  1. Not sure if this is any help as I haven't had enough mysterious fish death experiences.

The only time I can think of was when some fish died, I couldn't find their bodies, and then I got a 'sulfur' smell coming from my canister filter, and some more fish died (but some lived). Water parameters (pH, nitrate/nitrite) were fine, can't remember if I tested ammonia. I was informed my tank went through a hydrogen sulfide cycle and it was suggested I stir up the sand to release the gases and clean the filter again. Another one was a long time ago I had added polished rocks to the aquarium without boiling. When they were boiled, gross black stuff was dispelled and they've been fine with fish since. If it is not disease, then it might be some foreign substances that can't be detected. Have you tried cleaning your filter with aged/treated water lately?

The discoloration (and clamped fins) is usually from stress, submissiveness, or generally not feeling 'well'. My german blue rams (and angels) lose their vibrant colors due to any of those.

That pic looks like the fish has a sunken stomach, did they? You said no outward symptoms though?

I didn't add any new rocks, driftwood or anything else in over a year in that tank so that shouldn't be the issue. The way I clean my filters is I clean one under tap water (easier to clean) and then will clean the other filter 2 weeks later to leave time for bacteria's to reseed the filter and then I rotate like this. I have 1 fluval 405 and 1 fluval 406 + 2 powerheads.

For the fish discoloration it is possible indeed that it is from stress or submissiveness. I have been having some aggression issues which is why i'm trying to get to 45-50 fish. When these fish were in my 55 gallons it was problem free. Now that they are in the 135 that's when aggression started.

  2. I've had some of the new ones die but it's 90% my old mbunas that are affected, some of these fish are probably close to 10 years old.

Before they die usually not a lot of symptoms, the one I took a picture of I was lucky enough to see him before he died, most of the other ones were fine the day before and I found them dead in the morning. No loss of appetite and the only physical things I could find (in the case of mbunas) is what I took in the picture, that sort of discoloration on their skin.

  3. Hi everyone,

Lately i've been having issues with some of my mbunas dying one after the other, about 1 per month and I can't figure out why. Water parameters are good and fish behave good. Any idea why? I've attached a picture of the last dead one and just before he died.

    Thanks

  4. I also though it was over feeding or under feeding but she carefully looked at how much I was feeding them and I looked at her feeding them and she gives the same amount. The water change schedule is basically I do one the last day i'm home and one the first day i'm home so that's one every 2 weeks but I do 30% change. But yeah weird it's only this tank, in my 55 have has no fish death in the whole 2 years i've had it, my angel fish are doing great they lay eggs every 2 weeks if only they would stop eating them... I have no space to put the eggs as my 25 gallon has 30 red shoulder peacocks now.

Also the water must not be that bad if they are breading...

  5. Hi everyone,

So i'm having some issues... 6 months ago I went from a regular shift schedule to working in the field 2 weeks on 2 weeks off and with that came a fish problem... Every 2 weeks i'm no, usually 4-5 days in my shift my girlfriend tells me a fish died, every shift it's the same story, and when i'm there everything is fine, no fish die and they all seem fine,I even got about 30 babies from my couple of red shoulder peacocks, my babies are in a 25 gallon and are still doing fine, then I leave and again 4-5 days in 1 fish dies, I think it's the 5th one now. Water seems fine, ammonia is at 0, nitrite and nitrates are 0 as well, it's a 135 gallon fish thank and my angels fish and roseline sharks in my 55 gallons are fine and never had any issues. Any ideas? This is getting frustrating and the girlfriend is starting to feel responsible for their death.

So yeah the setup is a 135 gallons with 2 filters, 1xfluval 405 and 1x fluval 406, 2 power heads and a big air pump with 2 bubble curtains.

  6. Hi everyone,

I need your help to get rid of a very annoying outbreak of Cyanobacteria in my planted tank. It's filled with that nasty green stuff in my sand, on my plants and on some glass surfaces. I've tried to vaccuum out everything I could but it just keeps coming back. Do you have any tricks to get rid of it?

  7. So I got a new shaft because the rubber on top was missing (worst part is latter I found it on the floor at home) put everything in and now it works for about 30 secs and actually pump water out and everything then it stops and I can hear the motor ting to spin the impeller, only way to get it started again is take everything apart put it back then it does the same thing again. Any idea? i'm about to throw this filter as far as I can, I just got one of my cichlid that died pretty sure it's related to them not having filter for a full day then switching back to my HOB filter which also stop working about once a day (the fulval was replacing this filter...)

  8. Hi all,

I have having a big problem right now: my fluval 405 filter has stopped working. When it's plugged in it makes a popcorn noise and there is basically no water coming out of the filter. I took apart every single piece of the filter inspected that it's not broken and cleaned everything. There was the impeller cover with a broken clip which I replaced for a brand new one but no help. I can see the impeller is spinning, the gasket looks in good shape (I also tried to lubricate it with vegetable oil) and there is no apparent leak.

    Any idea?

  9. Since I have discovered the world of live plants I don't think I can ever go back to fake plants, but you have a point here, and although it does not show up in the picture I have planted some small plants from my planted tank in the back as a test to see if they will eat them/move them around as cichlid usually do and surprisingly enough so far so good. So yeah I agree with you plants would help add some color and depth and I may go that route if they pass my test :)
