  1. Sorry it's been so long since replying to this topic... Just figured I'd throw this out there... You raised a good point, khobbs, and I have over the past few months thought about it and would prefer to set up a more natural looking tank (since I haven't managed to get mine set up yet), IF I can find a buyer for my holey rock. The being said, if anyone is interested in buying it, feel free to let me know. The only caveat is that you would have to buy the whole lot - 150 lbs, at $3/lb (the same amount I paid for it).

  2. My 120 is 72x19x19. Just building the stand, and then on to setting it up. Unfortunately, I will not have the tank ready in time for the auction. But at least I can connect with others and makes contacts for fish when my tank is ready!

  3. Another option is to plug your heater into a thermostat (or temperature controller, as some prefer to call it). You set your heater at a higher temperature, and then your thermostat at the temperature you want to achieve. Your heater will run until the thermostat turns it off. The problem, I have heard, with heaters is that their temperature gauges are not as accurate as something like a thermostat.

Apart from that, in-line heaters are awesome.

Also, look into circulation in your entire tank. If your circulation is poor, you will have warm and cool spots.

  4. I have used Renas historically, and I have loved them. I have one XP2 that has seen well over 6 years of service now, no issues whatsoever. I have heard that the XP4s struggle, but I think you would do great with an XP3.

I just acquired an Ehiem 2080 Pro3 for my 120 gallon, haven't started using it yet, but let me tell you, there is room for a TON of media! And it is in baskets, not a problem. The big problem with the Eheims is the price. I was lucky and got the filter and media half price (still $420).

I have had no experience with Fluvals as of yet, but I hear good things.
