some fish from this person once - nice person so likely not a problem but wondered if such emails are common with the AlbertaAquatica source name?)

Sorry, my recent heart attack left me unable to carry anything, my buddy was helping with that. As to the magic pixies - I told the runner I was putting it back as a 777 lot item if they could get another buck or two for it, then we left 15 minutes later with a few hours left on the auction. Sorry I was unable to followup on that, also sorry such a dirty piece of junk was accepted fir auction in the first place - I bid only to get things started - even the auctioneer saw that.

I see below Werner apparently now professes some medical expertise lol. I've been to only 3 auctions in my life, all the same fish ones - this last one was very enjoyable thanks to the good humour and pace of the auctioneers but don't worry friend, stressful or overly exciting they are not lol so thought it would be a safe, unstressful outting and it was, my thanks to the organizers.

I brought home;

- 4 Julidochromis ornatus

- 4 Strawberry Peacocks (1 didn't survive)

- 2 Juvie Albino Bristlenose Plecos

- 3 Altolamroldgus Calvis

- Generous Bag of Java Moss

- Generous Bag of Naja grass - "Guppy Grass"

- Eheim accessory surface skimmer & air filter for $14(skimmer retails for roughly $60)

The big ugly 4' light box I bid $5 on to get it out of the way (and taught me to listen closely to the auctioneer - I thought he said it was brass - not just the knobbs) I tried to donate it back for the 777 class if anyone wanted it for a buck or two but it was left it at the hall for disposal

My buddy (he got me started keeping cichlids) took home;

- 4 Strawberry Peacocks

- 1 nicely coloured Electric yellow for $4

- another bag of fish I can not recall

The auction went much faster and smoother than in previous years I thought. The organizers, auctioneers and runners did a great job! The increase from $1 all the way to $5 for bumps (supporting Haiti relief) reduced the number I saw to about 3 - if they'd gone to $2 to give the extra to the Red Cross I'd have bumped all the lots I was interested in - but since I couldn't afford to bump them all at $5 each I had to wait to bid anyway.

It was a good idea to support a charity though!

You have to be careful and keep the lid on because they are great jumpers but I use 5+ schools of hatchet fish for my top layer in my tropical tanks with serpaes low down, wild cardinal school in the middle. The hatches come in several small but flashy species, mostly silvers but there are some great marble sides as well.

A cool looking fish but don't seem to bother anything in my tanks.

I use prefilters on my Eheims, just make sure the sponges are large enough to ensure you don't restrict your flow too much, change/rinse the pre-filter fairly often in your tank water removed during your weekly changes.

I bought a bucket of NLS "Grow" pellets and that has handled all my fry and small tropicals for more than a year so far.

I plan to put up some larger Green Terrors (Golden Saum), one to three 5"+ thick and healthy Green Severums, some new filters and perhaps some smaller tanks.
