  1. So my 2 month old 10 gallon soft coral tank's live rock have begun bleaching a few days ago.

The rocks are slowly turning white and the coraline algae is disappearing.

Anyone else every experience live rock bleaching and if so, what is that cause?

    Thanks

Just did my first water change today. Made my own RO/DI saltwater for the first time.

    Let's see how things go.

    I WANT MORE CORALS!

    (Sorry for the dark photos...)

And my Green Star Polyps (though not so green) and Blue Clove Polyps

  3. I need help on identifying this life form.

I hope it isnt what it is.... an Aiptasia.

If it is, how would I go about killing and removing it?

Peppermint Shrimp? Where would be the best place to acquire these?

    Thanks!

For the past few months I have been edging to being a new saltwater tank. I have been doing lots of research and trying to dig up as much information as I can before I drove in.

So a few days ago, I finally took the plunge.

There is about 12 lbs of live rock and about 8 lbs of live sand.

Currently using Koralia Nano 425 powerhead for current.

I plan to mod my AquaClear 50 box with a AquaClear 20 motor into a macro algae refugium.

My vision for this tank will be to have about 2-3 fish, a cleaner shrimp, and maybe a couple Turbo Snails. But my main focus will be on corals. Currently looking at soft corals like Zoanthids and Xenias.

So that is my current setup and please offer me any constructive criticisms.

    Thanks for looking!

Just thought I would update this as I have not done so in a long time.

    Picture as of today.

    7611692846_988288515c_z.jpg

    Fauna:

    2 Black Marble Angle Fish

    1 Otocinclus

    5 Amano Shrimp

    ?? Red Cherry Shrimp

    Flora:

Front: Hemianthus Callitrichoides 'Cuba' (Dwarf Baby Tears)

    Middle: Pogostemon Helferi (Downoi)

Back: Eleocharis Acicularis (Dwarf Hair Grass)

    Equipment:

Tank: ADA Cube Garden 45-P 45X27X30

    Light: Sunblaster 24W T5HO

    CO2: None

    Filter: Eheim 2217

So other than a Amano Shrimp jumper two months ago, things have been good. Light period has been cut down to about 4 hours a day and water changes occur once every 1.5 months. No CO2 injections and only weekly dose of Excel.

  6. Flourish Excel, so does that mean you were missing some nutrients before you started dosing? If so, which nutrient do you think it might be?

I believe the HC were not getting enough CO2 as my CO2 is a DIY one. So with the addition of Excel, they may be getting a better amount of carbon! :D

  7. Thanks for all your suggestions.

So I went out and purchased some Excel and oh my, what a turn around.

Here is a shot of the HC at its most brown point:

Took this shot a few days ago.

You can't really tell from the photo but my HC is not as green as I want it to be. There are some leaves that are starting to turn brown.

I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me.

I am currently using a 24W 6400K T5HO on this. Fertilizes NPK and micro minerals.

Lights were on for 6 hours but have been reduced to 4 hours because of the browning (I thought maybe they were getting too much light so I reduced them about a week ago)

    Thanks!

Just wanted to do a quick update today. Just took this picture and it seems I may need to trim soon.

Any suggestions on keeping the HC lower and more dense?

    Thanks!

P.S. ignore the heater and filter please haha.

Waiting for my Lily Pipes and gotta find a solution to hide the heater.... :S

  10. any plan to do it in Calgary?

Yes, scheduled for November at the Pisces Pets Emporium. I will announced it here when it is firmed up.

Did I miss this? How's the seminar?

The seminar was awesome. Learnt some really good tips and tricks. Had plenty of questions answered.

All in all, it was a fantastic experience. I really enjoyed it.

Also, Mr. Joseph (Miyabi_Aqua) is a really awesome guy as well.

    Looking forward to more events.
