  1. I'm looking for a Hydrolycus Armatus and Tiger Stingrays (Potamotrygon Menchacai) it would be awesome if you could track some down for me as i'm having all the trouble in the world.

    thanks!

    Marek

I have a supplier that gets the tigers in once in a while and I'll search the lists for the armatus.

thank you i've been looking for tigers for months :)

  2. Beautiful pictures, looks great!

    Thank you!

    Lookin good buddy :)

Thanks bro i'm actually pretty happy with it

Very cool progression of your tank over the years. I'm a big fan of the discus set-up.

thank you! The discus tank was nice, but discus in such a large tank was a lot of work to keep up with the waterchanges they need.

what type of camera do you have? those pics are awesome :)

I use a Canon 7D and thank you!

    wow very cool...

Thanks i like it, i need one more tank mate though... i'm not sure what though

  3. very nice man! I really love aros.

Bill Peyto says "its a dandy!"

Thanks Yeah I love them also, its a shame they are so freaking expensive!

friggin sweet, how much fighting between aros?

Umm Not really, like i had a few scraps here and there but for the most part it was pretty calm. Feeding time was pretty intense always though i have a couple vids on youtube of them feeding and i always got wet.

  4. The epic saga of my 180 gallon tank as it continues to evolve!

It started as a humble discus tank well South American Tank

    DSC_000171.jpg

This Quickly grew into an obsession with Arowana

    _DSC0002.jpg

Which Caused the Change to a more appropriate setting for predators such as these...

    _DSC00022-1.jpg

Then followed stingrays and other fish and constant aquascaping to suit the stingrays and other fish...

    IMG_26561.jpg

But the every changing aquascape that is my 180 changed again... and now all that is missing is a pair of tiger rays :D

    IMG_30591.jpg

All of this over Three Years... That bush behing the loaches is all that is left of my Java fern it stood the abuse of a turtle and rays and will hopefully recover before the tigers come out to play :D

  5. pagani - thats sounds like a potentially real nice tank. I'm going to be doing a sand bottom on it. I wonder if 2 FX5's with a eheim classic (with UV) would work. I can do 2 or 3 changes a week, and feeding shouldn't be an issue. I love arowana's, but I don't really know a lot of about them right now. the red ones are amazing to look at. do you think angels would still be a safe bet in a tank with them, im sure they would grow to be large enough to hold there own, ill still try planting a few areas - maybe raised behind a stone wall with gravel and some vals or hygro. I have a few nice large pieces or rock, id be worried about the rays on edges. If I were to file them over of round them a bit does anyone know if that would be ok. as for the sand base im planning a few inches think to allow for burrowing and fun.

open to opinions and compatibility on arowana's, gonna do alot of research on them as I go.

i have a CV Maju SR Asian Arowana i can sell you if you'd like

    let me know :)

  6. well you sir are in luck, i have two scobina rays (stay the smallest of all rays) for sale, they are pretty hard to find but fortunately for you i have two i am willing to sell. you're other options are retics which are easy to find but incredibly hard to keep (finicky eaters and usually die quickly) and hystrix which are hard to find and if you do find them tough to get here

  7. i have a 180 and that tank is WAY too small for a motoro, they grow pretty fast so i hope you expect to upgrade in about a year, also if you are doing rays two 110 hobs wont cut it. you need more. on mine i have 2 fx5s an eheim 2026 and another canister with a built in UV sterilizer. if you want rays you need big tank mates, they'll eat the "Angels - Koi, Marbled, Blue, Red Shoulder, Altum and/or Chocolate", the congo tetras will be taken out if small and the gar will maybe attack the ray. ghost knife maybe but if i were you i'd look into getting either arowanas, datnoids, feifengs or some other type of larger fish, heck if youre getting a motoro you'll have to upgrade for sure so you could go South american arowanas but if i were you since you can get them, get an asian aro, they are gorgeous, easy to keep and won't bug your ray at all.

this is my tank at the moment

    _DSC0001.jpg

i have two scobina rays, they stay small but are hard to find. again if you are keeping rays you need A LOT of filtration like i mean twice as much as you would need normally

    hope that helps!

  8. have you tried out kensfish.com? they have everything for dirt cheap! 250w eheim jager heaters for $20 and shipping is really cheap! if i was you i'd go with two filters instead of one, and check out his website pretty sure you can get those for cheaper there. But ya reasoning for 2 filters? something could happen then you always have a back up :)

  9. Hmmmm in a 210 i'd put something bigger but if your interested in discus and angelfish then put them together! I did it in my 180 successfully for awhile but heres a few tips if you do it.

    1) ALWAYS more discus than angels this helps even the balance as angels are a little more aggressive preferrably a 2 to 1 ratio (two discus to one angel)

    2) Feed often, in order to keep aggression down i suggest feeding twice a day, you dont have to but happy stuffed fish are less likely to nip at each other

    3) Don't soften your water! (or drop the pH) make them adjust (trust me in the long run you'll be A LOT happier) plus its less maintenance :)

    4) Frequent water changes, i did 50% a week why? discus need perfectly clean water in order to thrive and it also helps keep aggression down (or at least it did for me)

Now i see a lot of people telling you to go to simplydiscus which is fine its a great resource HOWEVER they will tell you that there is only one "right" way of raising discus, that is by themselves(as in species only tanks) in a barebottom tank, this is utter bull. its just one way, i had planted discus community tanks for almost four years and i never had a problem.

MORAL of the story for me: I really like discus, they are amazing super colorful fish,(really boring to watch tho...) BUT after four years of them i had enough, why? they are more work than their worth IMO, Disease is ALWAYS a scare with them, it always seems like there is something wrong and trust me once you go on simply and see all the amazing fish, thats what you'll come to expect of yours, for me WAY too much work so i switched to arowanas :D don't get me wrong, i had stretches where it was great but they were short compared to the problems...

if i were to tell you anything from my experience it would be ok fine do it if you want, but when they keep getting sick on you, or dying, or just not being as colorful as they're supposed to be dont say we didnt warn you.

If i just got a new 210g you know what i'd do? i'd email Boydo @ Shine Aquatics and Get another Super Red, I LOVE my Aros everything is soo interesting with them, Feeding, WC and just watching, they're always on the move and the COLORS, waaayyyy better than discus they just sparkle and the maintenance is sooo easy. feed them and change the water and thats it. they never complain and they are tough so i dont have to worry about sickness.

Now if you really want to buy discus DO NOT BUY LOCAL, I'M TELLING YOU, YOU ARE GETTING RIPPED OFF!!! i really can't stress that enough, the quality of fish around here compared to price is terrible, If you want awesome fish for an awesome price buy from one of the Canadian Vendors on Simply Discus, if you've never bought fish online before and arent sure how to do it shoot me a PM and i'll help you through the whole thing, i've brought fish in from EVERYWHERE including stingrays from Germany. Back to discus, April in Vancover C/O Aprils Aquarium has AWESOME discus and they are exceptionally priced as well, like i said before let me know and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont get impatient and buy from BA here in edmonton they will rip you off for discus, take it from everyone on here who cares for discus. If you look at the pictures of the stuff she brings in i promise you'll love your fish again let me know and i'll be happy to help :)

  10. when it comes to water changes in planted tanks i think it really depends on what type of fish you have in that tank, i had my discus in a planted tank once and needless to say the plants did not survive the 100% w/c everyday, but i do 50% a week, why so much? well luckily (or unluckily depending how you look at it) we have really hard water, which contains many of the vital minerals and nutrients that plants need, because our water is so "rich" i don't externally ferilize but i keep low maintenance plants for that reason. If i would keep more difficult plants i would(and have). Now as for you, if you are a beginner then i say don't go for the hard plants just yet. wait and get the really simple plants now like the java ferns/swords and anubias that are really simply to care for. focus on the fish and once you got them mastered move on to the environment you're keeping them in. I cannot count the times i've been to peoples houses looked at their tanks and cringed at the overstocked tanks full of stunted fish. I'm not trying to come across arrogant here but IMO i think its much more important to make sure you are taking care of the living creatures than the plants in your tank.
