1. i must say youre crazy lol. what kind of fish are you breeding in the other tank? i'd say arowana then youd be rich lol. or large cichlids. Quinn Hey Quinn I'm going to try my hand at breeding Motoro Sting Rays. As far as the S. formosus goes, I've thought about it for a few years now. The problem with them is the existing availible gene pool is already becoming weak and since obtaining legal wild specimens would be nothing short of near impossible... that eliminated them from the big picture.
2. One of the problems for me with breeding O. ferreirai would be the distribution of the fry.
3. Never; this guy is part of my private collection.
4. I have these two cement tanks in my fish room that are 40,000 gallons each. One of them I'm using for a breeding program. But the other one I'm not exactly sure what I want to do. I'm thinking plant tank; swords, crypts and hygro. I think a community tank would be awesome with schools of many different tetras or barbs. http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/Will...guy/Will032.jpg Thing about these tanks is that they can only be viewed from above, so viewing fish like cichlids would be very limited, but I'm thinking that 500 cardinals would look pretty sweet swimming from one end to the other. What would you do? I'd really love to hear all you ideas.
5. I highly doubt that....so, why so terrified of disclosing where you got the fish, hmmm? Dude, seriously, where I get my fish is none of your business, so please, back off.
6. Makes one wonder if you actually have any others...don't worry, I will not think any less of you if you do not. What you wonder or think, means absolutely nothing to me.
7. Who cares...name them anyway. That include people? .... Naa, I have no desire sharing information about the filters I use that are not relevant to this thread. It would depend on what they did to me to piss me off. Like if something was done or said to compromise the health and wellbeing of my children, then sure, I'd smash them to bits.
8. Rather bizarre what? And I was born on the same day as Einstein, and though that doesn't make me smart; I am weird and hard to understand sometimes. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ripost Seems to me Toitiris went through a bit of trouble to answer your question. Why leave it unfinished? You've got ME wondering what kind of lung fish you have now! :smokey: Toitie is incorrect on all accounts as to where I obtained this fish, but with the help of a few friends I've come to the conlusion that it is not a P. dolloi, and more then likely not a P. annectens sp., which is all rather exciting news!

10. The trim does not have any structural significance. If you take if off and there is water in the tank, eveything will be fine. Just becareful not to shell the glass. Other then an Olfa type knife, keep any metal tools off the glass. If using a metal tool to help pry off the trim, be sure to keep a piece of rubber or plastic between the tool and the glass. If you need info on running a silicone bead, just say so and I'll describe how I do it for you. The silicone, though it has a strong vinegar smell to it, will not harm the fish. If any drips down in the water, scoop it up with a net. If you're using clear silicone, give it at least three days to skin over and if you're using black, give it seven days to skin over before topping the tank off. This is not a structural job, so no need to wait any longer for drying time.
11. I'm sure someone else could benefit (as well as some fish) if you were to sell the next piece of equipment that pisses you off instead of being so wasteful. mmm no, I didn't and still don't consider that act wasteful, but the right thing to do. I would never give a piece of garbage to someone else, but I instead put it where it belongs.
12. Eheim, I am sure, but I am curious as to the other two...surely not Rena? I'm not really a fan of Rena, though clearly it has a god future ahead of it and I'm interested to see how future models of this filter develop. The other two are canisters that provide functions that Eheim does not. Which is why I only recommend the Eheim for biological and basic mechanical filtration. The other two are not pertinent to this thread's topic. In saying all this, many people do not have Eheim as an option and make the best out of inferior products. People who have success with Fluval or Cascade don't do so because the filters are good, they do so because of their own desire to make the filter work for them. Me on the other hand, I don't even have the patience to return a 5 week old piece of crap Cascade to Diana, instead I smash it to bits (like everything else that pisses me off) and throw it in the dumpster. So if you can make a Cascade or a Fluval work well and keep fish alive and healthy with them, then kudos to you, you're a better fish keeper than me.
13. Not really, no. Mighty big of you, but I know just fine, thanks. I am curious as to why you cannot disclose where you got yours from, actually...seems a bit cloak and dagger. Suffice it to say that almost all the lungs that have been in area shops over the past three years have been dolloi, with the exception of two batches of two Protopterus annectans annectans each that Gold had in, two P. annectans sp. (unsure of the subspecies) that were in Pisces about 22 months ago(and a number of Lepidosiren that have been scattered amongst Calgary stores). As far as I am aware, not one Protopterus aethiopicus aethiopicus (or P. a. congicus or P. a. mesmaekersi for that matter) has been in any Alberta store in the past 5 years. Nope, I didn't get it from any of those places, thanks for responding though. I'll check else where.
14. Oto cats are not big on eating green algae, but prefer diatoms and other micro-organisms, but they are awesome little fish and I'm sure you'll like the addition to your tank. I'm thinking that it is more of a fish waste production thing and or your feeding patterns. Gravel, rocks and wood could also add nutrients that is helping the algae poliferate. If a tank with plecos has wood in it, the plecos (many species) will eat the wood and the stuff that grows on it, inturn creating an abundance of waste. If the gravel is coarse, food and fish waste will get down into it, building up nutrients that the algae uses.
15. Nothing that I can type out quickly...I will see if I can scan a the pertinants of a couple of taxonomic papers on the subject. Do the papers have an answer that is quicker to type then the answer in your head that would take you a long time to type out? Or do you just not know? If you don't know, it's ok, I will not think any less of you. Actually, if you tell me who had what and when, I'll easily be able to pick it out from them.
16. You must not have much volume experience with both, then...the Cascades are far better physical quality (over the Fluval '04 and '05 series...the '02 and '03 were actually pretty good) and much easier to use. I am constantly ordering parts for the newer Fluval canisters, particularly handles, impeller covers, impeller shafts and impellers. I like Aquaclears...love them even....but they are generally inferior to canisters for planted tanks. I have enough experience to know that both Penn Plax and Fluval products suck, regardless of the Fluval series. Infact, I know they suck so bad that I would never sell them or use them for my own fish tanks. As far as canisters go, there are only three readily availible brands that exist in my world and they are neither Penn plax or Fluval.
17. Thanks for the welcome! There is a great article at http://www.loaches.com/articles/hillstream...n-the-fast-lane that shows how to create one-way flow without drilling holes in the tank. If you want to share more ideas we should probably move to the appropriate forum but I have some great, inexpensive ideas to make the thing rock! Deborah I really like that site and the filter idea, though I can't use it, I think it really rocks. My river tank idea is a display tank and I have to have all equipment out of the tank, including the heater. I'm also a glass worker so drilling holes in glass is second nature to me. I too have what I think (lol) are some good ideas and agree that we should move to the proper place and hopefully others will join in on the info action. I sounded a bit egotistical didn't I :& (sorry I am new at this). No not at all, you sound very creative. I (lol) because I really don't think about designs but imagine them and I thought that maybe you do too. Which is kinda funny because instead of saying I have a lot of creative visions/ideas I say 'I think'. :smokey:
18. There are measurements, but nothing done easily with a live specimen. If you can remember where and when you got him, it could also help, as most of the proptopterus that have come into Alberta over the past 3 years have been P. dolloi and P. annectans....and I just happen to be familiar with who had what when. M.Sc. and UC. Nothing scientific in regard to their identification? It doesn't have to be easy, just reliable. I can't tell you where I got it, but if you tell me who had what and when I can pick it out of those.
19. Incorrect, they own the name...all the prairie Petlands (again, save Lerhbridge and Medicine Hat) are owned by a single franchisee...Petland Calgary (aka Petland Superstores)...they pay franchise fees and a percentage to the Canadian office, but that is it. Not controlling, but they own a hefty percentage, from leverage the franchisee needed for expansion. 1) Not rumours...I play cards with Dieter; 2) They do not want that much control...stores that sell only one brand do poorly. Funny...even the trade pubs state that Hagen owned Superpet...I guess that they have no idea what they are talking about....good thing you do. I'm wrong, my bad.
20. Yeah, they all look pretty much the same, to me, at that age, but thanks anyway. I was hoping for a scale count or something like that. Hey, I was wondering, do you have a M.Sc. or a Ph.D.? And where did you get it? UofV, UBC, UoG or SFU?
21. As much as don't like Hagen products, they are superior to PennPlax. I've used all three of the Cascade lines and both the canister and the HOB went into the garage within a year of use. The canister went into the dumpster 5 weeks after it was purchased. I'll never use them again. The Aquaclear on the other hang is Hagens biggest blunder, in that it works so well, that making models obsolete every 5 years like the Fluval line can't be done, because everyone that has ever used one knows that it really can't be improved on and still maintain the cheap price. So I give  for the Aquaclear, I suggest not using it the way Hagen says to use it.
22. Welcome Back! Thank you, Flying High.
23. Incorrect. All of the Petlands in Alberta (save Lethbridge and Medicine Hat), Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as a couple in BC, are owned by Petland Superstores, which is based in Calgary, and has Bob Doerkson at its head (Hagen has a percentage ownership in the chain as well). I believe that Hagen now has a controlling percentage in PJ's, which was a part of the PJ's/Superpet chain, the latter half of which was sold by Hagen to Petsmart earlier this year (Pets Unlimited on the East coast is also mixed into this group of shops, but has been retained). Robert and Barbara Brissette own Petland Canada which includes all the Petlands this side of BC, they live in Manitoba. The BC stores are franchise stores responsible to the Brissettes. The office in Calgary is Petland Alberta's head office, it is not the head office of Petland Canada. The only controlling percentage Hagen has in Petland Alberta is their yet-to-be-paid-for products. If Hagen had as much control as the rumors have lead you to believe, Cichlid would not have grown as big as they have since taking on Petland as an account. PJ's Pet Centres is a privately own company; by (P)eter Marrol with 19 Stores across Canada. They have a sister company called Pets Unlimited. The SuperPet stores were owned by the other half of PJ's, (J)ohn Jewls and are now Petsmarts. Superpet is not and never has been PJ's, but is a company created by John Jewls after splitting from the PJ's. Not trying to hijack this thread, so this is my last comment here about this subject. If you'd like to continue this else where, pm me and I give you Rob and John's email address so you can confirm my information.
