  1. she/he is about 6"-7" now. about 2" bigger since i got her about 5 months ago. and im sure she has packed on a good 1/4" in girth. lol she has always came to the front of the tank for my four year old daughter, but never for me until today. i will post some new pics of her. i have moved and changed her tank around since the last pics.

Excellent. The reason it's finger chasing is because it is comfortable. Good for you. :)

My big rhom is like a mean dog behind a fence.

  2. i have a 4"-5" black piranha and would like to create his natural enviroment as best as possible, so i have heard that using peat in my filter would be great for the ph and for my piranha. so my question is....has anyone used this and how much did it lower the ph?

Cool stuff... we got a rhom owner here! Woohoo!

It will only lower the ph in reverse osmosis water. Our water is too stable in the cities. I wouldn't worry about it anyway. They thrive on darker substrate and full floating plant coverage if it's possible. Temp betwwen 80-84. And rhom's that size, feed small amounts daily.

If you have any questions please feel free to pm me. I've been keeping a variety of p's off and on since the 80's. My rhom is 15".

  3. Nice Pat. Always great to see pictures of Titus- he's one of the more recognizable fish on here, and one of my all time favorites.

If anyone gets a chance to see him in person, go for it. :)

Thanks Darcy :D I will post more pics more often.

And yes, he likes when people come to visit. :smokey:

  4. I've got to ask; How did you make that background? That is sweet.

Alot of people have been asking me how I did this so I will explain..

Lay the tank on it's side...

Start applying the expanding foam...it's in can's called 'Great Stuff'...

build up your corners first how you want them... let dry.

It's best to make your foam lie down side to side... layering it.

    TIP:

If you want to get the foam to really expand, mist it with water.

Once that dried I then I drilled out holes for the filter tubes to fit in and be hidden... then i fit them in...

Next I foamed directly on the glass as well for the middle 4ft. I layed down thin ribbons of foam indiscriminately...

Have good control of how much is leaving the can... the ribbons should be slow and thin as you want to save as much tank space as possible width wise.

Once that dried then I mixed up my resin and did a liberal coat over the whole thing...

and then cover with a thick layer of sand....

came back the next day and wire brushed the sand off and had my texture...

Now I did two good coats of resin and let it dry.

    NEXT..

Masked off the the exposed glass..

    Paint... (spray bombs)

    Painted black first...

Then put the tank upright and painted from a standing position with some earth tones I liked. When you paint from a standing position the bumps dont recieve color on the under side so you have great shadow and really adds depth.

If you never used spray paint just mist it on about 2ft away.

Anyway once you color is done then you do very light coats of Acrylic clear coat spray. Be VERY patient here as it will wash out your color if it goes on to liberally, or 'wet' looking...

Just do light misty coats. Do as many as you want and it is ready to go.

I filled it 3x and let sit 24 hrs each time. You probably don't need to.

There are little things you can do I didn't mention... like what i used for tubing with the filter inserts but you can figure that out.

This can be done in 3 hours total. Not counting cure times

    That's it. :smokey:

Well done Pat! Glad to hear that the IV doser is working out as planned.

Here is a link to how I did the Auto Water Change:

  5. Awesome, is that a DIY background?

    Yes it is.

That is amazing. I am curious about the background as well......and the algae control.

I don't have hardly any algea at all because of the low nitrates.

    Glad you guys dig it.

    Hope you enjoy!

I do! It's a very moody tank with an awesome lone predatory fish. Have you considered trying to do a large school of cardinal tetras or something with him? It would look awesome, assuming of course he ignored them or snacked slowly.

I tried that and it was awesome to start but sadly he picked away at them. And there were ALOT. :( I'm going to go with Exodons next. I have one in there and he doesn't seem to even notice it.

  6. I completed this back in May and have been lazy posting pics. I did the background myself. My filters are plumbed into it so as to stay hidden. And I am running an auto-drip set-up from my plumbing under my kitchen sink. To neutralize the Chloramine I am dosing the water with an IV doser. I have pre-mixed cCloram-X that is keeping the water Chloramine free.

The auto-water change has been running for about 3 months that way and I have had nothing but trouble free joy.

    Hope you enjoy!

  7. I'm going to have to go against all the other advice....

I think you should buy the new fx5 and sell the two xp3's to me for the 108 gal..

Pros-- you'd have a brand new filter for your tank

I'd have two xp3's for my tank

Cons-- you'd have the outlay for a brand new filter

you wouldn't ask enough for the xp3's

Pros..(for me) I'd get a really good deal on a couple of xp3s

I may be wrong... but i think the pros outweigh the cons... (If I do happen to be wrong in my thinking... just ignore this post)

    Fred

Hey Fred! How are the fish coming along? You are a funny guy. If I sell you anything else you may get divorce papers. -roll-

  8. I have nothing against the FX5, in fact I have 2 of them on my 228 G tank, but I think its always a mistake to replace 2 filters with one. The reason being is that if 1 is all you have ,and that 1 craps out, you are often left with a major dilemna and even a loss of some, or all of your fish. All of my tanks have at least 2 filters. My 150 has 2 AC/500 and an XP3 filter so I am familiar with both types of filter. The FX5 is a very quiet filter for the volume of water that it pushes. Even with 2 of them on my 228 gal you can barely hear them.My honest opinion is that you won't get better filtration from 1 FX5 than you will from 2 XP3 and and at a price tag of around $300 it'll take a long time to get your money back in energy savings . That's all I gotta say about that.

    Great post. Excellent.
