  1. Thanks, I picked up some ich x today. .....didn't read this until now. It's weird because tank has been set up with no problems the last few months, used a seeded filter when I set it up. They were all breeding prolifically and then all of a sudden this terrible outbreak grrrr

  2. So has anyone ever had their fish get ich after spawning? It's only affecting my 4 rainbows that were spawning but doesn't seem to be harming any of my smaller rainbows or penguin tetras and plecos. ....thought they were getting better yesterday but my 2 big males are covered today so that means it's time to go grab something stronger than using salt and higher Temps :( water quality is excellent as I recently tested that and do wc's twice a week to keep water clean for growing out my pleco babies

  3. Well currently in my 75 I have 11 Boesemani rainbows, 2 full grown BN plecos and their fry, and 11 penguin tetras. It's fully planted. Sponge filter I put in there 3 days ago, I also have my Rena XP4 running on that. And my 25 gallon I'm holding a bunch of rainbows and tetras for a friend for now and that one has an AC 70 and an AC 30 running on it (it's way overstocked). I was going to set up a 5 gallon to move the spawning mop over to so that my fry have a better chance at survival lol. I don't mind doing daily water changes, but I don't want them to die from an ammonia or nitrite spike either!

  4. Just wondering how long it typically takes to seed a new sponge filter? I have one going in my 75 gallon which is fully stocked, and I would like to move it over to a 5 gallon where I'm also transferring over my spawning mop that has Boesemani rainbow eggs on it. Just hoping after a few days in the tank that it's seeded enough to prevent the tank from cycling. .....or I can take the AC 30 off my 25 overstocked holding tank and put it on. It's been going on there for over a week now along with my AC 70

I would attach a sponge to the intake to avoid fry being sucked up :)

  5. So I've had a breeding pair of BN plecos for only a few weeks and it appears that they've already had babies! My biggest question after doing some research is do I have to feed them liquid or live foods? I wasn't really planning to breed them yet so I am not prepared lol. I've been tossing algae wafers into the hole that they're in with my male

  6. I typically do anywhere from 25-50% weekly or every other day depending on the tank or fish I'm keeping and how many fish (close to being overstocked) as well as if I'm growing out fry or what I'm feeding them. There are many factors to how much and how often I do it. If you have a tank that hasn't had a water change in a while like at least a month I would do a smaller water change because I wouldn't want to shock the fish. ....since pH usually lowers the longer between water changes. As for 100% water changes I have done close to that doing 90% on grow out tanks or when I kept discus

  7. Awesome thanks Jason! So it's safe then to set up rain barrels to collect from the roof and stuff? I guess if I threw in a filter with lots of carbon that would help! I just wasn't 100% sure that's how they collected it. ......yeah I was thinking in winter I could just connect freshly fallen snow. Living a bit further out of the city we won't have to worry as much about pollutants as we would in the city

  8. Ok so I have an older Red sea 5lb paintball CO2 system that needs to be hydrotested before I can fill it. Is it worth getting it tested or should I look into buying a new system? And it's been a while since I have used it so I cannot remember approx how long that size will last me, I will be using it on a 55 gallon fully planted aquarium with high lights. Thanks!

  9. Hey everyone, just wanted to know everyone's experiences and suggestions on using rain water instead of RO combined with tap to help lower hardness? I have an RO already but looking for less expensive alternatives to keep costs down. How do you go about collecting and storing it and do you use aeration in the storage water? Thanks!

  10. Once they grind and you have cleaned it all out, it is time to replace the impeller for sure but not necessarily the shaft. But it never hurts to replace both. Best HOB's IMO to run on any tank....although I much prefer the quiet sound of canisters.

  11. Have you tried using a flashlight at night with the lights turned out?

Unfortunately, it might require that you get up in the middle of the night, but I have done it.

I really, really wanted to get that fish out.

This method works great most of the time. You could also wait a few hours after lights go out or do it first thing in the morning before lights go on. SAE's are some of the tougher quicker fish to catch so I do feel your pain there.
