  1. Lesson learned..some fish..like people are sensitive to certain things. I can't imagine Mela-Fix to kill an entire population but rather the odd sensitive one.

I can't say melafix or pimafix have or have not worked because I usually use it in conjunction with salt or alternating days with other medications but, I have to agree. Certain fish, even the same species, are more sensitive.

I can't remember if it was pimafix or melafix, but I decided to treat a whole tank. And, I turned up the aerator and made sure to monitor the tank for half an hour, as I have a black ghost knife fish. The BGK was okay but swimming in the air bubbles, however my female German blue ram lost colouration and was looking really, really sick within 3 mins. The male GBR was completely fine, flamboyant colouration, acting like nothing was different. Female got transferred immediately to another tank and regained color in a few minutes.

These 2 GBRs were purchased from the same fish store at the same time. They were, and still are, very close to the same size. I am certain they are actually from the same spawn.

I made a second treatment to the tank after a couple of days and the male GBR, again, was fine. I did not treat the female GBR again with this medication.

I do have to say, before treatment, neither showed symptoms of illness, but I was informed to treat the whole tank.

So yes, there are individual reactions to this medication. For Those of you that say 1% of your fish survived, it would be interesting to note individual responses of death/survival of a species.

  2. First time keeping gourami. I read that males harass each other relentlessly. I think mine may all be male but they've barely showed any interest in each other. In fact, they swim around and enjoy each other's company. They are all 2"+ / 120 gal / medium planted tank / no other tank mates

Can anyone take a good guess at the gender?

Should I be worried about adding another gourami, be it male or female?

What about adding a couple of angelfish?

  3. I dug mine out when it wasn't doing so well (one tiny leaf and tiny bulb) and kept it in a 20 gal for probably 6 months under 2 bulbs in pic. I think they are T5 hydroponics lights. Lily did fine but not huge leaves. It became like a small-sized-tank-lily You can see it in the back in my profile pic.

We moved it into the pond after and it was doing great! Huge leaves and all.

Personally I think the leaf pads were healthier outside under sunlight. Greener and thicker with better (more terrible, less pristine) water.

  4. Is Styrofoam toxic in a 80F planted with fish tank?

If not Styrofoam, what would you recommend that is not heavy and can fill spaces? (bubble wrap?)

I am attempting to make an elevation to put slate on. I want the appearance of height without having to add a whole bunch of substrate underneath to create it.

  5. Hello experts!

I'm really obsessed with the "steppes" in this: http://showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org/2012/show209.html

I want to do something similar to a 120 gal. tank but have never attempted such a feat before.

    • What is your opinion of real rocks vs. Styrofoam+grout?
    • Do plants grow on grout and if I went the unnatural route, would it be safe for fish? Which type of coloring would you add to the grout for a more sandy color that's safe for fish?
    • Is the amount of sandstone* required for halfway (1') up the tank and 5' across too heavy for the tank?

    Another example rock structure below:

    *just realized this is sandstone

  6. Baking dirt sounds like too much work!

Though, hesitant on marketed "organic" dirt (afraid they'll add toxic stuff no appropriate for fish).

I will probably try the dirt from stores and "test the waters" (haha) with goldfish, then gradually move to more delicate species.

Do most of you suggest 1" dirt? I am planning to do sand on top for bottom dwellers (?). - Will eleocharis parvula (dwarf hairgrass) hold with sand on top and how much?

  7. Was watching my planted tank today and 1 of the oto cats was sucking on my angelfish. "Cleaning" I guess.

The angelfish did not mind, the oto would come up, nibble, and dart away, and repeat. Maybe the angelfish had some spines or something pokey that didn't agree with the oto's mouth.

    Has anyone ever seen this?

  8. Hey this is a really great topic!

Keep the pictures coming and locations too, if you don't mind.

Is there a possibility of these things surviving in a home-kept pond? (even though there are fish in there)

  9. Where can you find these things and do you "quarantine"?

I was thinking of posting in the DIY section... but if anyone is reading this, have you ever tried purposely getting mosquitos to lay their larvae in backyard "pools"?

[edit: found all the info in the Livefood from ponds journal]

[update: angelfish is spoiled and picky, will eat but only eats Brine/Mysis shrimp hand fed by tweezer]
