  1. 96W of flourescent light will only be enough for softies and mushrooms. If you want LPS, SPS or clams then be prepared to shell out a whole lot more moolah for better lights.

Says you. I run a New Wave T5HO 24" 4 bulb fixture over my 24" deep tank and I keep SPS, LPS, and there is even a crocea Clam on the bottom.

SPS are kept near the top but my open brain, blasto, Hammer and gonipora are at the bottom.

For a 24 gallon (I assume its 16" high) I would use 4 T5 High Output Bulbs and you could keep whatever you wanted. More bulbs will give you more colour choices in the bulbs. I run 1 11K, 1 Blue+ and 2 Fiji Purple but its up to you what kind of overall colour you like.

  2. i talked yo my salt water gurus and they said its fine yo youse but the trace stuff is,nt there how ever theres a bottle of chemicals that makes the water perfect excepT ph for that i put in backing soda and brought it up to 8.4 8.5 i yoused half a box of it yo make it right the chemical is like 22 $ if you want to see a pic mzg me back and ul send ya a few also i took a water samples yo aquairm enthousits and the guy there new ago i was just by what i said and the test therew him to he's going to post on here for me about it bc lots of people thought i was on crack so if you want to try it just make sure you have that chemical stuff calcium and baking soda and sifto water softner salt and nave at it good luck oh btw so far its saved me 130 $ plus 140 lbs of rock

Now I am not a perfect speller but this is near impossible to read. Download Firefox and the spell check add on. It will make it much easier.

I do agree with the person that said the salt we specifically buy for our aquarium has a bunch of additives already in it and this is why we use it. I would doubt that corals, or inverts would live very long in there because you lack the chemicals they need in their everyday lives. If you come back and say you will dose then you may as well just go buy a Bucket of salt for $50, save yourself a bunch of time and money.

Alot of people seem to forget that the Marine Salt isnt just salt it is full of additives that our inhabitants need to survive. Salt isnt one thing I would skimp but dry live rock seeded with some premium rock is a good thing. It will just take a few months for it to seed throughout the tank.

  3. FYI: After some discussion on other reef sites I decided to go with the Deltec MCE600 skimmer and 48" Tek Light T5 Fixture - 4-Bulb, 4 x 54W by Sunlight Company.

What is the price on that? I was able to get a 48" 2x250 Metal H and 4x54w T5 and 6 LED moon lights for 425 US including shipping from ZS Aurora (http://www.zsaurora.com/Product_pages/mhadv.html), and I am really pleased with it great quality and it comes with lights!

    Just a thought...

Your exchange, duty and shipping is going to drive that price through the roof. You would be better off cruising this forum and canreef looking for a used fixture.

I run a 24" 4 bulb T5HO New Wave fixture (Same company that make Teklights) and love it. Individual reflectors, 4 bulbs, runs cool, a t5HO for $130 (thanks to Gold's). I would look at a New Wave 48" fixture and they come in either 4 bulb or 8 bulb for half the price of a Tek if I were setting up a 48" tank..

  4. Well it will most likely be a 15 gallon. So 75-100 Gph? Where is the best place to get a small pump? I want to spend as little money on this as possible. If i were to sit the fuge over top the sump, i would probably need a container in which i could drill through. What do you think?

I would check out the canreef forums all you need is a small fountain pump. I would use a small rubbermaid container fi you dont care about seeing clearly inside.

  5. I am not talking about bolts we are talking air flow. Without the rear corners notched out the air is going to have a difficult time getting out and with the humidity between the water and glass there may be some bubbling between the plastic sliders and the glass which you could hear. You could also get hard water stains on the glass from water getting out through the tiny cracks (from the humidity) this will impede light. If you notch the corners even just and inch or 2 you wont get any of this and there will be plenty of air circulation over the water.

Noone mentioned anything about drilling holes. Take the time to read a post before you throw a little hissy fit. Even if they are giving you a hard time grow up a little bit and ignore them.

  6. I am unsure on what my Nitrate and Phosphate readings are as i do not have a test kit for that. I setup one of my sump chambers as a refugium. It has a light on it with a few pieces of live rock. Im thinking about adding some more live rock so that more Macro algae can grow. But the sumps walls are covered in algae. Also, is sand necessary in a refugium? What size of refugium would you recommend for a 70 gallon?

Skip the live rock and find someone who is trimming some of their Chaeto(sp?) algea this is what most people use in their sumps with good results. I use Green Grape in my tank because I like the looks of it. Yes sand in the fuge is a good idea. I would say 2 or 3 inches.

You can make your fuge as big as you want. Personally I would use a 15 gallon with 2 T5's over it with 6700K bulbs or a couple of desk lamps with some plant grow bulbs. After all your not raising coral in there your trying to grow plants.

  7. Not so good at combating algae but a really good idea for combating parasites like ich. if you want to combat algea set up a refugium either in the tank or if you can underneath. You dont want too much GPH through it so a separate tank is bet IMO.

I have seen external ones done 2 different ways. One the fuge is over the aquarium and water is pumped from the sump into the fuge which then overflow directly in the tank. You hear about people setting up refugiums to help with pod populations well this is the best way to get live one from the fuge into the main tank. The second the fuge is set up above the sump and empties into the sump.

You could make one of your sump chambers a fuge but there is too much water going through it for it to be any good.

Also a Reactor such as a Two Little Fishies with phosban would help.

What type of readings are you getting with your Phosphates and nitrates?

  8. How big are these Oscars? Unless Grande PRairie got some 8 inch Oscars in the last 3 weeks I know what size they are and I wouldnt worry about 3 3 or 4" oscars in a 45 gallon tank.

Sounds to me like they are working out some dominance seeing as the one laid claim to the whole tank and now you added 2 more. I agree you need to rearrange everything but there is no need to take the fish out.

"Just want to add another tid-bit about live feeders,...If you are having aggression issues now, live feeders will make your fish more aggressive as nurture their "Prey Drive"."

Do you have any evidence to back this up?

  9. You would still need a trans shipper to receive thee fish for you. With the cost of shipping and trans shipper it would be cheaper to just fly them in. I do agree with BlackMbuna there is mostly likely someone in Canada breeding what you are looking for or who has what your looking for just look around.

Its just like buying a truck in the states. Even if you go to the border to pick the truck up you still need the broker to get it in to Canada. Just like fish just because your willing to drive to BC and bring them back you still need the Trans Shipper.

BTW if you watch airline tickets it would probably be cheaper to just fly to Vancouver and back than pay for gas.

  10. I am still trying to figure out how a tank can be done without any glass for the front of it?

tank is done. I would post pictures of our amazing lid idea shifty.gif and how great it is but i lost the cord to the camera and I don't have a place to put the memory stick into. The glass should be here tomorrow and we are getting it coated as soon as the guy can fit us in. I will post pictures later.
