Nice looking tank!
I usually space the hole closer together the further they are from the intake. Can;t remember the exact drill bit but it think it was around 1/8" inch holes, every 2" or so on both sides and than around every inch on the furthest section. i like to try to do a bit of a loop or are least two sections to cover more ground I do my holes on the sides vs the top and pack that area full of filter media.Slots works too but you will need more slots compared to holes and i found holes much quicker to make but i have a drill press.
Once everything is in you don't touch the substrate so you want enuf flow in there so it last for a few years; the only thing you once is to clean the canister filter out once in a while.
unless you add a diffuser on the output you will probably need to add some oxygen as most shrimps like oxygen rich water. -
this one has alot more rocks and it is a bit bigger (180p) but might help gives you some ideas

SKA Pure Red Line Entry Grade
We been working on our own SKA Pure Red Line (PRL) line for the past two years. We started with some Nishiki-Ebi JPRL as well as some of MananaP's Red Leg PRL. These ones are essentially the culls from our higher grade breeders but still have very solid shell / color we remove any that not very solid.
You can use these entry level PRL to improve the colors of your existing Crystal Red Shrimps or start your own line.
What are Pure Red Line shrimps?
Pure Red Line or PRL are essentially purebred Crystal Red Shrimps that have been selectively line bred for many generations and highest quality of CRS you can get. While the traits may vary breeder to breeder, PRL generally have thicker shells / more solid colors than standard CRS. Solid red legs and well defined patterns are also common on higher grade PRLs. They also do not have any golden gene so there should be zero golden bee offsprings. Japanese Pure Red Line or JPRL is a term used describe shrimps from the various Japanese breeders - they are probably the most storied and oldest lines as most of them trace their lines back to the original CRS. They are also the most valuable as show quality JPRLs often fetch thousands of dollars on auctions there.
As they been line breed for many generations, they tend to be more sensitive than more CRS - We would only recommend these if you have some experience with raising normal CRS / CBS. [/size]
Parameters
These are raised in 100% RO/DI water remineralized with Salty Shrimp GH+. I also use ADA Amazonia / Africana as my substrate in my PRL tanks.
PH: 5.8 - 6.4
GH: 3-6
KH: 0-1
TDS: ~140 ppm
Temp: 24 C
Golden Bee / Snow White Shrimps
Golden Bee / Snow White Shrimps are essentially white version of Crystal Red Shrimps and will require the same parameters. We have several generation of these; all have a born and raised within our tanks. Some are offsprings from our Mosura / Flowerhead line breeding projects and have very nice solid white shells

i just remove the end of the tubing from the "Y" float valve and use my siphon starting bulb on it. Get the flow going than turn the ball valve off, plug it back in to the float valve and turn it back on. once in a while it loses its siphon but most of the time it keeps it if you turn it off shut-off / ball valve when you are suppose to.
-
I use a few standard tanks on the top level as my reservoir tanks and run my RO line directly to them when filling them up - the end of the line is equipped with a float valve on the tank. When the water level reaches a certain level it will stop the water from entering the tank and create some back pressure on the RO filter. Most RO filter should have a shutoff valve that close the valve to the RO membrane when there is back pressure.
I run at least 2 reservoir tanks; 1 for pure RODI water for automatic top-ups and one with remineralized RO water for water changes - i run a water line from each reservoir tank to each level of the rack (i use different coloured tubing so I know which one is which)
if there are multiple tanks per level, i use "T" connectors to run individual lines from the main line to each tank. So what you will get is two lines going into the tank; for the RO line i just the standard RO shutoff / ball valve (i.e John Guest). For the water change line i like to use the little micro ball valve used for airline as it allows me to have a finer control over the water flow. both line then gets combined into one using a "Y" or "T" connector and than that one line is connected to the float valve that is attached to the tank.
When it is all done it looks something like this:
Under normal operations (auto top-off) the RO water line is open and the water change line is closed. For water changes i close off the RO line before draining the water and than open up and adjust the flow of the water change line to drip water back in. I usually jsut let it run overnight and the next day I come back and turn off the water change line and turn the RO line back on.

YU Handmade 3D Shrimp Net, 30cm - $17.99
A must for any shrimpkeeper! A normal fish is flimsy and will collapse possibly injuring the shrimp’s legs, antennae, or body. These handmade 3D nets are rigid and stay open; they do not collapse when handling shrimps to prevent injuries. The small size and rigid head also move swiftly through the water to make netting your shrimp easier.
Total length is approx. 30cm (5cm head + 25cm handle)

promote growth. improves color and breeding of tropical fish and shrimp, activate bacteria, and improve water quality.

Breeders 'n' Keepers
Shrimpkeepers' Magazine by Chris Lukhaup
The shrimp aquarium hobby is still quite fresh, and there's a lot of uncharted territory when it comes to keeping and breeding shrimp. In last few years, Chris Lukhaup has traveled the world to find out more about shrimps; exploring their natural natural habitats and visiting breeders and shrimp specialty shops from all around the world, all to learn more about these wonderful creatures. He has found that there are more than one way of keeping and breeding them successfully, and he is fascinated when breeders share their secrets. Their valuable knowledge and experience are collected within the pages of Breeders 'n' Keepers, the Shrimpkeepers' Magazine by Chris Lukhaup. Each volume is full of incredible photographs by Chris Lukhaup and text in both German and English. A must have for all shrimpkeepers!
Breeders 'n' Keepers Vol 1 - Europe Best Breeders
Chris Lukhaup interview some of the Europe's top shrimp breeders and keepers as they share their knowledge and experience. The first in a volume of 4, with over 120 color photos and 130 pages.
Breeders 'n' Keepers Vol 2 - Europe Best Breeders
For the second edition of Breeders' n' Keepers, in addition to highly interesting breeder interviews, Chris Lukhaup has managed to gather more experts from the shrimp scene for various key issues.
Roland Lück gives us an insight into shrimp genetics, Bernard Ehmer, the man for secret recipes and remedies that are important for an energetic and happy shrimp life, gives information about shrimp nutrition. Then there is Jared Green from the United Kingdom on the subject of abnormal development in shadow shrimp and other high-grade shrimp, and Werner Klotz also does the honours.
Of course we also let the breeders have their say beginners especially can learn a great deal from their experiences. There is also a grade guide to the classification and classes of shadow shrimp. So again it is a huge package of very interesting information interspersed with high quality photographs.
Breeders 'n' Keepers Wildshrimp - China Special
Over recent years, there has been a particularly great increase in the popularity of shrimps with aquarists, but initially very little was known about these animals and their husbandry was often problematic. For this reason, Chris Lukhaup and Werner Klotz decided at an early stage to travel to the countries of origin to research the animals and the way they live. Southern China especially is a hotspot for various shrimp species and so this special booklet from the Breeders'n'Keepers series deals with the shrimps and habitats of the vast red empire. A Crustahunter trip with 125 pictures, lots of adventures and discoveries about wild shrimps.

Amano require brackish water to breed but they also live for like 10+ years so they will outlive pretty much all the shrimps in tanks even without breeding.
Crystals and most sulawesi shrimps breed fine in freshwater.
Be careful with ghost shrimps - some of them will hunt down smaller shrimps like the cherry shrimps if you keep them in the same tank.
Really crystals will breed in freshwater that may change things. Disappointed to hear ghosts will predate the Neo's. Generally speaking can Neo's and crystals share and breed in same tank? Would like some variety but no way wife's going to let me get another tank for a bit. She wanted zero. Me (with daughter as trump card heh heh heh) got 10g which led to inheriting a 36 with most accessories. Was planning on setting up 10g as dual species shrimp tank.
well it all depends on your parameters - they can coexist but there is a only a small overlap between their parameters. If you want to do both you would want to aim for the following parameters
ph: 6.8
gH: 3-6
kH: 0-1
temp 24 C
if the ph go any lower than 6.6, I found it really slowed down the growth and reproduction rate of my neo's. If hte temp or pH goes higher than above my crystal start to suffer. Essentially you are keeping the Red Crystal (CRS) at the upper end of their range and the neo's are the lower end of their range.
There are also a few other options for shrimp mates for neo's; I currently keep my neo's with the following shrimps but none are what i would call beginners shrimps
Orange Eye Blue Tigers - pH 7, gH 6 kh 1, temp 22C - require lower temperatures compared to CRS
Green Babaulti - pH 7.5, gH 7, kH 3, Temp 26C - probably the closest to middle of the Neo's range
Sulawesi shrimps - pH 8.5. gH 5, kH 4. Temp 30 C - upper end of the neo's range but Sulawesi are very very sensitive and generally hard to come by.
I use RO water for all my tanks and remineralize as needed to specific parameters. If you are just using tap water, the only one that might work is the Green Babaulti unless you use an active buffer substrate to lower your pH and soften your water.

Usually when a mature female molts, it causes the males to go into a frenzy and they would "dance" around the tank looking for the female. "Breeding Liquid" such as the Benibachi one we carry are designed to simulate the natural effect of a female molting and causes the male to basically go crazy. It is promote regular molting, although we generally don't use it very often as it occur quite regularly and naturally in our tanks.
That being said, dosing it in a fairly high density tank is quite the sight! After seeing their reaction the first time I did it a couple weeks ago, I decided to try to get their reaction on film this time. The tank is our 23 gallon mixed grade PRL (aka cull) tank with at least a couple hundred shrimps.

Remember those are just the bare lights.. You will need to do a bit of work and parts to get then up and running.
You will still need a power supply to power them as well at any wiring and connectors / adapters. You should be able to connect 2-3 of them in a row I believe.
The power supplies usually come with either bare wires or a screw in junction box.
Might be a good idea to get an inline power switch as well.
-
ill be interested in that, i will do a bit of research on this topic. i think this would be great in my sulawesi tank...
They should help with the Sulawesi as they like lots of oxygen in the water but if the power goes out you will also have to worry about the temperature dropping. Luckily I didn't any Sulawesi shrimps yet when the power happened last week but I did lose a few rabbit snails because of the lack of heat.

Söchting OXYDATORs
We are the official Canadian Distributor for Söchting OXYDATORs. These little devices create a steady source of oxygen inside your aquarium and unlike air pumps, they require no electricity and are completely silent. We have been using them for years in all our our shrimp tanks to maintain high oxygen levels and as a backup supply of oxygen in case of emergencies when the power goes out (like it did in the downtown core last week).
What are Söchting OXYDATORs?
Söchting OXYDATORs are devices that generate pure oxygen (O2) through a chemical reaction between OXYDATOR solution (hydrogen peroxide) and the catalyst.
Advantages over traditional air pumps
While both an air pump and the OXYDATORs provide a source of oxygen for your aquarium, the OXYDATORs have several distinct advantages:- Require no electricity – great for emergencies when power is not available
- Completely silent and does not cause surface disturbance (i.e. less evaporation)
- Does not expel carbon dioxide (CO2) – since there is no surface disturbance, it does not affect the co2 levels in the tank
- Amount of oxygen release increases with temperature – generally the higher the water temperature, the lower the oxygen level is. The OXYDATORs is able to counter this as the amount of oxygen released increases with the temperature. An increase of 8 C doubles the amount of oxygen produced.
- No parts to service or replace. The only consumable used by OXYDATOR is the hydrogen peroxide solution. A 1L bottle of 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide cost around $20 and produces around 6L of 6% solution.
Available Model:
We currently carry 3 models of OXYDATORs designed for use with aquariums:

Package contents:
1 catalyst, 30ml solution bottle, 2 x 82.5ml 4.9% OXYDATOR solution, stand
OXYDATOR Solution
Only the OXYDATOR Mini comes with the OXYDATOR solution – For OXYDATOR A and OXYDATOR D, you will need to buy the solution separately. Luckily, we can make our own OXYDATOR solution using 35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide (available at most health / natural food stores) and distilled / RO water.
The recommended concentration for the OXYDATOR solution is 6%. To get a 6% solution, you just need to dilute 1 part 35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide with 6 part distilled / RO water.
For example: 100ml of 35% Hydrogen Peroxide + 600ml distilled water = 700ml of 6% Hydrogen Peroxide.
For a 12% solution use a 1-to-3 ratio of 35% Hydrogen Peroxide to distilled water.
For a 18% solution use a 1-to-2 ratio of 35% Hydrogen Peroxide to distilled water.
I currently get my Hydrogen Peroxide at Community Natural Foods (3 locations in Calgary). It is around $20 for a 1L bottle, which in turn makes 6L of 6% OXYDATOR solution. They don’t keep it on the shelf so you will have to ask for it.
Make sure you use only Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide - the normal Hydrogen Peroxide you can get at most grocery store will not work as they contain additional stabilizer / compounds. As always, feel free to leave a comment below if you have any questions

are people still able to order/view finnex.ca? I go there and it tries to redirect me to amazon or finnex.net.
No they are only available thru Amazon or directly from Finnex now. The sales prices on amazon.ca are actually quite a bit lower on some model than what finnex.ca used to sell them at, even when they (finnex.ca) had them for 20% off. For the last year or so they were undercutting finnex.ca prices by quite a wide margin so it probably wasn't a great position for finnex.ca to be in - it never is when your main competitor is also your main supplier.
I actually inquired about becoming a Finnex dealer and they replied that they are no longer selling to dealers in Canada due to the fact that they are not warranted for for International use (i.e. in Canada) - so i am guessing that their fixtures are not CSA approved and maybe they didn't want to go thru that process of getting it approved? Or maybe they just wanted to sell directly now.

Hi Quill,
The website is still under construction I have to have it completed soon. In the meantime i have post my product list here. If there something you are looking for and don't see it here, feel free to message me!

awesome shot!
-
I have some but not much - i only really have it one tank as that is the only one with a strong enuf light to grow. I probably could culture some by collecting some loose pieces that are all over the place (need to really clean up that tank) and tie them to lava rocks or a moss ball holder. will let you know. btw i didn't see any expiry dates on the benibachi stuff
-
wow that hydra seems have a pretty big footprint! you can always move the sponge filter to the back. I find my PRL and CRS in general don't the breeding tube - they prefer hangout in the moss more. The shrimplets really seems to like being on top of the coral moss (mini pellia)
