  1. Quick question, I have a 3 gallon tank being filtered in my house and I was wondering what is a good moss to add? Going to add a marimo moss ball for sure, but its colder water with not heater so I can't do java moss I think. I am using gravel in the tank. Moss will be attached to a piece of decor or drift wood.
  2. This kit is VERY well known. On kickstarter, it raised more then double its goal.
  3. OK, what heater is good for this pool? I need a heater ASAP as it is like, 70f-ish. My tank has a air temp of 75-80 and I have a bubbler in the water right now. Going to petsmart tomorrow to buy a filter (tetra internal for small tanks or about 2.5-4 gallons I think). I used them in my betta tanks so I think it will work. Should I add a heater? And is a marimo moss ball good with shrimp? I am looking to add one. I want it to be colder as my hermit crabs prefer cold fresh water.
  4. Okay, no added co2 producer? I often go on vacations where I am gone for a week or two. I could set a light on a timer, but do I instruct the care taker to add a special amount of excel? Or should I get a small CO2 producer? I might have a spare bit of cash to shell out for a pressured system. I LOVE cuba as a carpet but is it good for newbies? Is there anything that looks like sheet moss that I could use?
  5. I do a lot of work and this stresses me out. Seeing as I find fish keeping relaxing, I think a planted tank sounds fun! I have a 10 gallon that I will use. No nothing for the tank yet. Thinking of adding some bright cherry shrimp in as well (for colour). I like carpeting plants like cubas and fine hair. I can do trimming as needed. I want a small park with a tree look, using java moss as a "leaf" on a drift wood tree. Maybe a path of black gravel down the tank as a "road" with a carpet all around as grass. Some nice low - medium plants in the background is good. Do not want a java moss carpet though. I have a $200 budget for plants, substrate, decor and equipment. No budget on other animals. I might add two male guppies as well. No other fish. Just RCS and guppies. Equipment does not included foods and other stuff for he animals. I am looking at a 40 watt light, as the tank is 12 inches tall (I think). Black substrate for the tank is a need. My end budget (absolute max) is $350. I have the tank so that saves me a few toonies. Lots of green plants is a want as well. Can you guys help?
  6. Ok, trying to add a heater to my 3g pool. It is very chilly right now as my crab tank is at 74f but it hits the high 70's and low 80's in the day. I am going to convert my 10 gallon tank in my room into a nice cherry shrimp tank. I need to see how I like the shrimp before adding to the pool. I have a large spot on my dresser for the tank and I am trying to get stuff ready. I will be takin pics of the current tank right now but I have a leak in my water fall so I am trying to patch that. I know a guy in the states is building a 750+ hermit crab tan with I think 80 gallon salt water pool, 30 gallon fresh and a 10 gallon brackish for fiddler crabs. It's very cool how people do this
  7. I have a few tanks from my current crustacean pets (hermit crabs, once in a 25 gallon, now in a 165 gallon) so I decided to get into fish and shrimp. I am turning an old 10 gallon into a cherry shrimp tank and my 25 gallon into a tropical tank. I have owned guppies and bettas in the past, but I got rid of them a while ago as I got caught up in school. Seeing as I am not as busy anymore, I am getting back in! I am even doing a 3 gallon shrimp tank in my hermit crab tank! I joined here for fish advice :3
  8. Things I forgot to add: I am making a sponge filter for the tank as well. With an airstone, air pump, tubing, aquarium filter sponge, and a a tube of plastic with the top and bottom cut off as well as holes in the piece. Just a typical DIY filter. I use dechlor water for it as well. I use API water treatment. No added salts or anything. I do %25 water changes weekly right now and a %100 change once a month because my crabs spill a LOT of stuff into the pool.
  9. So I have a 3 gallon fresh water tank in the middle of my 165 gallon hermit crab tank. Sound wierd, but what shrimp would go good in the pool? I used a new and clean kritter keeper for the pool. It is lined with unpainted gravel and has a fake plant in it. I have a few water proof reptile bio-vines in there so my crabs can go in and out. My guys only go in there sometimes so I was looking at adding shrimp. I know it is safe as MANY hermit crab owners have shrimp in there large water pools. It is 12x7.5x8.
  10. I think the bad thing is, they are marketing this to people who know nothing about fish. I think if you know stuff about fish, this is OK, but for a starter this is not good. I think that if you have a say, 50 gallon tank for aquaponics its OK. Goldfish seem great for this thing as the amount of waste they give off is a ton. But only in a large system.
  11. So I came about this aquaponics kit, it supposedly filters out harmful things from a fish tank and uses it for plants. I looked at one major kit on kickstarter and it seems in NO way good for any fish! It looks like maybe 2 gallons of space (5 at tops)! Thats okay for shrimp but I don't think any fish would live a happy life in it. A betta would be able to live in it if it was designed differently to allow for air but they are showing guppies I think in the tank. Here is the link: store.backtotheroots.com/product_p/aquaponics.htm So what do you guys and gals think of this?
