  1. a betta's tankmates is ENTIRELY dependent on the betta's personality and whether they will tolerate anything living in the same tank as them. i have a male betta that barely tolerates the ramshorn snails that are in with him, so i don't think i'll ever have fish as tankmates with this particular betta, just to be on the safe side.

you could try the shrimp and see if your betta will be tolerant of them, but be sure to have an alternate tank to move the shrimp or the betta to, should the betta be aggressive.

is your tank planted? that will make the shrimp feel more comfortable and give them hiding spots too.

oh now.. that you mentioned about aggressive betta, I think my betta may not like the shrimps. I had seen him ate my endler :D . The 2 other endlers were also disappeared.. and he had fought with my ram.

  2. thumbup.gif with Jaykit. planted shrimp would look awesome. as BettaVishVish asked, would you need to cycle it for a shrimp tank?

Shrimps? hahaha I'd never thought about this seriously but now am thinking maybe that's not a bad idea.

I have half moon betta in my fluval now, I heard that's not good idea to put betta and shrimps together.

  3. So I am planning on going for vacation for 3 weeks later this year and have got auto feeders for my 2 main tanks. That leaves my Edge shrimp tank unattended for the 3 weeks. I have a couple of indian almond leaves in there for the shrimp to graze on and plenty of plants in the tank. Any opinions on whether that will be enough? Should I try to put an autofeeder on that tank too(would load with Hikari shrimp bites)? I am worried it will dump too much food in there and cause a spike.

    So.. how's your shrimp? survived?

  4. fish don't get bored or lonely. these are human emotions that we all too often attribute to animals. we personify our pets way too often.

that being said, a fish can act listless due to having no stimulation in its environment, but this is not 'bored' or 'lonely'.

if your betta is looking 'bored' (being inactive, listless, etc) then you may want to try holding a small hand mirror up to its tank for a few minutes each day. this will cause the betta to think that another male is invading his territory and he will flare his fins and act all 'huffy' while viewing his reflection. should perk him up.

males don't need to 'meet the female' unless you are planning on breeding. females can be stressed by being near males without breeding.

yes I agree...we often personify pets as a way to communicate or translate the pets needs.

yeah I dont have any plan to breed betta...well unless I find a cool female betta :D .

    thank you for your tips.

  5. Do you think betta can feel lonely or even bored just swimming in the tank? I laughed when I typed this question..but also curious to find out the answer.

The reason I asked this because sometimes people put the betta in a small jar or bowl and the betta pretty much sitting oops floating alone. I would probably bored if I were the betta .

Can we know if the betta is bored or lonely? Do you know if male betta needs to meet the female?

  6. I don't think this will answer your question but ..I know in Java, Indonesia, if you say Betta as to refer betta fish, most people won't know.

But if you say "Ikan Cupang"..they know what you mean.

They said they call betta as Ikan cupang because its mouth likes ready to kiss till ...(ok..I’ll stop here :)) and when the fish fight, the fish will push and bite each other. In Indonesian, Ikan means fish, and cupang means kiss..more like, kissing as hickey or biting.

The other story..in Indonesia, if you say Ikan Betta..(written as Ikan Beta) it can mean as an expression, to express your ownership to the fish.

The word beta itself is only used in a certain tribe in Indonesia. Nowdays people don't use the word beta anymore. Even if they use it, it's used for fun ..it doesn't have the same meaning as in the old days.

The word beta was used to emphasize your love, respect or ownership to something or someone. So in the old days if someone said ikan beta, that means the person has so much love to the fish, very proud to the fish. The word itself is like a mantra. Don’t even dare to mess up with this fish.

Now..is there any correlation or just coincidence between the used of word beta to the betta fish as fighting fish..I don’t know :D . All I know..I love my betta :)
