  1. Buy the refills at canadian tire. It is half the price of Fluval.

Or buy an adjustor and hook up a 20 oz to the Fluval connector .

I read somewhere the threading on the canadian tire ones arent the same- is it true? if so, how do you rig it? what does an adjustor look like? I saw some CO2 thingies on kijiji for paintballing- is that what you mean?

  2. yeah, this big ugly diffuser is not normal- not that I know anything- but, i did some reading on it and apparently your supposed to let the bells fill up, turn it off, let it disipate in a few hours do it a gain a few times a day.

here is a link to pictures- im sorry about the quality- I really did try to get decent ones. the top 5- the ones with the most plants- are the most recent. http://s1238.photobucket.com/albums/ff492/yashaviolet/fish%20stuff/

  3. Sorry, that took so long to respond. Il will see if I can get a pic asap

I was only turning the co2 on for a bit out of cheapness really. I knew there wasnt much left... and now I have none :(

as for excel, I did maybe 1/8th of a teaspoon once or twice. I had read it can be dangerous for crypts so I didnt want to put too much. I have two types of moss and crypts and they are fine. the crypts did have a hole in it though but that was a while ago and they appear fine now

the new growth is a nice green but is transparent in places.

  4. I have the fluva flora set up. its 7.9 gallon tank, 13 watt florecent bulb w/ a reflector. I have seachem flourish and excel, another liquid nutrifin micro nutrients suppliment, and c02. I've been leaving the ligths on from 8ish am to about the same time in the evening give or take and only having the c02 barely on for an hour or so. I did have them in worse lighting until a few weeks ago (1 wpg), and I did try the miracle gro plant stakes before reading about them... :I

the new growth is green- all small but most of the older/longer stuff is dead now. the nitrate and nitrite tests were through the roof and I did a huge water change.

I had a 30 gallon planted with vals a couple years back- did dry ferts and seachem tabs unfaithfully- bought lights from a hydroponics store and they tookover the tank. I've never had this kind of troube before and to be honest I wanted just a very lush and pretty small underwater garden that I could keep with low maintenance :(

  5. I have always had the black backgrounds you buy... it didn't even cross my mind that it would do that (duh!). but I liked the look of it and I DONT want to disturb everything again :( I wonder about the slate thing- but then, I would lose even more water volume :( unless I took the water level REALLy low, and dried and siliconed most of the background back...? but then my poor plants and trying to push that sand out of the way.... and I would have to buy silicone.

  6. You're pretty much hooped. Honestly, if you try to secure it weakly again you're looking for trouble. Many owners have had their lights and/or lids break as a result of the backgrounds shooting up.

I have an EBI and I secured my background with a few more beads of fish-safe silicone. That will require you emptying it...

Look on the bright side: at least now you have slightly more water capacity in your tank - and that means slightly less work. ;)

Ill be honest. I dont really like your response. :) I have black arcrylic canvas paint. maybe that will have to due until I get ambitious enough to redo the tank.

  7. Bought a used fluval flora (price was great!).. but the background was detatched. didnt think anything of it... until the sand stopped holding it down... and my plants and everthing shifted as it popped up... I dont want to take everything out and glue it down... I'd have to take the sand out too :( is there anyway to secure it again (maybe even cutting it to just below the sand surface so I dont have to mess with the sand too much) with everyone still in it?

  8. Just thought I'd update for those whao may be curious. I took him back to NC and got a different male and another female- and two ottos, and a ghost shrimp and thus far everyone is doing great. Seems like I just bought a meanie. The tank was a 5 gallon (I think) but they are all in a 7.9 gallon fluval flora that (Lord-willing), will be heavily planted one day.

  9. Hi all was hoping you guys could tell me what I bought...

and what is the best way to get them to grow as much as possible? I have the fluval flora kit, florish, root tabs.

Have no idea how to do C02, or if I even really want to. is there anyway I can rig the c0s thing into the flter so I dont have to use the ugly diffuser? is it even worth the effort? going to get excel too and maybe just use that. I would like it as low tech/ natural but lush with plants as possible.

    :) thanks

  10. I've grown most aquatic plants in playsand and other inert substrates that can be purchased from Home Depot and sandblasting suppliers for a fraction of expensive specialty substrates.

I have a journal thread of my planted 120gal, and it's just a mix of playsand and black sand. 5" depth cost about $50; if I just went with playsand, it would have cost about 1/2 that much.

where is the cheapest place to buy the black sand?

  11. My new male at my full grown female ghost shrimp  and is forever chasing the female gouramis around. should I be worried, is this normal. I was hoping once the plants grew in it would stip. was also going to see about etting some duckweed or something for a surface plant.

attached is a pic of the tank (in case there are suggestions on how to make it more accomidating- if that is the issue).http://s1238.photobucket.com/albums/ff492/yashaviolet/fish%20stuff/?action=view&current=DSC04271.jpg
