  1. HI guys:

I am going to set up a 23 gal salt water tank(24" long tank) but not sure how much wattage of light

is enough to have corals in the tank.

i found a light fixture on ebay 24" long with 4x 24w t6 tubes.(2x 10000k & 2 actinic) Each pair of light bulbs have its power cord.

That means I can either have one pair of them turn on to get 48w or turn them all on to get 96watts.

With 96 wattage of light, that is like about 4 to 5 watts per gallon.

Would that be OK or its too bright?

Please someone give an advise on this.

    thx!

  2. Hi guys:

I am going to set up a 70 gal African Cichlid tank but not sure if I should use

crush coral or just pure black gravel.

I have used crush coral before but they turned little greenish once algae appeared in the tank.

I just wonder if pure black gravel would look good or not with mostly lava rocks stacking at the back of the tank and also black background.

Does anyone know where I can buy reasonably cheap bulk black gravel in Calgary?

  3. Hi

    I need help.

I've spoted some fine hair like lines on the leaves of some of the plants but not sure if they are algae or not. They are no longer than half a cm.

    Any ideas?

If they are algae then what to do to stop them from spreading...

    thanks

  4. Hi

Can someone advise me where I can buy some substrate ferts - like Jobe or any other brand?

And, What should I look for on the label?

I guess Jobe's substrate ferts should be a lot cheaper than the Seachem Flourish tabs, right??

The other question is: I noticed most of my stem plants are growing plenty of side roots and I wonder why??

    thanks,

    Sam

  5. I am currently using a 120w powercompact light and pressurzied co2 system in my 70gal. tank.

Plants are doing fine but I am thinking about switching to a 240w powercompact light so I can put some high light plants in my tank.

I don't know what the co2 concentration is my tank right now.

What i want to know is....If I switch to a 240w light then Do I also need to increase the input amount of co2? What will likely to happen if i don't increase the co2 level?

What test kit is good for testing ph and kh to find out the co2 level? Is Lamott any good?

    Thanks!

  6. Hi,

I bought a Hagen CO2 diffuser recently. it doesn't do very good.

Can someone tell me what kind of diffuser, reactor or ...... is most effective way

to dissolve co2 into the water? And where I can purchase this item?

Also, What is the best and economic ph and kh test kits I can buy?

    thanks,

    Samgoody

  7. i had this tank running for 1 & a half year but just adding plants since Feb. Its a 70 gal.(48" wide) tank with 1 power glo and 1 aqua glo(total of 80w) for lighting(leave on for about 10-12 hours a day), i have a few crypts, a few java ferns and 1 anubias, i use flourish iron and flourish once a week.

I am not sure if its because I don't have enough plants or too much fert., or too much light.......

    any thoughts?
