  1. Hi I thought about putting them in my shrimp tank as well since they don't eat the shrimp. Are the shrimplets going to be safe too? If yes, is a 30g tank big enough for 2 or 3 Oto's? I'll have to look into these zebra oto...sounds nice! Thanks for the info:)
  2. I'm looking for an algae eater. The otocinculus seem to be the cutest one I've seen so far. I don't want a pleco, they scare me. Do oto's actually eat algae? If yes, what types of algae do they eat? Do they get along with corydoras, shrimp, gourami and tetras? If yes, which are the best variation to buy? The cuter, the better, lol. Yes, I know, girly comment...... Thanks for your help:)
  3. Since I moved my bottom feeders out of my shrimp tank, I've noticed some very small planaria. They are bothering my shrimp! How do I get rid of them without harming my shrimp and shrimplets? I read about using fenbendazole but I'm not a medication advocate and worry about the side effects. I also heard that otocinculus eat planaria...but then, wouldn't they eat shrimplets too? I don't think I'm overfeeding my shrimp, they get fed every second day. I have found it more difficult to gravel vac though with all the baby shrimplets, so I know that's not helping with the planaria situation. Any advice on the meds or any other tried successful methods? Thanks in advance:)
  4. Thanks for the advice guys, I think I will slowly lower the temperature a couple of degrees.
  5. My red rhino shrimp eat it, just not fast enough. As for my amano's....well, if they would just get off my drift wood for a second, maybe they would eat it too! I notice that my bamboo shrimp fan like crazy after I rub the algae off the leaves. Hmmmm, well hopefully it goes away soon, my plants are starting to really suffer from it. Thanks for the input.
  6. In the last couple of weeks there has been a brown algae bloom in my freshwater tank. It's brownish-orange and when you rub it, it's like dust in the water (know what I mean?) Fairly new set up (3 months). It seems to be suffocating some of my plants and hornwort is dying off! Yes, HORNWORT! Lol....I'm trying like heck to keep the algae off all my leafy plants, arrrghhh!! 140g FX5 filtration 10 hours of light Two, 55 watt G11 lamps(hood has a reflector mirror) Fert with Seachem Flourish- 2.5 capful per week Weekly water change of 40% Always add de-chlor and Stability bacteria starter No CO2 Airstone(not sure if that's relevant, lol) Hope I didn't leave out any info?..... Is this common to a new set up? I've never had this issue before with other tanks. Please give me some advice... Thanks in advance!
  7. I have moved all my fish into a bigger tank and now just use my 30g as a shrimps tank. I have green and red cherry and crystal red's. The tank temp at the moment is 79F, because of the fish I had before. Just wondering if that is too warm for these shrimp. One of the cherry shrimp did have babies a couple of months ago but not much action since then. Thanks in advance!
  8. No salt required for cherries and crystal red's to breed successfully.
  9. you're breeding amanos? In fresh water? :boxed: Cherries are producing babies. Amano's are laying eggs....not bothering with harvesting the eggs and doing the saline hatching.
  10. I witnessed our assassin snail killing a seemingly healthy cherry shrimp. (I monitor the shrimp for a couple of hours each day and they were all acting and eating normally) I did not see the initial "attack" but the cherry shrimp was twitching and shaking and it was being devoured by the snail. I plucked the snail off of it but it was already too late. RIP cherry shrimp:( Thought that the shrimp would have been too quick for a snail so I am of coarse shocked and sad to see what happened. I also thought with all the different snails we have that he would have more than enough easy prey. I put the assassin snail in our 140g where it won't be able to harm anything small. What I really felt like doing was gutting the stupid thing and feeding it to my amano's...but luckily for it, my love for living things returned before I could do it, lol. For the record, all tank parameters are great and our amano's and cherries are breeding....no previous reported deaths at all. Anyway, I know there is a debate over this but I'm just saying what I saw. Maybe the shrimp was sleeping when it happened? Poor thing...
  11. Nature's Corner is open at their new location and I saw some blue dwarf gourami there last week.
  12. Very attractive set up. I especially love all the mosses!
  13. Yeah, I don't want my beautiful cardinals to end up as snacks so I don't think I'm going to chance it. Unless, there is a type of angel that doesn't get really big? Anyone know?
  14. I have a 140g with various tetras, gourami, glass cats, corydoras, m & f betta and rock shrimp. There are also may plants in the tank. Is it possible to keep a couple of angelfish peacefully in there? So far, the bettas are doing great with the other fish and no one is fighting. Maybe I'm pushing my luck with wanting to add the angels and I won't do it unless I get positive feedback. Just want to hear some opinions from those of you that have kept them or if certain types are better in a community tank. Please, I want to know if any of you have mature angelfish in a community tank, not just young ones(I know many fish will show aggression when they get older and I don't want to have to get rid of it later). Thanks for your help!! Capri
  15. Wow, thanks for the fast reply!! Good stuff, thanks!
  16. Hiya, I have never put fertilizer in my shrimp tank before and want to know if it's safe for my Amano and Cherry shrimps. I have Java fern and Java Moss in there right now and the Java fern isn't growing like it used to. I have Seachem Flourish(liquid) but only want to use it if it's safe for the shrimp. Thanks in advance
  17. Are you talking about fish or ornaments/plants/wood? If the latter, go to PetSmart. Buy some plants (they are really cheap there). If you just want greenery, go for Hornwort. It grows like a weed. They have some decent sword plants there as well. Or check out the swap/trade section of the forum...I noticed some members with plants to trade or sell for cheap. If you're looking for some rocks, wait until spring, go down to the river and pick out some nice ones. Not sure if you're allowed to do that, but I won't tell ;p. If you want some drift wood, go to Aqua Giant, that was the cheapest I could find. I found that their driftwood was fairly light in weight so you don't get charged as much compared to buying Mopani which is very heavy. Or look on Kijiji, there's always a deal to be found there. Good luck..don't know if that helps or not.
  18. I don't know if it was alive or dead. I only saw him pick it apart until the shell was empty. Strange though, I've never seen mine do this before.
  19. Just witnessed my Amano shrimp digging a snail out of it's shell bit by bit and eating it! It was just a plain old pond snail, not sure what kind. Another Amano became interested in what he was carrying and chased him around the tank for it but he didn't relent it. He was digging at it furiously and emptied it out! I didn't know they did this? Has anyone else had the same experience?
  20. Lol, oops, ok so maybe 3 days felt like a week! Sorry, I posted my comment here before I read your email explanation. Thank you for responding.
  21. Ok great! I wasn't sure because it says that the rock shrimp get to be 4'' and I didn't want them to bully the smaller cherry shrimp. I'm excited to get some, they look really neat but I want to wait until my tank is more established first. Tonight I was really happy to see some baby shrimps in my 30g!!! I can't tell if they're amano or cherries because they are so small but I guess I won't have to buy any for my 140g now!!!!!! First time breeding shrimp, I'm super excited, can you tell?Lol. Vampire shrimp..hmmm, sounds interesting!
  22. That's not good! Anytime (that I'm aware of) if a shrimp turns pink, it's dead or near death. A moult will look see-through. If it's a solid pinky/orange, it's a dead shrimp. Take it out and examine it to know for sure. Normally when shrimp eat wood, their colours may enhance and turn a bit reddish but I think in your case, there's a problem. Have you tested your water for ammonia? Shrimp are very sensitive to ammonia and cannot tolerate it at all. Good luck!
  23. Hi, Why did the validation process take so long? I joined the forum and had to wait almost a week before I could post anything. That's some back round check lol. Just thought it might deter some people away.....unless it was just a glitch? Anyway, glad to be accepted!
  24. Hi I've seen these shrimp at PetSmart. They are labeled as Rock Shrimp but I've also heard them called Flower Shrimp. They basically sit by the current and catch food particles with what looks like a furry star, lol...don't know how to describe it. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has had them and what you think about them. (Requirements, preferences, etc..) I have a 140g community tank with tetras, gourami and corydoras. Will these shrimp be ok? Now, what if I want to add cherry and amano shrimp...will the Rock Shrimp eat the other shrimp? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance
