you could breed some cardinal japonica shrimp and when they reproduce take the babies and stick them in the brackish till they grow out a bit.. then put them back into the freshwater tank

vals are great for starter tanks, they are very hearty, dont require a ton of light. Java moss is another great low light plant, it does not require much help at all and grows very fast, Java fern as previously stated is a great slow growing plant, attach to driftwood and it grows great. Rotala Sp Green does not require a huge amount of light, the more light it has the faster it grows.
