  1. I'm guessing once the eggs were fertilized the females body swelled/got fat. Once the eggs were deposited you separated them, but did you give them any special treatment? Antifungal meds? increased temp? Thanks in advance, i have a lot of questions!
  2. Did they pair off in a group, or did you just throw a male and female together? Whats the name of the book written by Dr. Kodera?
  3. Arowanas can almost all the time be trained to take pellets, although some species are much pickier. I can understand snubbing flake food though. For now, i'd just suggest being persistant with introducing it to different foods. Right now, i have an RTG that i'm trying to nurse back to health. It hasn't eaten for about 4 weeks (2 with the previous owner and 2 with me). So they can go a long time without food.
  4. Theoretically, if you transfer all filters, decor and substrate, you sould be able to add fish in right away without having any spikes. The amount of biofiltration is relative to the bioload in the tank. So, if you transfer all the stuff from the 55 to the 180 and add the same fish then nothing should change. I did that with my 55-180 transfer. Added all the filters, substrate and stuff and then threw in all the fish without considering cycling at all. No matter how much media you put in the 55g now, it will still be proportional to current bioload. So, if you stuff your tank with sponge, lava rock , ceramic rings, it won't let you add more fish to the 180g. I hope i made some sense. For the W/D i'd suggest nylon pot scrubbers from you dollar store. If the media will be submerged i suggest lava rock or ceramic rings. http://www.wernersponds.com/biofiltermedia.htm
  5. all asian aros are chipped due to their CITES status
  6. The fish was only ~6", i'm not too squeemish so i don't mind eating noodles made in a pot that just boiled a pet fishes head. I lost my green aro a few days ago. I was mega choked about it, but like always, i keep souvenirs from fish that meant a lot to me. I gutted the aro for its microchip.
  7. I find general consensus for minimum arowana tank sizes is as follows blacks - 6 X 2 X 2 - 180g asians - 6 X 2 X 2 australians (jardinis and leichartdi) - 6 X 2 X 2 silvers - 6 X 30"wide X 2 <--even that would cramp a full grown silver, IMO that would barely be the bare minimum. Ideally 3' wide and 8' length, but tanks with that width are uncommon. african - I'm not too familiar with them, but i believe 6 X 2 X 2 may suffice, but i;ve seen them 30" so maybe larger.
  8. Boiled it to soften the flesh and used toothpicks and fine tweezers. Boil again and repeat. Did that a couple times until there was no flesh left
  9. Try aquarank.com, generally the forums dedicated to predatory fish have many members with tanks in the range of hundreds of gallons, even thousands. I find aquaticpredators has the best knowledge base. Theres actually a thread in the DIY section right now dealing with custom building concrete tanks.
  10. Here are a few shots i took while dissecting this p. e. endlicheri. Cause of death- asphixiation from blockage of throat due to ingested gravel I also kept its skull
  11. You should try to expand its diet. Crickets and mealworms are known to be extremely addictive, if you feed an exclusive cricket diet your aro will most likely reject everything else and also suffer from loss of nutrients from other foods. I find that sometimes arowanas will go through hunger strikes, and become picky with their foods, but it usually goes away once they realize they are really hungry. If your jardini rejects live crickets you may have a problem
  12. Nice, thanks for the info. One day, when i have the time and money, i'll try my lukc at breeding endlicheris. Thanks !
  13. I'm not planning on breeding bichirs anytime soon, but it seems to be a very common question asked on some forums. As far as i can remember, Christian, you've bred ornates. I'd just like to know how you accomplished it. Thanks.
  14. Hey Christian, why aren't you hanging around AP anymore?
  15. Thanks for the welcome all, got here from J-rocs sig on bcaquaria.com
