  1. You can get some very small submersible heaters that are OK in bowls as long as you can find something attractive to do with the cord. I had been using Red Sea Nano filters with my bettas, but I've switched to DIY sponge filters, and with the air on low it seems to work out OK.

The design for my sponge filters:

Some half-inch or so rigid plastic tubing, about the same length as the water is deep,

    jammed into

A chunk of sponge (I used a generic refill for a smallish Aquaclear)

    weighted down with some rocks.

Boggle at the hi-tekk awesomeness! (not!)

Do Betta's even need a heater or Filter. I have had them and never used either!! Maybe they need them and I didnt know and thats why they are no longer with me????

  2. Lol it was the only and closest guess I would have. I have not been able to find any profiles for SA/CA cichlids that look like that. Harold has some of the big spot ones, I should have known that they were not that :)

The one pictured inside the clay pot is from Harold...He is the Dominate male in my tank now!!

  3. To me it looks like a Paratilapia polleni which is from Madagascar. In which case it should not be posted here for this game.

It isn't a Paratilapia polleni from Madagascar. I dont know what it is but I have a picture of a Paratilapia polleni which is from Madagascar, see below:

  4. They're also called buck tooth plecos, look them up on planet catfish. Did you pick yours up from golds? I've had mine about 4 months from them and it's great. Be sure to feed a varied diet, algae/spirulina wafers and sinking carnivore pellets are the staple of my diet, but it'll usually chomp down on some bloodworms or other frozen food that the bichirs are getting

Thank you.Yes he is a Gold's Pleco... For his size he sure likes to eat!! He gets the algae/spirulina wafers and sinking carnivore pellets and Krill every now and again...

  5. Nice pleco. But does the name mean that it will suck on fish or just that it looks like a vampire?

Thank you!! Im really not sure how it got it's name... I got him because he is Black with White spots like my Polleni I have in that tank... He sure is a cute little bugger!!

  6. You're SOL of that my friend Chris has very few of the fish listed above are quite hard to find as well.

Spencer has 5 that I will be getting on fridays group order. I was just looking for info on raising them. Thanks

They are a typical Labiatus, high protein diet, lots of frozen foods, lots of high % wc's.

I hope we are talking about the same Labiatus, Amphilophus im hoping?

They are the same fish as the ones on Spencers banner on this website... He told me they were labiatus "Rio Olimar" I am new to these fish so I dont know if they are Amphilophus or not. Thanks for the info.

  7. You lucky bugger!!! That fish is probably #1 on my wanted list

    Congrats and good luck

You think those are sweet, look at this picture I found....

  10. Tanks A Lot on the corner of Heritage Dr and Elbow Dr sells all the Aquaclear filter media all the time for 2 for 1. I have been buying them there for the past 5 years at least. You will not find a better deal anywhere trust me. This is not a sale price - same all the time. I thought everybody knew about this.

Thanks Harold!! Nice to know this.

  11. Hey everyone! My name is Kipp. I have malawi cichlids in a 55 gallon tank, hoping to find a used 180 gallon tank soon. Anyway, just wanted to say hello and find out if there is anyone in my area with the same hobby. I don't know anyone around the Lethbridge area that has cichlids. Any talk to you all later.

    Kipp

Hello and welcome to AA!! Come on,show off your tanks!! LOL!! :welcome:

  12. Good afternoon. Does this J&L Auqatics have a web site and do they ship? I would be interested in getting some. I smell group order!! LOL!!

Thank you snaggle. I just checked the media for the AC110.. Sponge is $5.45, locally $7.99 That is just one item of many lower prices I found. I just looked quickly but they do offer some special shipping rate and free shipping if over $200.00...

  13. Yeah I heard just yesterday that they are now the 110's. I didn't look at golds the last time I was in, but I know riverfront was selling the actual filter, but didn't see any media when I was there a month ago. I might just hold off on buying the media until I go to vancouver. I was told that J&L aquatics has great prices on media and other equipment. What I did for now is cut down 2 AC 70 sponges and put them in, which should work for a while. I usually only replace my sponges every 6 months or so, just rinse them everytime I clean the filter.

  14. is running an air stone/air in a tank really needed if you have lots of circulation

I know a couple of breeder in Calgary who dont use air pumps. Myself I use them but there is one tank I have that I dont use one with no problems. In my opinion,if the tank is heavily populated I would reccomend using one!! I think it is a matter of preference.

  15. Hi Everyone,

I have been converting my Cichlid tanks from gravel to sand with a remarkable change in the colours and behaviour of my fish. I have been using Lane Mt. Sand which is a white silica based sand. I was given this sand and now I need more, does anyone know where I can purchase this product from?

    Thanks for your help

    Lee

Here is there web site with contact info. They say they have distibutors in Canada. Email them and see what they say.

Your contact is Shane Roth with Target Products. They are in Calgary and represent Lane Mountain in all industries except municipal water filtration. AWI in Calgary works with us on large filter projects. Shane is at 403-615-5661.

  16. I need your help. I saw a Pleco at a LFS awhile back and the tank had no names of its contents on it and there was a small Pleco that was Black with tiny white spots on it. I have looked online for pictures but havent found anything. If you know the name of it or have a pic of one could you please let me know. I have Polleni and thought that this Pleco would look great with them and sure would like to get one. Thanks
